China is the now the leader in Android and iOS activations, according to a new report from mobile analytics firm Flurry. Tracking what it said was its entire data set (more than 1 billion anonymous, aggregated app sessions per day), Flurry found that new iOS and Android device activations in China surpassed those in the U.S. for the first time in history at some point in February. In January 2011, China accounted for 8% of the world’s total iOS and Android device activations, while the U.S. accounted for 28%. Flurry projects that by the end of March 2012, China will hold down a 24% share of worldwide iOS and Android device activations, while the U.S. will slide to 21%. The firm estimates that since the U.S. is a more mature market, it currently has more than twice as many active devices than China. However, with China’s market growing so rapidly, that gap is closing.
CSI creator Anthony E. Zuiker’s production company Dare to Pass, in partnership with Yahoo!, have announced that casting and production will officially begin on the Cybergeddon project, a feature film that will be globally distributed first across Yahoo!’s digital properties. To be presented in a series of sequential installments, the companies said that the project will engage Yahoo!’s worldwide audience of 700 million unique visitors through an immersive storytelling, social media and gaming experience. As the narrative centers on the growing threat of cybercrime, Zuiker has tapped the services of Norton by Symantec to offer its technical expertise and insights in order to inform and guide the narrative. The deal has also been backed by financier and distribution company Dolphin Digital Media, and was brokered and packaged by Creative Artists Agency (CAA). The film will be rolled out in Fall 2012.
CBS Local Digital Media has launched its newest app, the YourDay app for the iPad. The app provides users a constant stream of local sports, news, lifestyle, weather and traffic information and content, all of which can be shared via Facebook, Twitter and email. Its auto-location detection capability finds the nearest CBS market, and also allows users the option to explore any of the 24 major markets across the country. YourDay also features the ability to listen to CBS Radio stations, delivers high quality video from CBS owned and operated television stations, and offers access to local offers and “Best Of” user guides. Users can also customize the app by choosing which section they want most prominently featured on the homepage. It is immediately available for free in the Apple App Store.
In honor of its sixth birthday yesterday, Twitter posted some statistics regarding its user base and activity. Primarily, Twitter now has over 140 million active users and sees as much as 340 million tweets a day.
At an Upfront presentation at New York City’s Sony Club, GSN announced that it has become one of the largest online game publishers in the world. Data it offered proving the claim included: More than 2 million users visit a GSN game platform every day; Users will play 7 billion games this month on GSN game platforms; its recently launched mobile games app is serving 50,000 players per day; and CPMStar, GSN’s games vertical ad network, reaches 70 million unique visitors per month. Sony Pictures Entertainment and DirectTV own GSN and its subsidiary, WorldWinner.com.
Convertro, an online marketing company, has launched a new platform that it says will provide marketers with real-time metrics to measure the performance of television advertising and its impact on online channels. “In measuring the performance of any marketing campaign, our tools [provide] insights not only about the success of the campaign, but also whether it was more effective within a particular segment of users, on- or offline. We then leverage this data to quickly deploy campaign changes that result in increased leads, revenue, profit and spend levels across marketing channels,” says CEO Jeff Zwelling. According to him, this new system is “the holy grail for advertisers and agencies — it gives them the ability to accurately measure and quantify ROI, revenues and true profits from television advertising campaigns, as well as their impact on online channels, with consistent measurement.”
At its Adobe Digital Marketing Summit in Salt Lake City, Adobe unveiled Adobe Social, a new product within its Digital Marketing Suite that combines social publishing and engagement with monitoring, social ad buying and analytics. The platform builds upon the social media management and monitoring and analytics technologies the company already provides. Among the features it will provide clients: streamlined and centralized publishing across social platforms; automated targeting and personalization of content and experiences in social apps and across social platforms; seamless integration of the Sponsored Story ad creation within the publishing workflow; import analytics data from Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Google+, blogs and other social platforms; monitor sentiment and receive alerts on relevant trends; creation and deployment of social apps, such as contests or forms, without the need for design or development resources; and more. Adobe Social will be available in the latter half of 2012.
