Cynopsis: DIGITAL
5/03/07
Good Morning, it’s Thursday, May 3, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Social content site Digg was hit with a user revolt after deleting a post that linked to a decryption key for HD DVDs. The company was asked to remove a link to an article purporting to offer a way around the encoding protection of the new format. After managers complied with the request, the Digg community flooded the site with hundreds of new posts to replace it and thousands of comments criticizing the move. Digg founder Kevin Rose finally capitulated. “You’ve made it clear,” wrote Rose in his blog. “You’d rather see Digg go down fighting than bow down to a bigger company. We hear you, and effective immediately we won’t delete stories or comments containing the code and will deal with whatever the consequences might be. If we lose, then what the hell, at least we died trying.”
Disney launched a MySpace-like social networking portal aimed at kids under 14. Disney Xtreme Digital XD is designed to be a family-friendly hang out equipped with parental controls to give parents oversight of what their kids are doing online. For instance, the chat feature requires parental approval before kids can go beyond selected canned responses designed to limit sharing of personal information. Kids can make their own home profile pages decorated with Disney content, gather to play games, watch videos, create their own channel and, of course, buy Disney merchandise.
Here’s an exclusive. Buy The Farm, producers of the PBS show Farmers Almanac TV and publishers of FarmersAlmanacTV.com, signed a deal to merge its web site with the 16-year-old FarmersAlmanac.com in June. The newly merged site will be more video-centric, featuring clips from the show and community-oriented tips and advice on sustainable living. FarmersAlmanac.com, the online home for the print journal launched 189 years ago by Almanac Publishing in Lewiston, Maine, gets about 280,000 unique visitors a month, according to ComScore.
CBS News signed a partnership agreement with Brightcove to distribute ad-supported video from CBS News across the Brightcove Syndicated Marketplace of websites. Participating publishers will be able to embed the CBS News player on their webpages, which will be constantly updated with breaking news clips from CBS Evening News, The Early Show and other new programs. CBS News will also now be featured on Brightcove.com.
IFC is producing its first ever web series, Getting Away With Murder. Seth Silver (Gilbert John) is a young, socially awkward contract killer who struggles to break free from his overbearing mother Rhonda, played by Rhonda Silver from Shop From Home Network series Rhonnie’s Kitchen. The series premiers on IFC.com on Mother’s Day, May 13 and will run for 13 weeks, to be updated every Monday.
The NBA launched NBA Headquarters on Second Life. The virtual world, built by The Electric Sheep Co., features four video lounges where fans can watch diagrams of current games and highlights of past playoff games. Avatars can play pick up games with each other, or use their “Linden dollars” to buy virtual NBA gear. A toolbar can also be downloaded to provide real time NBA news. The site will be promoted on various league properties and fans can join from NBA.com .
NBC Universal’s iVillage teamed with USA Network to launch a co-branded microsite to promote The Starter Wife, premiering on USA on May 31. The site will feature exclusive videos, star Q&As and social networking tools. iVillage also posted a recent poll asking women, “If you could start over, which (celebrity) couple would you emulate?” Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban garnered 46% of the votes.
MTV launched RealWorldCasting.com, a site where wannabe Real World housemates can upload video audition tapes of themselves to be considered for the show. On the same day VH1 unveiled IloveNewYork2.com, where potential suitors for Flavor of Love castoff New York can also try out online. Visitors to both sites can vote on who they’d like to see, with select users assuming prominent roles such as VP of casting and casting director.
The History Channel’s History.com launched an interactive microsite to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the settling of Jamestown. The site, produced by Invioni, features video clips, historical commentary, interactive maps and teaching tools for use in the classroom.
FOX O&Os KUTP MY 45 and KSAZ Fox 10 in Phoenix launched My Dating Place, an interactive dating program for local residents. Users can post videos, text and photo profiles of themselves on the local stations’ site and volunteer to tape a segment for a weekly program that premiers June 25 at 9 pm on My 45.
(see ad below)
Vuguru‘s teen-targeted online serial Prom Queen is averaging about 200,000 views a day less than half way through its 80-day run, according to company figures shared with MediaWeek. The show has accumulating 5.2 million views since its April 2 debut. More than half of the views have been on MySpace, which enjoys a12-hour exclusive window for each webisodes, followed by views on Veoh (854,653), YouTube (232,382) and PromQueen.tv.
Google launched a new personalization initiative called iGoogle featuring customization tools designed to make Google an effective home page. The site makes it easy for users to create their own widgets to do things such as display personal photos or collect favorite YouTube videos. The pre-set template includes weather, date & time, news and calendar tools. More than 25,000 “gadgets” have already been created by independent Web developers.
