Today’s Top Headlines
We’ve got kids news covered for you daily during Upfront season…

Marblemedia is collaborating on a new animated preschool television series about an Aboriginal boy who sets off on adventures around his snow-covered mountain home. Snow Joe is a co-production with Big Soul Productions, a producer of Aboriginal programming, the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network (APTN), and Alexander Bar, creator of the shows Lunar Jim and Mike the Knight.
     Marblemedia’s interactive division will also extend the Snow Joe brand online and through mobile apps, and Marblemedia’s partner company Distribution360 will handle all international television, interactive and format sales for the series.

Growing its global presence, The Jim Henson Co. has finalized multiple international sales agreements for its Dinosaur Train and Sid The Science Kid series and Sid The Science Kid movie in Canada, France, Portugal and Greece. Ontario’s French-language public TV station TFO acquired rights to the second season of Dinosaur Train, as did British Columbia’s Knowledge network and French public broadcaster France Televisions, which also picked up broadcast rights for the Sid movie. France’s Canal+’s children’s satellite channel in France, Piwi, also licensed season two of Dinosaur Train. Portugal’s children’s cable channel Canal Panda licensed seasons one and two of both Dinosaur Train and the Sid series, and state-owned broadcaster ERT in Greece picked up season one of both series.
 
Countdown to Cannes: The man behind Spider-Man and the Hulk will be weaving a new movie trilogy. Stan Lee’s Mighty 7, a joint venture between Stan Lee’s POW Entertainment, A Squared Entertainment and Archie Comics, will be offered as a movie trilogy – 75 minutes each – at MIP-TV next month by kids programming distributor PGS Entertainment. The films feature Lee himself and a crew of aliens who crash to earth and become the latest band of superheroes. The film’s cast will be announced later this year, and the first of the three movies will be delivered in fourth-quarter 2013… Tricon Films & Television and Mercury Filmworks will be presenting new series Go Away Unicorn! (52 x 11′), aimed at kids 4-7 and based on the popular children’s book written by author and illustrator Emily Mullock… Zodiak Kids is headed to Cannes with new live-action show Officially Amazing, featuring Guinness World Records winners and hopefuls. The series, produced by Lion Television, has already secured a spot on ABC Australia, where it will launch later this year. Lion is the creator of kids series Horrible Histories, a CBBC hit in the U.K. … Canada’s Nelvana Enterprises will present the series Zack & Deuce, based on the hot Scholastic book “The Day My Butt Went Psycho,” plus the second season of Mike the Knight.

Programming Picks

Syfy Kids, KidsCo and Syfy network’s programming block for kids 6-10, will launch in Central and Eastern Europe in June 2013.

The latest installment of Nick News with Linda Ellerbee explores how far the U.S. has come, and perhaps needs to go, on gender equality. Are We There Yet? Women’s History, Past, Present and Future features girls and boys sharing their thoughts with activist Gloria Steinem and host Ellerbee and premieres on Nickelodeon April 1.

Digital Update

There’s no puzzling over the success of Magmic’s Rubik’s Cube app, which reached its to-date high of the 16th top-selling paid App Store app on Tuesday. The surge in popularity could have to do with the fact that the app is featured in a new iPhone television ad, which showcases the interactive touch play and puzzle experience.

Licensing News

Buffets Inc. has come on board to underwrite Scholastic Media’s Clifford The Big Red Dog television show on PBS Kids. All Buffets Inc. restaurants will be supporting the brand throughout 2013 with activities, placemats, stickers and coloring books. In addition, the 50th anniversary of Clifford has attracted a bevy of partners including Hybrid Apparel, JCorp Inc., American Homes & Textiles, Color-A-Cookie and Hansen, Bendon, Douglas, Patch Products, Young Scientists Clubs, A&A Global, Foland Group and Andrews Blaine.

AT New Media and Virtual World Licensing are stepping up their game. The two consultancy groups are teaming to woo digital gaming companies and virtual brands that want to bring their brands into the physical world of toy licensing. AT and Virtual World will focus first on consulting digital brands about the toy licensing market, them pursue potential licensees and licensing partnerships.

Glee is one of four Fox shows getting a brand-specific e-shop this week as part of a new digital commerce initiative from Twentieth Century Fox Consumer Products. The Glee shop features on-demand products plus licensed and as-seen-on-TV merchandise authentic to the show. The other initial digital shops are for New Girl, American Dad and Family Guy. All are engineered by MashOn Inc. and BLKBX Creative Group.

The Big Screen

Moviegoers taking in DreamWorks Animation’s The Croods are also getting a preview for the studio’s next flick Turbo, set to hit the big screen in July. The David Soren-directed story follows a snail with NASCAR dreams. There’s a lot, ahem, riding on the movie and the trailer. It spawned the first original coproduction between DreamWorks and Netflix, Turbo F.A.S.T.

More Kids News

Sophie Turner Laing, founder of children’s programming distributor HIT Entertainment and currently managing director of content for BSkyB, is among the recipients of the first-ever MIPTV Medaille d’Honneur awards, recognizing outstanding contributions to the international television business. MIPTV is bestowing the honor on only six executives this year to mark its 50th anniversary.

CBS Corp. closed a deal to acquire a 50% stake in TV Guide Network from One Equity and plans to convert the guide channel into a new entertainment-focused basic cable network it would operate as a joint venture with Lionsgate.

CynKids Says…

We’re so tickled with Disney Pixar’s March Madness-themed Monsters University clip that we’re declaring the studio an early winner of this year’s NCAA tournament. The video, which has its own Tumblr site and seeped virally into the social media circuit with some promotional muscle from sister company ESPN, features a motley crew of Monsters University students gathered round the tube as they watch their team get eliminated from the tournament. Naturally, chaos ensues, with one disgruntled fan eating the television set. Kudos to Pixar, which again scores top points in its pop culture marketing prowess. CynKids is duly impressed.

Executive Moves

Indie programming producer and distributor MarVista Entertainment is bringing in several executives to help steward its rapid expansion. New hires include former HBO Films development exec Hannah Pillemer as creative executive charged with all creative aspects including script development, treatments and network pitches, and assessment of potential production partners. Also new to MarVista are VP/controller Winny Poon, who joins from Warner Bros. Entertainment, and Tony Vassiliadis, director of strategic programs, most recently at Deloitte Consulting.

Rubicon Group Holding nabbed gaming industry maven Jeff Nuzzi as its new director of digital media. Among other projects, Nuzzi will adapt the Monster In My Pocket brand for digital platforms.

Jeff Olde, VH1 EVP, original programming, is exiting the network after seven years to become EVP, program, development at NBCUniversal’s E!
