CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis: Kids!

03/23/06

Good morning. It’s Thursday, March 23, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

Doc Hollywood Studios‘ will change its name to Hollywood Studios International.  The official name change is expected to be completed within the next month.  Hollywood Studios International is comprised of Doc Hollywood Kidz, Doc Hollywood Records and Artist International Management.  The company will be based out of LA and Dubai, U.A.E. and long term plans include opening offices in London, Paris, and Sao Paulo.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

IDT Entertainment has changed the name of its animated feature film Yankee Irving to Everyone’s Hero.  Distributed domestically by Fox under a multi-picture deal with IDT Ent., the movie is slated to open nationwide on September 15, 2006.  The movie revolves around a boy who travels across the US on a quest to restore his family’s honor and return Babe Ruth’s bat before the deciding game of the 1932 World Series.  The cast features the voices of: Rob Reiner, Whoopi Goldberg, Brian Dennehy, William H. Macy, Mandy Patinkin, the late Dana Reeve (also an Executive Producer of the movie), Robert Wagner, Richard Kind, Raven-Symone, and NY Yankees Manager Joe Torre, as well as 10yr-old Jake Syzmansi.  Originally directed by actor/director Christopher Reeve, co-directors Daniel St. Pierre and Colin Brady joined the project following Reeve’s death.  Everyone’s Hero is being produced IDT Ent.’s animation’s studio in Toronto.

MORE KIDS STUFF

PBS Kids celebrates Earth Day with PBS Kids Share the Earth Day, a special two-hour programming event on Friday, April 21 (check local listings) that will feature Earth Day themed episodes of PBS Kids programs including Big Big World, Dragon Tales and Clifford the Big Red Dog.  The on-air block will be hosted by real kids in interstitial wrap-around segments, during which they will offer ideas about how kids can make a difference in the environment.  Additionally, PBS Kids Go! programming will also feature specially themed episodes of Arthur, Maya & Miguel, Postcards from Buster and Cyberchase.  Also featured will be special Earth Day-centric music videos from the music group Milkshake as well as online activities on www.pbskids.org and www.pbskidsgo.org.

Nick Jr. will premiere Dora’s First Trip a special episode of Dora the Explorer, in which Dora tells about her first adventure and how she met Boots, on Friday, April 7, 9a and 1p.  The following week on April 11, Nickelodeon and Paramount Home Entertainment will release a DVD/VHS of Dora’s First Trip.  In addition to the special the release will include three other Dora episodes, a music video entitled Best Friends, which includes Spanish and French audio options, as well as a limited bonus CD-ROM of Dora the Explorer game trials.  Finally, www.nickjr.com will highlight Dora’s First Trip from March 31, and in the parenting area will offer a printable coloring book and other activities based on the special.

The 2006 MTV Video Music Awards return home this year to New York City, where they will air Thursday, August 31, 8p live from Radio City Music Hall.  We can also look to announcements of the host, nominees and so on for the 23rd annual VMAs as well as additional VMA related programming plans for all MTV platforms to be announced soon.

TV-Loonland has closed a series of deals for properties from its animation library in Asia. TV12 Singapore has acquired TV broadcast rights to both Rudi & Trudi and My Little Pony.  UBC Thailand, a pay TV operator, has also picked up the TV rights to Rudi & Trudi as well as to Transformers, The Original Series, and Transformers, The Movie.

Star Farm Productions’ Edgar & Ellen has been picked up by Nickelodeon UK and ABC TV Australia.  Both networks will air six specials in the fall followed by the 30-minute TV series in spring 2007.  The specials center on new storytelling twists of the K8-12-targeted property.

Canada’s The Shaftesbury Sales Company has sold its kids’ comedy series Life with Derek to Toonami (U.K.), Nickelodeon (Australia), Sveriges Television, Selecta-Vision (for Spain), Noga (Israel) and e-junior (U.A.E.).  Recent sales include France 2 and Disney Channel in the U.S., Germany, Italy and Latin America.  The 30-minute production from Shaftesbury Films centers on a modern blended family and its three teenagers’ battle of wills.  It will air on Canada’s Family Channel tomorrow.

DIC Entertainment has re-acquired rights to about 20 animated kid’s series (a total of 750 half hour episodes) and some specials from Disney and Jetix Europe for TV, home entertainment and consumer products.  Under the agreement DIC will control various marketing and distribution rights for these series, which were produced by DIC, including Care Bears, Inspector Gadget, Heathcliff, Dennis the Menace, The Littles, among others, all of which will be offered at MIPTV next month.

ReelTime Rentals, Inc. signed a global broadband distribution licensing deal with Markwell Media for the kids’ syndicated TV series, What’s Up, Spike?  The Spike Davis-hosted show is available on ReelTime’s Network and on Dish Network’s Colours TV.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Dualstar Entertainment Group has inked an exclusive pact with Leisure Publishing to create and distribute a quarterly lifestyle magazine for male tweens 8-14 titled Sprouse Bros. Code, after twin-13yr-old actors Dylan and Cole Sprouse.  The magazine will include a guide to what Dylan and Cole think is cool and will include information about movies, TV, music and new gadgets and technology, sports, websites etc.  Sprouse Bros. Code will be distributed by Curtis Circulation Company with the first issue available from July 18, 2006.   Additionally, Dualstar has also signed merchandising deals for the brothers including deals with Trends International (posters) and MeadWestvaco (calendars), with a retail partner to be announced.  Dualstar entered into a partnership with the Sprouse brothers in September 2005.

Verizon Wireless customers can now download and play The Sims 2 Connected Edition and The Sims 2 from EA on select Get It Now enabled phones.

Build-A-Bear Workshop, Inc. has entered into agreement with The Murjani Group in India.  The international franchisee expects to open the first Build-A-Bear Workshop store in India later this year.  The Murjani Group was one of the first Indian companies to develop and market designer brands in the international marketplace beginning by launching Gloria Vanderbilt in 1976 followed by Tommy Hilfiger in 1984.  There are currently Build-A-Bear franchise deals in 14 countries including: Australia; Belgium; Denmark; France; India; Japan; Luxembourg; the Netherlands, Norway, the Republic of China (Taiwan); South Korea; Sweden; Thailand and the UK

Hitting the number one spot on the Billboard Top 200 chart again this week, with record sales up +3%, is the soundtrack to Disney Channel’s original movie High School Musical.  The soundtrack hit number one on this chart the first time the week of February 26.  The soundtrack also remains at number one on the Billboard Soundtrack Chart, a place it has held for six of the last eight weeks and for its ninth consecutive week on the Billboard Kids Chart.  I wonder if kids really think High School is going to be that much fun.  Wait, maybe it was  or was that a dream?

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Jean-Michel Ciszewski has been appointed SVP/International Sales and Co-Productions, Cookie Jar Entertainment.  Ciszewski replaces Sam Ewing, who returns to LA where he will now serve as Cookie Jar’s VP/Sales and Co-Productions.  Prior to this Ciszewski served as President/MoviePlus sas.  Previously Ciszewski was President/Alliance Atlantis Television Distribution.

Zola Mashariki has been upped to VP/Production, Fox Searchlight Pictures; she will report to Claudia Lewis, President/Production.  Lewis, who began at the company as a production intern five years ago was most recently Director/Production.
