03/23/06

Good Morning. It’s Thursday, March 23, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.

According to a survey released yesterday by the Association of National Advertisers and Forrester Research, national advertisers don’t think the 30-second TV commercial is all it used to be.  70% of the 133 advertisers surveyed believe the biggest attributing factor is the Digital Video Recorder, enabling viewers to speed past commercials, and video-on-demand.  That feeling is strong enough that 60% of those surveyed said they plan to reduce their spending on 30-second spots once the DVR penetration reaches 30 million homes.  Currently, DVRs are in 10 million homes and the projection is they will reach 30 million in the next three years. Advertisers are looking at their options – online, product placement and program sponsorships among others.

* MORE GOOD STUFF *MTV has teamed up with Rolling Stone magazine to create a new reality series in which they will search among amateur journalists to determine which should win a one year staff position with the magazine. The contestants will be asked to cover a variety of events and topics over the course of three months.  The show is expected to hit the schedule late this year.  If you’re interested in playing, check out either MTV or Rolling Stone’s website for more information and application restrictions. But get a move on – the deadline is April 7.

Two other reality shows are on their way to MTVFast Incorporated and Blowin’ Up. Fast Inc is basically a show about great cars – and finding the best vintage cars.  Blowin’ Up is a Jamie Kennedy/Stu Stone vehicle in which he attempts to make it big in the hiphop music business by stalking recording industry executives. Both are scheduled to air later on this year.

An update from MyNetworkTV:  The new venture from Twentieth Television has signed 12 new affiliates, bringing their total U.S. clearance to 55%. To date MyNetworkTV has been cleared on 64 stations across the country. The new affiliates include:
WDWB/Detroit
XUPN/San Diego
WACY/Green Bay-Appleton
WBGT/Rochester
WISE/Ft. Wayne
KAME/Reno
KTOV/Corpus Christi
WCBI/Columbus-Tupelo-West Point
KBJR/Duluth-Superior
NOSA/Odessa-Midland
WJKP/Elmira
KKRA/Rapid City

In an effort to refine its brand image, Spike TV has unveiled yet another new logo along with the tagline Get More Action. The new logo, in a manly block type, will launch on-air along with the tagline in May.  To go along with the more macho image, Spike TV will become the exclusive home of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) on cable. The new two-year deal for 2007-08 will include four new seasons of the reality series, The Ultimate Fighter, ten Ultimate Fight Night Live fight cards, and 26 episodes of UFC Unleashed.

For your social calendar — The 2006 MTV Video Music Awards return home this year to New York City, airing on Thursday, August 31 at 8p live from Radio City Music Hall.

CorrectionWE: Women’s Entertainment‘s new original series John Edward Cross Country, premiered last Friday at 10p, and was the highest-rated original series premiere ever on WE with 672,000 HH viewers, which says WE is equal to 834,000 total viewers.
 * NEW ORDERS / CASTING / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *Fox‘s comedy pilot Becoming Glen has a new titleThe Winner.  The project is about a 40-something guy looking back to the previous decade when he was still living with his parents and watching TV all day.  The comedy stars Rob Corddry with Lenny Clarke, Erinn Hayes, Julie Hagerty, and Keir Gilchrist, and is from 20th Fox TV.

Casting notes …

ABC‘s drama pilot Drift has added Marcia Gay Harden in the role of therapist to a NYPD detective suffering from insomnia.  Jason O’Mara plays the detective.  The project is from Touchstone TV.

Also at ABC, the drama project Brothers & Sisters from Touchstone TV has added Betty Buckley to the cast which already includes Calista Flockhart, Patricia Wettig and Ron Rifkin, among many others.

Romy Rosemont has been cast in the CBS drama project Shark which stars James Woods.  Rosemont will play Woods’ secretary.

NBC’s drama pilot Lipstick Jungle starring Gina Gershon, has cast Melissa George to co-star, as one of the three strong women who will do whatever it takes to get ahead in their New York City careers. The project is from NBC Universal Television.

The CW‘s Aquaman has snagged Lou Diamond Phillips to play the adoptive father to the show’s hero, played by Justin Hartley.  Other cast members include Ving Rhames, Denise Quinones and Rick Peters.  The project is from Warner Bros. TV.

Casting Call:  Racin’ for a Livin’ is looking for a female entertainment style host, between the ages of 21 and 34.  The series will bring together names like Mayfield, Foyt, and Wallace, and rookie contestants who will participate in the elimination rounds. NASCAR and/or auto racing knowledge is a plus, but not necessary.  If this is for you, go here for more info: www.RacingforaLiving.com.
