Good morning. It’s Thursday, March 31, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.  And a quick heads up — later on this morning, around 9am, you’ll receive our MIPTV Shopping Guide 2011 with a listing of many of the offerings at next week’s market in Cannes, France, so keep an eye out for that.

Beginning today, Channel One News and See Jane, the programming arm of The Geena Davis Institute On Gender In Media, will introduce the educational video Guess Who: The Mathematician and the Baker to kid/tween audiences on the Channel One website (  ), as well as to teachers via Channel One Connection, a commercial-free educational programming offering available to member schools.  Targeted to K6-9, Guess Who: The Mathematician and the Baker aims to break down traditional gender stereotypes frequently portrayed in the media.  The video presents the narrated story of a Harvard mathematician and bakery owner and challenges a group of kids to identify who’s who, the twist is slowly revealed that the two professionals are one in the same person.  Channel One News is an Alloy Media + Marketing company.


Disney reveals at CinemaCon that Pixar‘s new Monsters, Inc. (2001) movie will be a prequel and will be titled Monsters University, per Coming Soon.  Monsters University will feature characters from Monsters, Inc., including John Goodman and Billy Crystal reprising their voiceover roles as Sulley and Mike.  Produced by Pixar and distributed by Disney, Monsters University is slated for a November 2, 2012 release.


Zodiak Kids and Spin Master announce presales for the new animated series Redakai: Conquer the Kairu (52×26).  Co-produced by Marathon Media and Spin Master, following Cartoon Network US series pick-up, YTV (Canada) and Canal J (France) acquiring the series for broadcast in the second half of 2011, and Gulli (France) also taking the series for air in 2012.  The kid industry got its first look at the Redakai: Conquer the Kairu visuals in February at Toy Fair and Kidscreen Summit.  Zodiak Kids handles the international TV and video sales for the series, which it will showcase at MIPTV.  Marathon Media is handling the worldwide licensing and merchandising rights, excluding North America, where Cartoon Network Enterprises serves as the exclusive agent.

France Televisions and Hi-Fi Canada commission Off The Fence Productions (TF Productions) to produce a third season of Monkey Thieves, the family-targeted wildlife series that follows the mischievous Galta Gang (60+ strong) of Rhesus Macaques in northwestern India.  The new season, comprised of 13×30, will be produced out of OTF’s Bristol office.

Rainmaker Entertainment, a Canadian-based CG animation studio, launches a new channel on YouTube ( ) today.  The channel debuts with an original kid/family aimed, non-verbal animated short titled Zapped!, which stars the company mascots Ting and Juma.  Based on a concept by Mike West, Zapped! Was directed by Zeke Norton and produced by Winder.  Rainmaker Entertainment has produced several shorts featuring Ting and Juma, including Stumped (1×50 seconds) that was featured at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

The new Dora the Explorer DVD title, Dora the Explorer: It’s Haircut Day!, is set for release on May 3, 2011.  Created by Nickelodeon Home Entertainment, the DVD is comprised of four Dora episodes and distributed by Paramount Home Entertainment.

Big Idea Entertainment will release its new DVD title, VeggieTales Live! Sing Yourself Silly, on June 4 and June 7, 2011, at Christian and general retailers respectively.  The VeggieTales Live! Sing Yourself Silly title features 18 songs performed on the VeggieTales live show as well as bonus features, which includes a behind the scenes look on Larry’s Backstage Pass, VeggieTales Trivia game, discussion guide, and four Silly Song Sing-Alongs.

Disney Interactive Studios announces that Disney/Pixar will release Cars 2: The Video Game ( or this June 21, 2011, featuring full 3D support exclusively for PlayStation 3.  The game, Disney Interactive Studios first 3D game for PS3, will be available three days before the Cars 2 movie releases in theatres on June 24.  Cars 2: The Video Game will also be available on the same day and date for other gaming consoles, including Xbox 360, Wii, PC, and Nintendo DS.  The PS3 version of the game detects a connection to a 3D TV and automatically adjusts settings. Cars 2 fans will then experience 3D in all areas of gameplay, including combat racing and all menu interfaces. In addition, the multiplayer functionality of the game will allow for four players to compete against each other in full 3D, utilizing a 4-way split screen.

HIT Entertainment completes three new publishing deals for Barney, Thomas & Friends, and Angelina Ballerina, in Latin America.  From this spring 2011, kids/families will be able to purchase books, in a range of formats, and magazines based on these properties:

  • Editora Fundamento will publish picture storybooks for Thomas & Friends in Portuguese, available at mass retailers across Brazil.
  • Editora Vale das Letras in Brazil will be the new publisher of Thomas & Friends coloring and activity, puzzle, bath, and book plus CD ROM formats in Portuguese. The books will debut at mass and specialty retailers in June 2011.
  • Editorial Vertice will launch Angelina Ballerina story, coloring and activity books for Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela.  This marks the first Angelina Ballerina publishing program in Latin America.  The publisher will also release coloring and activity books for Barney and Thomas & Friends, and the Thomas & Friends magazine in Argentina, Chile, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay.  Additionally, Barney coloring and activity books will be published in Mexico.

The Juno Company, a kid’s digital new media company that creates music education products, movies, TV shows, apps, toys and books, names Technicolor as its manufacturer and distributor.  The deal will see Technicolor provide the replication and manufacturing of The Juno Company’s DVDs from both the Juno Baby and Juno Jr. lines, as well as managing distribution and fulfillment of all Juno products.
