Cynopsis: DIGITAL
05.16.13
Good morning. It’s Thursday, May 16, 2013, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
First ABC, now Turner (and later in this brief: Nielsen and ABC), this is swiftly becoming a big week for the future of mobile television: TBS and TNT plan to offer live, 24/7 streaming beginning this summer. The live streams will be available on each channel’s websites as well as a pair of soon-to-launch mobile apps, Watch TNT and Watch TBS. The live streaming capabilities will, ahem, go live, right around the middle of TNT and TBS’ summer programming, which includes series such as Rizzoli & Isles, Falling Skies, Franklin & Bash, Sullivan & Son, and Deal With It. The live streaming will also encompass TNT’s NBA regular season, All-Star Weekend, and playoff coverage; TBS’ MLB regular season and playoff coverage; and both channels’ March Madness coverage. The Watch TNT and Watch TBS apps will initially be available for iOS devices, with support for additional platforms to come by the end of the year. Turner says more details, including the launch date, will be announced in the coming weeks. And yes, you will need to verify your TV subscription to the channels in order to access the live streams.
As announced during its NewFront presentation last month, Conde Nast Entertainment (CNE) has launched a video channel for Wired magazine, the fourth to be added to the company’s growing digital video network. The Wired channel will feature five original series, three of which debuted alongside the channel. These include The Window, Angry Nerd, and Game/Life, as well as upcoming shows like Codefellas (Wired’s first scripted series, starring John Hodgman), What’s Inside, Mr. Know It All, and ReWired: The Documentary. The Wired channel is available on the magazine’s website as well as its YouTube channel. The channel launch is sponsored by Microsoft Surface, Windows Phone, and Windows 8.
Screampix’s newly launched horror movie paid YouTube channel features more than 200 hours of horror content, including full-length films, trailers, interviews, and original video commentary. On that last thing, Screampix has signed on Ray Cannella, formerly of Syfy and Chiller Channel’s original programming team, as its new Head of Programming. One of his main tasks will be to interact with the community that Screampix hopes to build through this paid channel. “We are creating a vertical video portal to satiate horror fans by taking subscribers deeper into the genre, offering advanced levels of curation, encouraging interaction around the movies, and ultimately creating a very active and lively community,” said Screampix Co-Founder Daniel March on the company’s YouTube plans. The channel is launching in the US and Canada for $2.99/month, with plans to expand to the UK, France, and Brazil later this year.
Cinema content and advertising company NCM Media Networks held its second annual upfront yesterday. NCM’s online and mobile entertainment network, which consists of over 40 entertainment-related websites and 100 mobile apps, all-together reaching more than 50 million monthly uniques, is now expanding into original digital video and the second-screen. NCM will launch FirstLook5, a five-minute online/mobile video version of the company’s FirstLook cinema pre-show.NCM also unveiled FirstLook Sync, a second-screen app that will sync to the FirstLook pre-show. It will be available as a standalone app as well as via NCM’s Movie Night Out app, Regal Entertainment Group’s Regal App, and other NCM-affiliated movie theater circuit apps. NCM also announced partnerships with two prominent social networks for people on the go, Twitter and Foursquare:
- Twitter partnership: NCM is developing a weekly multiplatform video series that highlights the latest trending movie-related topics. Produced by NCM and powered by Twitter data, the series will be available in theaters and on Twitter. NCM says audiences will also get the chance to influence future episodes. Over the next few weeks, NCM and Twitter are taking the concept to market to find a presenting sponsor.
- Foursquare ad partnership: NCM and Foursquare will offer local content and offers relevant to the user’s movie-going experience.
More mobile television news: Belkin has released a new receiver for the Dyle Mobile TV service. When paired with the Dyle TV iOS app, the receiver enables users to access live broadcast television without needing a Wi-Fi connection or data plan. While the mobile app is for free, the receiver is priced at $129.99, available for purchase at Belkin.com and Amazon.com. There’s not much of a setup required, as the receiver plugs into the iPhone or iPad’s 30-pin connector. Dyle Mobile TV is a project of Mobile Content Ventures, a consortium of national and regional broadcast groups and networks. The service is currently available in 37 markets across the US, with channel availability varying by region.
The Yahoo-ABC News Network reports that it delivered more than 221 million video streams in April, a month-over-month increase of 18% (comScore). This number, tops among online news video properties, spans original, live online video as well as on-demand content across the network.
A CYNOPSIS MESSAGE

