Cynopsis: Kids!

05/26/11

Good morning. It’s Thursday, May 26, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Litton Entertainment inks a deal with ABC to program the network’s Saturday morning programming block beginning this fall.  Under the agreement Litton will launch ABC Weekend Adventure, a block comprised of all six new half-hour, HD and E/I (Educational/Informative) series targeted to Tweens/Teens 13-16 on Saturday, September 3, 2011 on ABC affiliates nationwide.  The FCC compliant three-hour youth-centric block will feature shows designed to encourage viewers to explore the world and culture, give back to communities and live healthier lives.  Produced by Litton Studios, ABC Weekend Adventure will air Saturday mornings in most markets following Good Morning America on 95% of US ABC Affiliates, including ABC O&O stations.  Additionally, Litton has formed the ABC Weekend Adventure’s E/I Advisory Board (members TBA), which will advice it on program content and FCC compliance.  Prior to this the ABC Saturday morning programming block has featured Disney Channel programming, currently called ABC Kids and previously titled Disney’s One Saturday Morning.  The Saturday morning blocks on the other broadcast networks are also programmed from outside with network, currently Qubo on NBC is programmed by Qubo, CookieJarTV on CBS is programmed by Cookie Jar Entertainment, and The CW’s Toonzai is programmed by 4Kids Entertainment.  The ABC Weekend Adventure effort is the first Saturday morning block to specifically target Tweens/Teens.  The lineup for the new ABC Weekend Adventure Saturday morning block will feature:

  • Jack Hanna’s Wild Countdown – each episode wildlife host/expert Hanna will countdown the top 10 in any number of animal related categories.
  • Ocean Mysteries – hosted by animal/nature conservationist Jeff Corwin from the Georgia Aquarium, the series explores life under water and why our oceans are so important.
  • Born To Explore – adventurer/explorer Richard Wiese host the series during which he uncovers facts about nature and man-made wonders in his unique way.
  • Agents of Change – from Mark Koops, creator/producer of The Biggest Loser, the show reports on the challenges people (teens and others) confront and how they take control of the situation.  The series is designed to inspire teens to take action and get involved.
  • The Delicious Adventures of Claire Thomas – A Tom Lynch Co and Lee Gaither’s Basil Street Media project, the food-centric series is hosted by food enthusiast and chef, as she travels to various communities to get inspiration for her kitchen creations and help teens to make healthy eating choices and lifestyles.
  • Culture Click – a stylized new magazine format hosted by Nzinga Blake (E! Entertainment), the program begins with what is hot on the web and then takes a further look at how relates to our culture now and throughout time.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Disney Channel picks up the original new live-action series Austin & Ally.  Set to being production this summer, the comedy will premiere on the network in late 2011.  The series revolves around polar opposites, Austin, an extrovert and musician/singer played by newcomer Ross Lynch, and Ally, a shy but brilliant songwriter played by Laura Marano, who partner to become a popular musical act.  The series also stars Raini Rodriguez and Calum Worth as their best friends Trish and Dez.  Austin & Ally was created and executive-produced by Kevin Kopelow and Heath Seifert (Good Burger, Kenan & Kel, Sonny With A Chance, Jonas).

MORE KIDS STUFF

Chello Zone‘s preschool channel JimJam ( www.jimjam.tv  ) expands in Asia with its launch on Indonesia’s new pay TV channel Skynindo.  The channel’s programming lineup includes Thomas & Friends, Bob the Builder, Barney, Angelina Ballerina and Fireman Sam.  JimJam is a join venture of Chellomedia’s Chello Zone with Hit Entertainment.

Vancouver-based Atomic Cartoons teams with Teletoon Canada to developed the new series Pirate Express (52×11).  Targeted to K7-11, Pirate Express is a co-production with France’s Ellipsanime.  Pirate Express follows the adventures of Newt, a 12-year-old Atlantean boy and the son of Poseidon, who is leading a motley crew of rowdy pirates on bizarre voyages aboard their pirate ship, Fancy Pants.  Things are complicated by the fact that the ship’s original captain must reluctantly accompany them on their missions.  If the pirates fail on their adventures, they will be sent back to a ship in a bottle forever.

CBeebies will take preschool viewers around the world to see how kids around the world live, which includes this month’s debut of the short-form series Little Human Planet (16×5) in Latin America and the US Hispanic channel, the latter available on Dish Network’s DishLatino package.  Little Human Planet airs in Spanish as part of the channel’s Tiempo de Jugar (Playtime) programming block.  The segments were created during production of the Human Planet series.

Hasbro announces it is creating a Center of Excellence for Hasbro Games in Rhode Island.  The new Center of Excellence for Games will further the toy company’s “re-imagining, re-inventing and re-igniting” of its core brands across multiple platforms in traditional and digital gaming.  The plan will also see Hasbro reorganize its global games business and move its games marketing and games development employees from East Longmeadow, MA to Rhode Island.  The company will relocate about 70 employees, reducing the force of about 75 by years end.  Hasbro factory and certain corporate service employees will not be affected by this move.
