Cynopsis: Kids!
03/03/11
Good morning. It’s Thursday, March 3, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
Hasbro Studios, the production/distribution arm of Hasbro, looks to increase its output and in doing so has restructured its creative teams into separate development and current programming groups. Under the new set up, Mike Vogel is upped from Executive Director to VP/Development, Boys, Action, Girls and Preschool Programming, and Linda Steiner moves up to SVP/Current Programming from VP. Vogel is credited with guiding development and production on Hasbro Studios’ animated series Transformers Prime and G.I. Joe Renegades, which both air on The Hub. He previously served as Director/Animated Programming, Sony Pictures Animation. Steiner joined Hasbro Studios from Warner Bros. Animation, where she was SVP/Creative Affairs, and where she oversaw development and production on a range of animated series, including The Batman. Additionally, the restructure will see VP/Production Kathy Page lead an expanded team to support the restructured departments with production and post-production services, while continuing to help oversee outside production relationships.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Toy Story’s Tom Hanks (Woody) and Tim Allen (Buzz Lightyear) are set to be together again in Disney’s Jungle Cruise, a new live-action movie version based on the Disney theme park Jungle Cruise ride, per Heat Vision. Allen will play the captain on the boat and Hanks will play a family man. Produced by Mandeville’s David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman (producers of The Fighter), the Jungle Cruise action/adventure movie is being written by Roger S. H. Schulman (writer/Shrek, and writer/producer on a range of Disney Channel and other TV series).
MORE KIDS STUFF
Scholastic is set to launch a new teachers guide for its kid/tween multi-platform series The 39 Clues, as well as a live webcast to support teachers in helping their students become better writers. Ruth Culham, creator of the Traits of Writing assessment and instructional framework and author of a new core writing program Scholastic, Traits Complete (grades K-8), is partnering with authors of The 39 Clues book series and Scholastic editors to create the guide and model, mentor and inspire good writing for students. The guide will be released to teachers ahead of the live webcast (targeting teachers of grades 3-6), called Decoding Writing with The 39 Clues ( www.scholastic.com/decodingwriting/ ), on April 5 at 1p and will feature four of the authors of The 39 Clues series and offer content and ways to help students develop their writing skills using Culham’s six traits that inform kids about what makes good writing: ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency and conventions. The 39 Clues authors that will be interviewed live during the webcast include Peter Lerangis, Gordon Korman, Jude Watson, and Linda Sue Park, as well as a video featuring author Rick Riordan. The webcast coincides with the release of Book 11: Vespers Rising, by authors Riordan, Lerangis, Korman, and Watson. This fall Scholastic will release The 39 Clues: Cahills vs. Vespers.
Disney will release Marvel Entertainment’s new The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes! Volumes 1 & Volume 2 ($19.99 each) on DVD this April 26, 2011. Together the two DVDs features 13 episodes: Volume 1 includes episodes 1-7, along with an exclusive look at the characters and storyline of season 2; and Volume 2 includes episodes 8-13, and more exclusive sneak peeks at season 2 of the series. The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes! features the voiceover talents of Rick D. Wasserman (Planet Hulk, Marvel Vs. Capcom 3, House M.D.) as Thor, Brian Bloom (The A Team, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2) as Captain America, Fred Tatasciore (Tron: Evolution, Hulk Vs., Wolverine and the X-Men) as The Hulk, Wally Wingert (The Family Guy, The Tonight Show) as Ant Man, and Phil Lamarr (Mad TV, Futurama) as Jarvis.
Vancouver-based Slap Happy Cartoons partners with Canucks Sports & Entertainment to create in-arena promotion and messaging that features pro ice hockey’s Vancouver Canucks mascot, Fin. Slap Happy Cartoons has given the Fin a refreshed look and produced a series of animated shorts featuring the mascot on the big video screens during home games at Rogers Arena. In the shorts Fin interacts with fans at the game. Founded by animation veterans Kathy Rocchio, Greg Sullivan, Josh Mepham and Vito Viscomi, Slap Happy Cartoons has offices in Vancouver and LA.
MARKETING/LICENSING
HIT Entertainment teams with Fruit of the Loom to introduce a new line of Angelina Ballerina underwear at US retailers this spring 2011. Designs featured on the new Fruit of the Loom product line for girls (sizes 4-8) are based on the new CG animated look on the Angelina Ballerina The Next Steps TV series, which airs on PBS Kids.
EXECUTIVE MOVES
Rocket Licensing promotes to Claire Coopland to Licensing Executive. In her newly expanded role, Coopland takes on new responsibilities in categories including Food and Beverage, Housewares and Homewares, working with senior executives to develop licensing sales strategies for a range of brands. Coopland, who joined Rocket last year from Chapman Entertainment, will report to Joint Managing Directors Charlie Donaldson and Rob Wijeratna.