Wildlife, a global provider of social media marketing software, with over 13,000 clients that include 30 of the world’s 50 most valuable brands (including Amazon, Target, Virgin and even Facebook itself for its own Facebook marketing page) is reporting some significant growth milestones. Wildfire has powered over 200,000 social marketing campaigns, with brands on average experiencing a 400% increase in fan growth while using the platform. The company’s revenue grew by 300% in 2011. A quarter of the revenue came from outside the U.S. as the company also reports that its international business grew by 500%. Wildlife is the only social media marketing company to receive investment from Facebook’s fbFund. The company also announced that it has brought Doug Laird, formerly of SAP/Virsa, QlikTech, Oracle and Siebel, on board as its new CMO.
Zynga has officially agreed to buy OMGPOP, the maker of the Draw Something game, for the reported price (as Zynga did not officially disclose the terms of the deal) of $180 million, with an additional $30 million going toward employee-retention related payments.
Research firm BIA/Kelsey forecasts local digital ad revenues to reach $38.5 billion by 2016, jumping up from the $21.2 billion local digital advertising generated in 2011. This represents a compound annual growth rate of 12.7%. The firm says that this growth in the digital field will offset slower than anticipated growth in total local media ad revenues. However, citing a slow U.S. economy through most of 2011, the firm expects a lower level of local ad revenues than it had originally projected. In October 2011, the firm predicted that the total U.S. local media market would reach $135.9 billion in revenues for the year. It now expects that number to be $132.8 billion. “Based on the changes in our estimates going forward, we expect the overall local media market will grow a bit more slowly over the next five years,” said Mark Fratrik, VP & Chief Economist, BIA/Kelsey.
The season 2 finale of ABC Family’s Pretty Little Liars generated the most social media buzz for any one-hour episode of TV on record, with more than 720,000 comments, according to SocialGuide. In addition, it was the #1 social media program of the night according to numbers from Trendrr, with a “total activity” of 842,000. The episode generated 32,000 tweets per minute at its peak, with a total of 645,000 tweets over the hour and nearly 1.6 million over the course of this past Monday’s all-day “catch-up” marathon. The Twitter data was courtesy of TweetReach. It “was one of the biggest hours of TV on Twitter we’ve ever seen,” said TweetReach Founder Jenn Deering Davis.
The use of 2D mobile barcodes to drive customers to content is a growing trend, according to a February 2012 study from Competitrack, per eMarketer. In February, 40.7% of 2D barcodes directed users toward general commerce and product info, while 23.2% sent them to branded digital properties. Videos were another big feature of this type of campaign, with 12.7% of U.S. 2D barcode ads driving customers to video content. When broken down by the top U.S. industries to implement mobile barcode ad campaigns, the top two were the retail (21.9% of all campaigns) and technology (13.6%). Competitrack also found that the QR code is still the leading 2D barcode format for the ad industry, with almost 90% market penetration.
Here is a study from Nielsen regarding the January 2012 audience of a selection of news & information websites that feature political content. 23% more 18-34 year-olds visited Google News than were overall active online during January 2012. 31% more Americans in the 35-49 demo visited Politico and Drudge Report than their internet average during that month. NPR has seen a 21% boost in visitors since October 2011. 28% of visitors to Wall Street Journal Digital have a household income of $100K or more. 36% of Drudge Report visitors have a bachelor’s degree, while only 17% of the overall active internet audience can say the same. Nielsen also looked at voting-aged visitor data in regard to the candidates’ campaign websites:
- More U.S. adults visited President Obama’s campaign website in January than the four Republican candidates’ sites combined.
- Rick Santorum’s site has the highest percentage of female visitors (60%) among the five candidates.
- Newt Gingrich’s audience is the most affluent and educated, as 27% make over $100K and half have a bachelor’s or post-grad degree.
