03/06/08

Good Morning.  It’s Thursday, March 6, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing.

So, you say your a 24 fan?  Then this one’s for you!  You won’t have to wait until January 2009 for your next Jack Bauer fix – rather a 2 hour prequel is being developed to air in the fall, reports THR.  The prequel will bridge the previous season with the new upcoming season.  24 is produced by Imagine TV and 20th Century Fox TV.

Tonight’s Premiere:
A&E: Crime 360 at 10p

IME digital strategies program for media and ent execs. April 16-18 NYC. See below.

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

CBS will premiere its two new dramas this summer: Swingtown on May 29 at 10p and Flashpoint will debut in July with a specific date announced later.

In the new VH1 series I Know My Kid’s A Star, Danny Bonaduce and Hollywood casting director and manager Marki Costello will find the next big child star. I Know My Kid’s A Star will premiere March 20 at 9p with a sneak peak of the first episode available via VH1.com on March 13. The eight, one-hour episodes will feature ten parent/child teams who will live together in a Los Angeles house, willing to do whatever it takes for the child to become famous. The series is executive produced by Danny and Gretchen Bonaduce and produced by 3 Ball Productions.

VH1 also opens a new season of Celebrity Fit Club: Boot Camp on March 13 at 9p with several former Fit Club veterans returning to lose the last 10-20 pounds along with new recruits. Celebrities coming back include Tina Yothers, Toccara, Willie Aames and Dustin Diamond. The new recruits include Erin Moran, Sommore, Brian Dunkleman and A.J. Benza. Celebrity Fit Club is a production of Granada America.

Monday night’s season opener of Little People, Big World on TLC (8p) drew in 2.7 million total viewers and 1.3 million A25-54 viewers. In addition, the second new episode at 830p delivered even higher numbers as 3.5 million total viewers and 1.8 million A25-54 viewers tuned in.

FX’s second season debut of Dirt starring Courteney Cox on Sunday (10p) averaged 1.7 million total viewers which is 54% less than the 3.7 million viewers who watched the series opener in January 2007. Production of the show was affected by the writer’s strike, as FX did not extend its order beyond the seven already completed episodes.

The final episode of The Millionaire Matchmaker on Bravo (10p) had 679,000 A18-49 viewers along with 938,000 total viewers. Afterward, the premiere of The Real Housewives of New York City (11p) attracted 659,000 A18-49 viewers and 824,000 total viewers.

Two Corrections:
   NBC
‘s The Baby Borrowers will premiere on June 25 and not in July.
The CW series How to Teach Filthy Rich Girls has been ordered as a pilot not a series.

IFC Entertainment, a subsidiary of Rainbow Media Holdings LLC made a two-year pact with Blockbuster Inc., giving Blockbuster the exclusive U.S. rental rights for IFC movie titles through its stores, by mail subscription services and its digital downloading service, Movielink.com. Designed to make independent films available to a wider audience, the agreement will allow IFC and Blockbuster to share rental proceeds from IFC titles. Blockbuster will have an exclusive 60-day rental window that includes both the physical and digital rental distribution avenues. After that, the IFC titles will be available on a non-exclusive basis for retail and digital distribution, however, Blockbuster will continue to have exclusive physical rental distribution rights for IFC titles for three years after the initial release date.

NBC Universal’s Local Media unit purchased the marketing and promotional assets of Skycastle Entertainment. The new division will function as a stand-alone business within Local Media to develop and produce 360-degree marketing and promotional solutions for advertisers.

Crown Media Holdings, Inc., owner and operator of Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movie Channel, renewed its distribution agreement for Hallmark Channel with DIRECTV, Inc. over a multi-year term. Currently, Hallmark Channel reaches almost 15 million homes through DIRECTV. The agreement also allows DIRECTV the right to distribute the standard definition and hi-def versions of Hallmark Movie Channel.

UPFRONT UPDATES: National Geographic Channel

Instead of having a larger upfront event, NGC will host a series of smaller client meetings. The network will also host their annual Family Events for the network’s ad sales clients next month in New York and Chicago. NGC has four new series on their slate for 2008-2009:

  • Locked In: Filmed inside Georgia’s Hays State Prison for one year, NGC takes a look at some of America’s worst criminals and what their lives are like on the inside.
  • Master of Disaster: Tim Samaras, a disaster consultant for the FBI and Homeland Security, examines natural and man-made catastrophes to test modern constructions and technology in crisis.
  • Who Knew? with Marshall Brain: Curious engineer and information junkie, Marshall Brain, takes a look at how a variety of items are designed and how they work. Three episodes will premiere this March with ten more airing this summer.
  • The Big Fix: Host Sean Riley leads large repair plans for some of the world’s biggest problems, such as how to stop Venice from sinking and how to give Mount Rushmore a facelift.

NGC will also air two miniseries, Secret Service Files and On Board Air Force One. The network will also return seven series: Dangerous Encounters with Brady Barr, Dog Whisperer, Explorer, Locked Up Abroad, Man-Made, Naked Science and Taboo.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

TLC and Real Simple are teaming to develop multi-media lifestyle content for various platforms including television, print, radio, online and in-store events. Set to launch this August, TLC ordered 15 episodes of a primetime TV series based on the Real Simple brand and at the same time Real Simple will begin interactive digital content personalized for the consumer in addition to content in the magazine.

Casting Call: Nashville Star, debuting this summer on NBC is hosting the final national open casting auditions in four cities starting this weekend in Los Angeles. Other auditions will happen this month in Washington, D.C., Austin and Nashville. These auditions will be filmed to air as the “Casting Special” for the premiere episode. The deadline to submit videos is March 10 and entries must be postmarked by this date. For information visit, www.nashvillestar.com .

CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORYThe Better Business Bureaus’ Children’s Advertising Review Unit (CARU) has forged new referral agreement with the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) with the goal of ensuring that film distributors follow MPAA ad guidelines.  Under the agreement, the MPAA will participate in reviewing complaints, received by CARU, concerning placement of ads for PG-13 rated movies during TV programming targeted to specifically to kids under 12 that it cannot resolve.  Once referred by CARU for review, the MPAA Advertising Administration will to determine whether the film is appropriate for advertising to kids.  This is a role that CARU previously took on and then referred on to the Federal Trade Commission.  The issue centers primarily around movies that are rated PG-13.  According to MPAA Advertising guidelines, PG-13 films with certain content may only be advertised to particular audiences, and the Advertising Administration works with film companies in targeting ads appropriately.   Full edition: CYN KIDS.
