03/22/12

Good morning. It’s Thursday, March 22, 2012, and this your first early morning briefing.

Cartoon Network Asia Pacific enters into an exclusive co-production deal with French animation studio Xilam, for the production of a fourth season (26×30) of the popular animated comedy series Oggy and the Cockroaches. In addition to a new season of episodes, the new agreement includes special episodes that take Oggy and the pesky cockroaches out of their usual format and into new environments. In the new season, Oggy, a big blue cat, falls in love with new character Olivia, his next door neighbor. Oggy and the Cockroaches: Season 4 will premiere on Cartoon Network across Asia Pacific in Q4 of 2012. Cartoon Network Asia Pacific has also acquired the rights to seasons one to three (65×30) for the region. Oggy and the Cockroaches was first produced in 1999 by Xilam (Zig & Sharko, The Daltons, Shuriken School, among others), which has studios in Paris and Ho-Chi-Minh City in Vietnam, and Gaumont.

Here comes Greg Heffley in Diary of A Wimpy Kid book #7. Amulet Books, an imprint of Abrams, teams with seven publishers around the world for the first-ever global release of a new Diary of a Wimpy Kid title. The seventh title in Jeff Kinney’s Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, will go on sale in the US on Tuesday, November 13, 2012. The UK, Australia, Germany, Greece, Japan, Korea, and Norway will release the book in their respective territories the day after. As for the burning question – what will be the color of the new book – we’ll likely find out around BookExpo this June. So far the series has sold 75+ million copies worldwide in 41 countries and 39 languages. Additionally, remember the third feature film installment, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days, releases in theaters on August 3, 2012.

LICENSING

In the UK, Penguin Children’s Books enters into a global publishing deal with digital design studio ustwo for the popular (and addictive) app Whale Trail. Eric Huang, Publishing Director/Media & Entertainment Group, acquires the worldwide publishing rights (all languages) for Puffin. Penguin and ustwo will create the narratives for the books, beginning with a digital picture book set for release this October 2012 and will be followed by further publishing – both digital and physical formats – in 2013. This is the first publishing deal for the Whale Trail brand, which debuted as an app. Created by ustwo, Whale Trail is a flying game where players control Willow the Whale through a magical rainbow world, as they dodge angry clouds and escape the evil Baron von Barry. Whale Trail also includes a soundtrack by Gruff Rhys of Super Furry Animals. Penguin Children’s has a history of creating book programs based on digital brands such as Club Penguin, Moshi Monsters, Skylanders.

MORE KIDS STUFF

DHX Media acquires the worldwide TV and home entertainment rights and North American licensing rights, to the new Turner Broadcasting-commissioned, mixed live action with animated elements, preschool series Ha Ha Hairies (52×12). Turner Broadcasting holds EMEA broadcast and home entertainment rights to Ha Ha Hairies, which airs on its Cartoonito channel in 112 territories across EMEA. Ha Ha Hairies is produced, in both English and Welsh, by UK-based Adastra Creative (Grandpa in My Pocket). DHX Media will be debuting Ha Ha Hairies at MIPTV, along with other preschool properties such as Rastamouse and Monster Math Squad.

BabyFirstTV (www.babyfirsttv.com), a TV channel targeted to young kids, is now available on AT&T U-verse Live App for Android and Blackberry phones. Android and Blackberry users can watch BabyFirstTV by subscribing to the Playground TV package within the Live TV app. The AT&T U-verse home service is not required.

Recording artist Fergie and NBA star Dwight Howard (Center, Orlando Magic) guest star in a new episode of the animated series Kick Buttowski  Suburban Daredevil, this Saturday, March 24 at 11a on Disney XD. In the episode Fergie lends her April, Brad’s dream girl, and Howard voices movie star Rock Callahan.

Breakthrough Entertainment completes program sales for several kids TV series.  Dish Network/Blockbuster USA acquires The Droogles, an educational series that combines puppets and cut-out 2D animation, and Swap TV – a tween-targeted live action documentary series where kids swap lives for a weekend. Additionally, the mixed live action and CGI animated series Dino Dan has been picked up by YLE (Finland), CTC Kazakhstan and Canal+ Group’s Piwi+ (France).

Paris-based producer/distributor Millimages signs a broadcast deal for its new animated preschool property Mouk (62×11) with ABC TV (Australia), which will debut the series later this year for its ABC4Kids preschool audience. Based on the Mouk book by Marc Boutavant and directed by Francois Narboux, Mouk was commissioned by France Televisions and Disney Channel UK. Prior to this Disney acquired Mouk for its networks in France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Benelux, Scandinavia, Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Africa, and just last week KiKA (Germany) also picked up the series. Millimages holds all international TV and licensing and merchandising rights to the property.