Hosted by: Cathy Applefeld Olson,

Nielsen is collaborating with ABC to expand Online Campaign Ratings (OCR) to mobile apps. The OCR solution measures the audience of digital ads (in a fashion that is similar to how Nielsen measures TV). This trial run will expand OCR’s reach from computers and tablet browsers to now also include mobile apps, potentially providing a more holistic understanding of how audiences consume video and video ad content across devices. With this deal, ABC will measure audience demos and the reach and frequency of online campaigns across ABC content on the web and in mobile apps. The pilot will run through the summer.
— In other words: At ABC’s Upfront, the network’s President/Sales Geri Wang said: “an increasing amount of our digital video viewing comes from apps on mobile devices.” This quote doesn’t come as much of a surprise considering how this is the second big mobile story from ABC this week, following the announcement of the upcoming Watch ABC TV Everywhere service with live mobile streaming. ABC and Nielsen also announced a partnership earlier this year for ABC to use OCR to provide advertisers with metrics for its ABC Unified (one buy across all screens) initiative.
Unicorn Media is partnering with UK-based streaming video app/player provider Apptelic to offer video monetization solutions to publishers and broadcasters. Per the deal, Unicorn will integrate its Unicorn Once product, which allows publishers to deliver as well as dynamically insert targeted ads into live and on-demand video content, with Apptelic’s video player for Windows platforms across online, mobile, and the Xbox 360. Apptelic is an official Microsoft Vendor, registered Windows Phone developer, and registered Xbox app developer. The company was part of the Microsoft team that developed the Hulu Plus app for the Xbox.
Kantar Group companies Dynamic Logic and Compete are teaming with ad-verification solutions provider DoubleVerify to launch Advance, a solution for marketers to optimize digital media campaigns based on things like brand and sales impact. Advance combines exposure metrics (audience composition, reach, and viewability) with effectiveness measures (brand, behavior, and sales data) into a single reporting and optimization system. A real-time analytics dashboard enables planners to adjust their campaigns in-flight to try and score a larger ROI. Advance also offers a “cost-analysis calculator” for planners to input media costs and compare effective CPM, effective CPP, viewable CPM rates, and cost-per-impact.

We have a wonderful lineup of speakers ready to provide you with the latest data and insights on exactly how people are measuring digital video, and what’s in store for the future as the industry continues to evolve.
Google’s annual developer conference, Google I/O, is currently underway. Among the product updates/announcements: Google said there are now over 900 million Android devices worldwide (which is to really say: only a little more than 6 billion people to go, am I right, Eric Schmidt?). Also, Google’s Chrome browser now reaches more than 750 million active users per month (including yours truly).
Viggle has appointed Christopher Traynor to the position of Chief Technology Officer. As part of his new role, Traynor will be creating Viggle LABS, a second-screen “thought leadership initiative.” Viggle LABS will oversee Viggle’s recently announced AppJam Challenge, a competition to create TV companion apps for the Viggle platform. Viggle says it has also filled “multiple engineering roles” at the company as it continues with its aggressive recruitment plan. “As Viggle approaches the three-million registered user mark, we are scaling our engineering talent to continue our growth,” says Greg Consiglio, President and COO of Viggle.
Social ad service 140 Proof has named Kim Stiefel as its new Director/Business Development. In her new role, Stiefel will oversee 140 Proof’s efforts to expand partnerships with app developers and Tumblr bloggers, as 140 Proof’s ad network continues to grow. She will be based in SF.
EXPO, a platform for brands to distribute consumer product videos, has hired four sales execs to its business development team: Gail Koerner, EXPO’s new VP/Sales, will be responsible for growth across strategic accounts. The other three additions, Lori Blinder Barr, Christian Palmer, and Dana Siegal, are all joining EXPO in the newly created roles of Director/Sales. They will be responsible for new business growth across a variety of verticals, including beauty, food, and consumer electronics.
SpotGenie Partners has named Larry Fox to the newly created role of VP/Director of Creative Services. He will be responsible for overseeing the development of all advertising, marketing, and communication tools, including direct mail, internet, b-to-b, video, and event marketing. He will report to SpotGenie President/CEO Wayne Dykes.
Next week is YouTube Comedy Week, a themed programming event that will feature live shows, new episodes from popular YouTube channels, and content from (on and offline) celebrities including Rainn Wilson, Smosh, Ryan Higa, Vince Vaughn, The Lonely Island dudes, The Fine Bros, The Onion, CollegeHumor, Epic Meal Time, and more. The event officially kicks off this Sunday, May 19, at 9pm ET with The Big Live Comedy Show, a global live stream featuring comedians doing stand-up, sketches, and musical performances. Expect to see some of the funny people mentioned above during the event. Also, if that’s not exciting enough for you, here’s a video starring Arnold Schwarzenegger to get you pumped up. As reported earlier, these themed programming weeks are a newer element of YouTube’s pitch to advertisers.
