Good morning, it’s Thursday, May 13, 2010, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Time Warner is expanding its “TV Everywhere” initiative, announcing a new deal with Verizon to add TNT and TBS to the line up of channels viewable on the laptops and, soon, mobile phones of FiOS TV customers. Original Turner shows such as The Closer and Southland will be available free of charge within 24 hours after an episode airs on live television. Both TNT and TBS will launch dedicated streaming websites similar to the HBOGo site that will require subscribers to authenticate their identity.
Univision Interactive Media introduced a new soccer-themed site and revamped its existing sports-themed portal. Univision Futbol will act as a stand-alone soccer destination, complementing live streaming of all 64 FIFA World Cup South Africa games with news, videos, photos, blogs and social media fan pages. Univision’s Deportes site has undergone a redesign featuring improved navigation and expanded coverage of baseball and boxing.
Montreal-based telco Bell struck a deal with HBO to add a large selection of HBO programming to its authentication-required Bell TV Online portal. It will be the first way to access current HBO content online in Canada, with Bell providing access to approximately 300 hours per week. The offering will be a part of pay TV service’s TMN OnLine line-up.
Media distribution company Avail-TVN announced plans to deliver a suite of 3DTV programming during Q4 2010 in stereoscopic 3D. The offerings will include a transactional 3D VOD component featuring movies, concerts, events, sports programming; a companion free VOD service offering features, documentaries, music and two linear 3D channels.
Motion picture ad company Mark Woollen & Assoc. launched a new company that is putting together interactive trailers for movies. iTrailers like this one for Sex and the City 2 play a video of the standard trailer embedded with clickable “hot spots” that reveal additional info about the film from the name of a clicked-on dress’ designer to little-known facts about the characters.
KIT Digital and SNTV (Sports Network Television) have announced a deal to offer third-party sites access to video coverage of the World Cup including breaking news, interviews and press conference available on three screens: computer, mobile phone and TV.
ActiveVideo is promoting a new cloud-based application and content delivery system with This Technology, LLC called “iVOD” that is out to improve monetization of and control over advanced VOD advertising. The solution will utilize ActiveVideo’s Cloud TV platform and This’ metadata and advertising supply management software to enable operators and programmers to swap out pre-encoded ads with targeted, timely ads on the fly.
Brightcove announced a new HTML5 video advertising solution with partner FreeWheel that should be ready to delivery video ads to the iPad beginning in early June. Video ads have been slow to develop for the device as a lion’s share of ads have been produced for Flash and many of Brightcove’s media clients have been requesting an HTML5 solution.
Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-Fla.), ranking member of the House Communications Subcommittee, introduced a bill on Tuesday dubbed the “Internet Investment, Innovation, and Competition Preservation Act” that would require the FCC to conduct a extensive market analysis before mandating new broadband regulations. Industry voices including NCTA President and CEO Kyle McSlarrow praised the measure.
A number of production entities have thrown their support behind Viacom in its $1 billion copyright battle against YouTube in the past few days including NBC Universal, Warner Bros., Disney, the Screen Actors Guild, Directors Guild of America and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, per CNET.
VOD and interactive TV vendor SeaChange International unveiled a new T-commerce service to allow MSOs to set up retail transactions using their VOD infrastructure. The “Watch & Buy” app can be used to sell DVDs, movie soundtracks, video games or other items for purchase alongside VOD titles and includes a customizable user interface and a back-end order fulfillment system.
Paul Allen’s Charter Communications struck a deal with iTV developer itaas to license its TVWorks ETV platform to deploy across a variety of installed digital set-tops. Charter will use the Comcast-developed EBIF user agent for Motorola set-tops; the Pathway Communications Suite; and the OCAP Services Library (OSL) components of the interactive platform.
Sorenson Media and ProKarma Interactive announced a new partnership to develop and serve mobile video apps to a variety of mobile platforms supporting devices such as Apple’s iPhone and iPad.
Facebook took the top spot away from Yahoo in terms of delivering banner ads to U.S. users during Q1, according to ComScore data obtained by the WSJ. Facebook served 176.3 billion display ads on its website over the first three months of 2010, representing 16.2% of total ads delivered. Yahoo placed second serving 131.6 billion banner ads while Microsoft served 60.2 billion ads.
Flummoxed by the technical jargon thrown around to describe set-top box data measurement and iTV applications? The Coalition for Innovative Media Measurement (CIMM) introduced its CIMM Set-Top Box (STB) Lexicon, a common set of more than 800 terms for use in analyzing and processing STB measurement. For example, a QAM Tuner is ” a device in some digital televisions or other devices that enables direct reception of any unscrambled digital cable channels with the use of a Set-Top Box. (QAM stands for quadrature amplitude modulation.)
Verizon Wireless and Google are working to develop a connected tablet PC to rival the iPad that would likely run on the Android OS, according to reports in Bloomberg and the WSJ. Verizon has lagged behind competitors in rolling out tablet devices as it completes building out its CDMA-based network. (Rivals such as AT&T run on GSM networks.) Verizon also plans to shift its data plans from unlimited usage to packages of data usage.
Adapting its business model to compete with Google’s free online productivity apps, Microsoft unveiled a new collaboration-themed Office 2010 due out in June with a free, stripped down browser-based “Office Web” component. Microsoft is also bringing the enhanced software suite to mobile phones, releasing a Windows Mobile 6.5 version yesterday and also offering the suite for Nokia devices.
Casual game developer Oberon Media‘s iTV division unveiled a new 3D games catalog for broadband-connected 3D TV platforms.
John Lilly is stepping down as CEO of open source browser foundation Mozilla to join VC firm Greylock Partners as a Venture Partner, per AllThingsD.
NBC Local Media tapped former Daylife product strategist Anil Podduturi as VP/Product Strategy and NBCU Software Engineer Pranav Kamkhalia as VP/Product Development. Both will report to Lora Le Sage, who oversees NBC’s digital products and operations.
Financial journalist John Carney, most recently of Business Insider’s Clustertock, will be joining CNBC.com as Senior Editor. He reports to Allen Wastler, Managing Editor, CNBC.com.
Sundance Channel announced a trio of promotions in the Marketing dept.: Beth Stein was upped to VP/Marketing; JC Cancedda was elevated to VP/Brand Strategy & Creative; and Lele Engler was promoted to Director, Marketing & Media. Beth and JC will report to Shari Weisenberg, SVP of Marketing and Lele will report to Ms. Stein.
Publisher Zmags Corporation has appointed Peter Velikin as VP/Marketing. He is charged with generating demand for Zmags’ digital publishing solutions.
A new website created by a group of writers and staffers laid off from the Baltimore Sun (real ones, not characters featured in Season 5 of The Wire) attempts to put a human face on what happened at newsrooms across the country as papers began to fold or dramatically downsize. Funded with a fellowship from Writers Guild of America, East Foundation, Telling Our Stories documents the painful realizations many journalists have gone through in the past year and some of the experiences that made working at the paper more than just a job for so many. Don’t worry – it’s not a total downer. There are thoughtful essays, cool photos and plenty of gallows humor, delivered by terrific storytellers. And there is a connection here to The Wire. The show’s creator David Simon, a former Sun crime reporter, collaborated with WGAE Foundation members Tom Fontana and Barry Levinson (all friends from their Homicide: Life on the Street days) to establish the fellowship.
