03/27/08

Good Morning.  It’s Thursday, March 27, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing. And if you prefer to watch this morning’s news instead of reading it, click here.

FX made a preemptive offer for 15 theatrical titles from Universal, many of which have not yet been released. Titles include The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, Wanted, Hellboy II: The Golden Army and Leatherheads. The license fee for the four year package will end up at a minimum of $115 million, based on the total domestic box office receipts. Universal retains the rights to carve out a separate broadcast license deal as well as another cable license deal.  Additionally, Universal granted FX free VOD rights to the movies for a set period during the four-year term.  Other titles not yet released in the FX package include Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Deathrace, Baby Mama, The Express, Changeling and The Strangers.  Titles already in theatres include Jarhead, Definitely Maybe, Doomsday (Rogue Pictures), Eastern Promises and In Bruges (Focus Features).

Tonight’s Finale:
NBC: Celebrity Apprentice at 9p

~ MORE STUFF ~

FremantleMedia Enterprises made a deal with The Travel Channel to become the exclusive international distributor of the network’s original programming which includes more than 200 hours of programming from the US Travel Channel. The deal additionally includes a first-look at new productions for potential co-financing for international distribution. Some of the titles in the package are Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations, Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern and Samantha Brown Passport to China among others.

HBO picked up the Australian comedy series Summer Heights High, an eight-episode mocumentary which will join the late-night Friday comedy block this June. Created, written and performed by comedian Chris Lilley, Summer Heights High depicts high school through three characters all played by Lilley: a flighty drama teacher, a snooty female exchange student and a break-dance loving delinquent. The twist of this series is that it was shot on location at a real high school with actual students and faculty interacting with Lilley’s characters. Also joining the HBO’s late-night Friday block will be the new animated comedy The Life and Times of Tim, produced by MRC, about an ordinary guy whose instincts keep him on the wrong path.

MTV‘s season three premiere of The Hills delivered the series highest rating ever with a 5.0 among P12034 rating, and a total viewership of more than 4.7 million, also a series all time high. This broadcast out-shined last season’s premiere by 37% in the 12-34 demo.

Golf Channel hits the road with its new original series Highway 18 set to premiere July 22. Two-person golf teams will compete against each other on various courses throughout Florida while encountering challenges both on and off the course. Production by Oklahoma-based Winnercomm will begin early next month.

Discovery Channel begins the first of six new episodes of Man vs. Wild on May 2 at 9p. Adventurer Bear Grylls is back for the second season taking on the Siberian Tundra, flash floods in Southern Africa to an earthquake prone region of Indonesia. The series is produced by Diverse Productions.

Actor Richard Widmark, 93, died after a long illness in his Roxbury, Connecticut home. Widmark made his film debut as the laughing killer in Kiss of Death, and later went on to numerous extraordinary roles in films such as Judgement at Nuremberg, How the West was Won, Murder on the Orient Express and in 1991, True Colors.

CBS College Sports Network is now available to Sky Angel U.S., LLC subscribers through Internet Protocol Television.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Comedy Central ordered two new series that had appeared on its recently announced development slate:

  • David Alan Grier’s Chocolate News (wt) – scheduled to premiere first quarter 2009; this fake magazine show investigates urban pop culture issues.
  • Reality Bites (wt) – will debut this summer; comedians spoof the reality show genre.

ABC socked away two more pilots. The first is an untitled comedy from Dave Hemingson produced by 20th Century Fox TV about a young law school graduate with a middle-class background who goes to work for a boutique firm in Los Angeles. The other pilot is Prince of Motor City produced by ABC Studios from Jessica Goldberg and Hamish Linklater. Prince is a take-off of Shakespeare’s Hamlet set in Detroit’s auto industry.

Casting Notes:

  • Amy Madigan will have a recurring role on ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy playing a psychiatrist at the hospital. Amy will be seen in the five original post-strike episodes with the first debuting April 24.
  • Fox‘s sci-fi drama project Dollhouse from Joss Whedon and 20th has cast four roles – Echo will be played by Eliza Dushku; Tahmoh Penikett as the FBI agent; Dichen Lachman and Enver Gjokaj have both been cast as dolls; and Fran Kranz as the brilliant scientist and computer programmer who imprints the dolls with specific memories.