~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~
Gemstar-TV Guide signed an agreement with Verizon to license rights for the company’s interactive program guides and related technology for use on the FiOS TV platform. The two companies will collaborate on a solution to enable FiOS TV customers to remotely schedule DVR recordings using TV Guide listings.
Comcast CEO Brian Roberts said he expects Comcast Interactive Media revenue to reach at least $1 billion in the next 5 to 6 years, with significant growth coming from display, video and Comcast.net search advertising. Addressing a Comcast investor conference in Philadelphia, Roberts also said he expects the unit to begin operating in the black from next year.
Quest is still on the fence about getting into direct video distribution after seeing its quadruple play partnership with DirecTV begin to pay dividends. Quest reported net quarterly profit tripled because of costs cuts and additional broadband internet customers, as revenue stayed virtually flat. The Denver-based telco added 260,000 broadband, video and wireless subscribers during the quarter, resulting in about 100,000 additions in net customers. The company has signed 506,000 video subscribers to date.
Multimedia software provider TVersity developed a solution to convert TV content to Flash video to allow for playback on Sony PS3 and Nintendo Wii gaming platforms. Users can access video podcasts and RSS feeds from YouTube, Yahoo Video, Google Video, etc. and play them back on a networked game machine. The free software is available at TVErsity.com.
Publicis group agency Digitas Inc. launched digital creative production company Prodigious Worldwide with the digital production team of General Motors as its anchor client. The company plans to provide clients with the scale necessary to launch global digital campaigns. Prodigious will operate as part of Digitas and tap thousands of producers in low-cost markets such as the Czech Republic, Hungary and Brazil.
~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC. ~
Nielsen will acquire the remaining stake in BuzzMetrics it does not currently own. Earlier this year Nielsen announced it would merge internet ratings unit Nielsen/Net Ratings with the main company sometime in the second or third quarter. Upon completion of both deals, all three services will be consolidated under the Nielsen banner.
ComScore and Nielsen/NetRatings both agreed to attend a summit organized by the Interactive Advertising Bureau to iron out differences over online measurement practices. Since IAB’s open critique of the companies’ measurement practices, both have agreed to undergo further independent auditing by the Media Ratings Council.
Over 90% of search engine marketing ad spending will go to Google and Yahoo in 2007 compared to 73.8% last year, according to new estimates by eMarketer. Such concentration may make advertising on second-tier search engines a better value for advertisers, as less competition for keywords will mean broader reach for less money.
Former GameTap SVP/GM Stuart Snyder has been tapped to lead a new Turner unit including cable networks, digital businesses and other entertainment properties targeting kids and young adults. As EVP/COO of Turner’s Animation, Young Adults & Kids Media division, he will oversee Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, Boomerang, Cartoonnetwork.com, AdultSwim.com, Toonami Jetstream, SuperDeluxe.com and GameTap. Stuart will be based in Atlanta and report to Turner Entertainment Group president Mark Lazarus.
MobiTV founder Dr. Phillip Alvelda resigned as CEO, but will remain as Chairman of the Board of the company. A search is underway for his successor. Meanwhile co-founder Paul Scanlan was upped from COO to President, responsible for sales, business development, product management, marketing and content. Bruce Gilpin, formerly Chief Strategy Officer and interim CFO, was promoted to COO, with responsibility for CTO, engineering, operations, IT and customer support. Bill Losch joined the company from DreamWorks Animation SKG as Chief Financial Officer.
Digital Ad Agency Carat Fusion named Rob Hollander to the new position of SVP/Content Strategy. Rob will work out of the L.A. office to help clients identify and develop multiplatform content.
~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~
This one is kind of in the strange category, but I mean that with all due respect. Urbaniacs.com is an urban-themed virtual world that encourages users to create their own “Urbaniac” super hero out of a template of different body parts and attributes. (Users can purchase additional body parts and gear at Funky Daddy’s Pimp-out Depot and Lunar’s Body Shop once you earn some “urbos”.) Play games and practice on the proving grounds or click around for hidden random events to earn urbos. Read the weekly Urbanville Chronicles newspaper. Pimp out your crib. Chat with fellow Urbaniacs. It’s all good.
A new website will be featured here everyday for you to check out. Some are TV-centric, some creative, some just plain strange. Email me your suggestions at [email protected] and if I include the site you mention, your name, company and city will be credited. Only one mention per calendar week, to make it fair.
