Good morning. It’s Thursday, March 8, 2012, and this your first early morning briefing.
Classic Media acquires the rights to the preschool property Noddy from UK-based Chorion. The terms of the deal were not revealed. Author Enid Blyton created Noddy in the book, Noddy Goes To Toyland, first published in 1949. The TV series and London stage show debuted in 1954. The Noddy programming library now includes 250+ episodes, with the newest series, Noddy in Toyland, available in 100+ countries. Classic Media is home to a range of properties including Casper the Friendly Ghost, Where’s Waldo?, Lassie, The Lone Ranger, Mister Magoo among others. No word yet on Blyton’s other kid properties. Chorion has been selling off its assets after being unable to rise from its considerable debt last year. Recently, Lord Waheed Alli, who had been Chorion’s Chairman and CEO, and his Silverage Media acquired the preschool series Octonauts and the Beatrix Potter works, and Sanrio (Hello Kitty) acquired Mr. Men. Most recently, last week US-based Acorn Media Group purchased a controlling interest in Agatha Christie’s estate, which includes her numerous best selling mystery novels, short stories and plays, and TV movies, from Chorion.
Nickelodeon reaches into its time capsule to bring back its popular 1990s game show, Figure It Out, for all new episodes (40×30) featuring unique kid talents and skills. Created by Kevin Kay and Magda Liolis, the new episodes will be executive produced by Liolis and Eileen Braun. Figure It Out made its original premiere on Nickelodeon in July 1997, where it ran for four seasons, and was hosted by Olympic gold medalist swimmer Summer Sanders. Panelists the first time around included Nickelodeon celebrities such as Kenan Thompson, Amanda Bynes, Michelle Trachtenberg and Mike O’Malley, as well as other celebrities including Coolio, Aaron Carter, Sherman Helmsley, Evander Holyfield, Julius Erving, among others.
Fisher-Price, a subsidiary of Mattel, and Nickelodeon ink a multiyear renewal of their global licensing partnership with a new multiyear preschool master toy agreement. Under the deal Fisher-Price will develop toys based on preschool TV series airing on Nickelodeon and Nick Jr. networks. Key product categories include infant and preschool toys, plush, figures, preschool vehicles, and play sets are covered under the agreement. Upcoming toys resulting from the deal for 2012 include a new line developed for the preschool math series, Team Umizoomi, which is set to be available this fall. There will also be new Dora the Explorer product for this year, including a dollhouse (featuring 30 sound effects and Spanish and English phrases), dolls, play sets, and a Fantastic Gymnastics Dora doll that will release to coincide with the 2012 Summer Olympics.
