Cynopsis: Kids!

05/13/10

Good morning. It’s Thursday, May 13, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Haim Saban re-acquires the Power Rangers from Disney and has already licensed the franchise to Nickelodeon, per The New York Times.  Power Rangers, currently in its 18th season, will be housed under Saban Brands, the newly formed division of Saban Capital Group (SCP) that is bolstered with a $500 million budget to acquire and manage various brands.  Twenty new episodes (season 18) of Power Rangers will debut on Nickelodeon and Nicktoons in 2011, while episodes from previous seasons (there are 700 episodes in the library) will run on Nicktoons beginning later this year.  The original Japanese series was created by Toei Company, which also holds the rights to the property.  Terms of the multi-year deal were not disclosed.  Saban has also renewed its licensing deal with Bandai America for Power Rangers toy lines.

The Walt Disney Company and Korean-based SK Telecom have unveiled their intent to form a joint venture to launch Korean-language Disney branded channels in South Korea.  When the deal is complete these will be the first Disney Channels ever to launch as a joint venture, with SK Telecom being the majority (51%) shareholder, with Disney subsidiary Disney Channel International (DCI) holding the remaining shares (49%).  The proposed deal would include Korean-language versions of Disney Channel and Playhouse Disney Channel aimed at kids/families in South Korea.  The channels will be available in HD multiplex, as well as SD format over cable, direct-to-home and IPTV platforms and related on-demand digital media services in South Korea.  Slated to launch in spring 2011, pending regulatory approval from the Korea Communications Commission, the channels will feature a significant amount of locally produced programming.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

CBeebies is beginning production in the North West area on Veggie Mates (26×15), a new mixed live-action/puppet and music series that focuses on the concept of nurturing, caring and growing.  The series aims to get kids outside and learning about the world around them, including the fun of gardening and caring for living things, the importance of drinking water when it’s hot out, and that everyone is good at different things.  Slated to premiere in early 2011, each episode a team of young kids arrive to help Mr. Bloom care for the plants and produce growing in his garden.  The series features a group of vegetable puppets, the Veggie Mates, who the kids can play with, teach and care for, they include: Colin the Runner Bean – he’s always first with the wrong answer; Margaret the Cabbage – she’s shy but fun and has her heart in the right place; Joan the Fennel – a mothering type; Raymond the Butternut Squash – who is always saying sorry; Sebastian the Aubergine – who enjoys summing up the day’s events with a song; and the Wee MacGregors – a group of mischievous radishes that cause havoc.  Veggie Mates is a CBeebies production made in BBC Manchester.

Not so wimpy!  Fox 2000 is set to release the Diary of a Wimpy Kid movie sequel, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules, on March 25, 2011, per Variety.  Produced by Nina Jacobson and Bradford Simpson, with a script by the writing due Gabe Sachs and Jeff Judah, the new movie is based on the second book in author Jeff Kinney’s book series.  No word just yet on who will direct and which cast members will return.

MORE KIDS STUFF

16 Wishes, a new movie starring Debby Ryan (The Suite Life on Deck), will premiere Friday, June 25 at 8p on Disney Channel.  The movie follows the strange things that happen as Abby (Ryan), who can’t wait to grow up, finally turns 16 and all the 16 wishes from her secret list begin to come true – some turn out great, while others … well … maybe being a kid isn’t so bad after all.  Produced by MarVista Entertainment, 16 Wishes was written by Annie DeYoung (StarStruck, Princess Protection Program) and directed by Peter DeLuise (Stargate SG-1).  MarVista’s Michael D. Jacobs (Special Delivery) and Fernando Szew (Deadly Honeymoon) served as Executive Producers along with co-production partner Ron French (Battlestar Galactica) from Unity Pictures Group.  MarVista’s Robyn Snyder (I Me Wed) serves as Producer.

Nominations for the 37th Annual Daytime Entertainment Emmy Awards were announced yesterday, which of course includes a collection of kid-targeted categories.  Leading the way in kid-related programming nominations is PBS with about 36 nominations, followed by Nickelodeon with 25 nods, Disney Channel with 5 and Cartoon Network receiving 4 nominations. CBS will broadcast the Daytime Entertainment Emmy Awards on Jun 27 at 9p, live from the Las Vegas Hilton in Las Vegas.  The Daytime Entertainment Creative Arts Emmy Awards will be handed out at the Westin Bonaventure in Los Angeles on June 25. Some of the categories and nominees are listed below, happily there are far too many to list here!
