Good morning. It’s Thursday, March 20, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing.
Britt Allcroft has re-acquired the underlying rights to Mumfie, the “little elephant with great big heart”. Allcroft is best known as the creator of Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends TV series, which is based on The Railway series books by Rev. W. Awdy as well as Shining Time Station. Allcroft’s own Britt Allcroft Productions re-purchased the rights from Bridgefilms Ltd., part of the Hit Entertainment Group, which has owned the property since 1999 (the series aired in the US on Fox). The terms of the deal were announced. Allcroft wrote and produced the series Britt Allcroft’s Magic Adventures of Mumfie for TV in the 1990s.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Horrible Histories to return to TV, but this time it will be live-action and for the BBC’s CBBC, per Broadcast Now, versus the previous Mike Young Productions animated version that aired on ITV’s CITV. From Lion TV, the new live-action Horrible Histories (13×30) is to be a sketch comedy series and will be produced by Richard Bradley and Caroline Norris. Other recent new CBBC fact-based series commissions include Red Alert (13×30/2008) and Explorers (13×30/2009).
TV-Loonland begins production on two seasonal specials based on its preschool series Little Princess. TV-Loonland has teamed up with The Illuminated Film Company, producers of Little Princess, and UK broadcaster, Five, to premiere 2×22 minute specials themed around Halloween and Christmas 2008.
MORE KIDS STUFF
All3Media International concludes two format development deals for the teen drama Skins. The series has been optioned to Cuarzo TV (Spain) and to MediaPro Distribution (Romania). These follow a recently completed pact for a pay TV window for the series to Teuve (Spain). Skins, now in its second season, current airs on E4 and Channel Four in the UK.
Exilene Films names The Box Distribution as the international distributor for the teen-targeted series Five (52×26, and an additional season currently in development). Five currently airs during the teen slot KD2A on France 2. The series revolves around five teens at boarding school that put together a band.
Turner Broadcasting picks up a second season of the live-action K6-12-targeted series My Spy Family for its Boomerang channel in the UK. A co-production between Turner and Kindle Entertainment, the new season of My Spy Family is comprised of 20×22 and is set to begin production in July 2008. Decode Enterprises will retain the distribution rights. The remaining 13 episodes from the first season are slated to premiere on Boomerang from March 25 at 5p.
BBC Magazines will launch two of its kid-aimed titles, Learning is Fun and Charlie and Lola, in Singapore this April. The cover price for the magazines will be $4.90 and the print run between 5,000-10,000 copies.
MARKETING/LICENSING
Miffy and Friends is going hopping in some news shoes and sporting engraved products under new deals inked by Big Tent Entertainment, which represents the property in North America, and Skechers and Etchstar. Under the agreement, Skechers will distribute Miffy Cali Bits shoe charms in department stores, footwear specialty stores and Skechers stores in 2008, while Etchstar makes Miffy images available worldwide for the laser engraving of electronics. Additionally, Big Tent has signed a deal with Adorable Kids (apparel, robes, loungewear etc), expanding the Miffy brand into Canada. Miffy is also set to step out in her debut at Hot Topic stores with a tween/teen-targeted line. Other recent Miffy license deals include those with Loungefly, Mighty Fine, Inc. and Innovative Designs.
Lionsgate partners National CineMedia’s Fathom to host the Bratz dolls in their upcoming animated musical DVD (fall 2008), Bratz: Girlz Really Rock, in a one-day in-theater event on April 19 at 10a. Presented by Fathom in partnership with Lionsgate and MGA Entertainment, the sneak peak will take place at about 400 movie theaters nationwide. Additionally, a never before seen Bratz TV episode will be screened at the event. Tickets are available at theaters and online at www.fathomevents.com , the site also offers a list of theaters where the preview will play. Bratz: Girlz Really Rock includes new songs and a new character.
4Kids Entertainment teams with Subway for a Yu-Gi-Oh! GX promotion at Subway restaurants, March 24 May 11. Yu-Gi Oh! GX branded premiums will be available with purchase of any Subway Fresh Fit Kids Meal at restaurants in the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. The promotion then extends to the UK and Ireland, where it will run April 7-May 18. The promotion will be supported at www.subwaykids.com . STONE SOUP
Kabillion, the kid-aimed multiplatform service, launches a kid only (k7-17) American Idol contest, American Idol Ticket Giveaway. To take part in the sweepstakes kids need to be registered Kabillion users and must also create their own avatar at www.kabillion.com/idol . The community then vote on the favorite avatars, now through April 29. Each vote kids cast serves as an entry into the contest, as does each vote received. The winner gets to go to the American Idol finale in LA this May. Beginning this week,
EXECUTIVE MOVES
New Line Cinema names Toby Emmerich as its new President & COO. Emmerich will lead New Line’s reorganization to become a stand-alone production entity as part of Warner Bros. Entertainment. As previously announced, New Line will continue to maintain its own development, creative and production teams. New Line’s marketing, publicity, distribution, business and legal affairs and physical production will report to Emmerich, while also closely coordinate with their Warner Bros. counterparts. Emmerich, who joined New Line Cinema in 1992, most recently served as President/Production.
Disney appoints Peter Fitton to the new role of VP/International Sales, Disney Media Advertising Sales and Marketing Group. The group oversees all ad sales, marketing and promotions business for Disney’s kid and family TV platforms, online, publishing and kid and mom-focused radio. Charged with maximizing global ad sales for Disney Channels Worldwide, Fitton will oversee ad sales strategies in all markets outside the US, while also being responsible for establishing cross-market partnerships. He will report to EVP, Tricia Wilber. Most recently, Fitton was Director, New Business Development, MTV Networks Digital. Previously he was VP/Commercial Director, Turner Broadcasting France.
