Good morning. It’s Thursday, May 12, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing. 

Sesame Workshop teams with partners from around the world to support the United Nation’s Decade of Action for Road Safety.  Three new Sesame Street public service announcements (PSAs), created with funding from the FIA Foundation, debut this week in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and the Middle East.  The PSAs feature Grover in different scenarios demonstrating various road safety acts, such as buckling up or putting on a helmet.  In addition to the PSAs, Sesame Workshop and the Global Road Safety Partnership are jointly developing a Road Safety Education Framework designed to be a practical guide for Road Safety educators, parents and practitioners who are developing content, educational materials and communication strategies to help kids better understand the risks associated with travel on or near the roads.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

The dance card is now full, as the last tributes Lionsgate‘s The Hunger Games movie are cast.  The tributes from District 2, two of Katniss and Peeta’s most significant opponents, are Alexander Ludwig as Cato and Isabelle Fuhrman as Clove.  Directed by Garry Ross, the move is set for a March 23, 2012 release.  Below is the final list of the casting for all the tributes from all 12 Districts in the story:

The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) has announced the nominees for the 38th Annual Daytime Entertainment Emmy Awards.  In the kid’s arena PBS leads the way with 46 nods, followed by Nickelodeon with 25, The Hub with eight, Disney Channel with five, and Disney XD and Nick Jr. with three each, Cartoon Network with two nominations.  Hosted by Wayne Brady, the Daytime Emmy Awards will be handed out on June 19, 2011 airing on CBS.  Brady is currently the host of Let’s Make a Deal, which airs on CBS.  The Daytime Creative Arts Emmy Awards gala will be held on Friday, June 17, 2011 in LA at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel.  Some of the categories and nominees for the 38the Annual Daytime Entertainment Emmy Awards are listed below, luckily for all of us there are far too many to list here! In addition to the nominees, four winners in Individual Achievement in Animation were announced, selected by a juried panel of peer judges.  Those winners are: “Diamond” Dave Merritt, Background Design for Toot & Puddle, NICK Jr.; Vince Toyama, Background Design for Transformers Prime, The Hub; Christophe Vacher, Color Design for Transformers Prime, The Hub; and Kaz Aizawa, Background Painter for T.U.F.F. Puppy, Nickelodeon.

Warner Bros. Digital Distribution (WBDD) is expanding its movie App Edition lineup with the addition of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1.  App Editions are free-to-download apps of movies and TV shows content for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch.  Movie App Editions include the first five minutes of the film and a selection of bonus content (e.g. games, trivia, soundtracks and soundboards).  Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1: App Edition features more than an hour of exclusive behind-the-scenes videos, 26 compositions from the full original movie soundtrack, the digital soundtrack booklet, production photos, movie scenes, and a collection of movie posters from Year 7 that can be saved as wallpapers and shared.

Nickelodeon‘s new Team Umizoomi DVD is slated to release on June 28, 2011.  The title includes four episodes of the series, which focuses on early math skills, special features, a Math Mission card (for on-the-go math problem solving), and will also feature the voice of singer Jordin Sparks.  Additionally, the DVD includes a free one-year subscription to Parents Magazine.  The DVD is created by Nickelodeon Home Entertainment and distributed by Paramount Home Entertainment.

Big Idea Entertainment will release a new VeggieTales DVD, VeggieTales: Princess and the Pop Star, on August 13 and 16, 2011 in Christian and general retailer stores respectively.  Designed to underline that each viewer is unique, the title will be supported through various marketing and ad campaigns as well as a promotional deal with Chick-fil-A and its kids meal program.  Additionally, Big Idea Entertainment will host live events nationwide at select retailers and churches to coincide with the DVD release.  The music-filled DVD, which also features sing-along songs, interviews, and Princess Poppyseed’s Points for Being Uniquely You.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Discovery CommunicationsAnimal Planet enters into new licensing deals for North America.  The three deals were brokered on behalf of Animal Planet by its North-American licensing agent, the Joester Loria Group.

  • Toy Island, a division of Techno Source, will create Animal Planet branded 3D and traditional puzzles, stickers and sticker books, trading cards and games.  The products are set for release from fall 2011.
  • Animal Feet is developing a collection of kid’s and adult plush slippers featuring animals from around the world.  The first eight pairs of the Animal Planet slippers, which includes orangutan, meerkat, T-Rex, panda, stegosaurus, hammerhead shark, cheetah and white bunny slippers, will debut for fall/holiday 2011.
  • Cosrich Group will produce an eco-friendly kid’s line of Animal Planet bath products, including bath activity sets including bath crayons, stone paper sheets used to color while in water, sponges, fizzing bath rocks, and foam pieces, set to debut for holiday 2011.  Also in the works – Animal Planet bath foam soap, bubble bath, body wash and shampoo.

Disney Channel and Feld Entertainment team to launch a new Phineas and Ferb 80-city US live touring show, Disney’s Phineas and Ferb: The Best Live Tour Ever!, which will launch this August 2011.  Based on the channel’s tween-targeted animated series, Phineas and Ferb: The Best Live Tour Ever is produced by Feld Entertainment.  Information about the tour and tickets can be found at PhineasAndFerbLive.com ( www.phineasandferblive.com ).

Brand-Xpand enters into a licensing deal with creator/producer Ludorum and retail website TysToyBox to launch an online store for Chuggington merchandise ( www.chuggington.tystoybox.com ).  Ludorum’s CGI animated preschool series airs in the US on Disney Channel’s Disney Junior programming block.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Epix names Douglas A. Lee as EVP/Programming Acquisitions, Strategy & Enterprises.  Lee, who will be based in NY, will report to CEO Mark Greenberg.  Lee previously served as EVP/Worldwide Digital Media, MGM. While at MGM, Lee was a key member of MGM’s executive team that helped create the Epix venture along with partners Paramount Pictures and Lionsgate.  Prior to MGM, Lee toiled in executive positions at HBO, Fox, Universal Television, and Children’s Television Workshop.
