Google is calling on the U.S. government to follow suit and begin cracking down on governments that censor content on the internet. Alan Davidson, Director of U.S. Public Policy for Google, addressed a joint Congressional Executive Commission on China reiterating that self-censorship is a non-negotiable legal requirement for the Chinese and that such censorship should be viewed not only as a human rights issue but one that is also affecting the bottom line of foreign companies. “Barriers to the free flow of information online have significant and serious implications,” said Davidson. “They impose often one-sided restrictions on the services of U.S. and global internet companies, while also impeding other businesses who depend on the internet to reach their customers.”
While the world still awaits a mobile version of Hulu, Fox Mobile Group unveiled a new mobile entertainment app dubbed Bitbop to provide on demand access to streaming TV shows and movies via Wi-Fi or 3G networks. The subscription service, priced at $9.99/mo., promises numerous (although as yet unspecified) “top-notch content partners.”
Univision will kick off extensive cross-platform coverage of the FIFA World Cup in South Africa beginning June 11, covering all 64 matches in HD. The network is leveraging Univision, TeleFutura, Galavisión, Univision.com, Univision Móvil and, for the first time, Univision On Demand. All games will be available On Demand the morning after the air live, in HD where available.
NHL Digital has introduced NHL Vault, a new digital archive featuring condensed games from the current season and 150 classic games dating back to the 1960’s when hockey players rarely wore helmets. (Ouch.) The service is offered as a free add-on to NHL GameCenter Live subscribers or as a standalone add-on for $4.95/mo.
Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment announced a partnership with Amazon’s DVD-to-order firm CreateSpace to offer 27 never-before-released MGM films, made-for-TV movies and TV shows.
Beautiful Stranger.tv is a fashioned themed site launched by fashion editor Melissa Fedor and former Showtime producer Abby Wallach that “stalks” hip looking strangers to showcase what’s happening now in the real world of fashion. The site is announcing a new feature powered by Media/And that tags its content and matches what “strangers” are wearing to click-to-purchase links of the actual garments. The site says that during a soft launch, more than a third of users have clicked through and better than 5% have actually purchased clothing or accessories.
Avatar Reality, the creator of the Blue Mars massively multiplayer online virtual platform, has raised an additional $4.2 million from venture capitalists including Henk Rogers and Kolohala Ventures. The company has raised more than $13 million to date.
Cloud-based music streaming service Thumbplay announced plans to leverage the Amazon Mobile Payments Service, allowing customer make purchases via smartphone or PC/Mac.
Sports sites SB Nation and National Football Post struck an advertising network partnership, with SB providing ad sales for National Football Post and both companies agreeing to promote one another’s original content.
Cablevision is partnering with RealD to support 3D telecasts beginning with last night’s telecast of the NHL Rangers/Islanders game from MSG.
Site hosting company GoDaddy.com announced it will stop registering domain names in China as a show of solidarity with Google in its fight against cyber attacks and censorship.
More than 10.8 million IPTV subscribers were added globally in 2009 bringing the total market to more than 33 million homes, an annual increase of 47% according to stats released by the Broadband Fourm. Broadband penetration is also accelerating, with more than 466 million homes connected worldwide. The Asian market showed the strongest growth with China leading the way, surpassing 100 million broadband subs to hold the top spot worldwide.

Nintendo announced plans to release a version of the handheld DS gaming device later this year featuring 3D imagery. The tentatively named “3DS” device will play current DS titles and, get this, will not require special glasses. The company is also three days away from the release of the $190 DSi XL in the U.S., featuring a fold-up 4.2″ screen The Nintendo DS is the most popular handheld gaming platform with more than 125 million units sold to date.
AT&T trumpeted a new music discovery app that combines customizable programmed commercial-free radio with Shazam-like search functionality. The $6.99/month AT&T Music service is now available for the LG Xenon, Samsung Solstice and Samsung Impression handsets.
Top celebrity news site TMZ.com launched a new mobile app for Android, featuring breaking news, community features, photos and videos.
Digital broadcast platform 1CAST launched a mobile app for the BlackBerry, providing access to shareable video content on Business, Politics, World News, Lifestyle, Entertainment.
Nickelodeon‘s upcoming Kids Choice Awards being held on March 27 will launch its own iPhone app named Nick’s Kids Choice Awards, featuring live video streaming from the “Orange carpet.” Kids will also be able to cast votes for their favorite shows directly from the app.
Babelgum announced a series of promotions in its New York office: Douglas Dicconson has been upped to Chief Revenue Officer; Seth Graeber to VP/Sales, Melissa Grossman to VP/ Sales & Marketing and Jackie Garcia to Market Development Executive. Babelgum U.S. President Ethan Podell will be also responsible for Business Development.
MomsLikeMe.com, a division of the Gannett Digital Media Network, has added Carla Wojnaroski as General Manager of the site. Carla joins MomsLikeMe.com most recently from NBC Universal/iVillage, where she was SVP/Editor-in-Chief for Health, Lifestyles & Community.

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment is partnering with the Earth Day Network to put an environmental spin on the launch of the Avatar DVD and Blu-ray, beginning April 22 in the U.S. – the 40th anniversary of Earth Day – followed by the release of additional bonus materials in Nov. and a 3D version next year. Earth Day Network will plant 1 million trees in 15 countries with the studio’s support. And much of the extra material being produced around the release will help educate viewers about environmental issues. The interactive “Avatar Program,” accessible using a code found inside the DVD, will serve as an online hub for exclusive content and special offers. In the meantime, fans can scratch their itch using their webcam to enter a Pandora-themed virtual world. The online Pandorapedia will help define all the creatures that they come across. Of course, Avatar is expected to propel the sale of Blu-ray players and 3D Television sets like no other movie yet released. The launch, announced in a news conference on Tuesday, also made headlines when director James Cameron openly attacked Fox News personality Glenn Beck, resorting to expletives and challenging Beck out to public debate. He may have something there. How about a pay per view event with all the proceeds going to the World Wildlife Foundation?
