HBO Go and MAX Go are now officially available for Cablevision’s iO TV digital cable subscribers. This expands the number of available TV Everywhere services for Cablevision customers to 12, including those offered by CNN, TBS, TNT, truTV, Adult Swim, Cartoon Network, MSG Varsity and more. The cable company has also launched a new web page for consumers to get more info on and access all of the available TV Everywhere services. Cablevision notes that the digital access is not confined to the home as Cablevision’s Optimum Wi-Fi network, which spans more than 35,000 indoor and outdoor access points, enables Optimum Online high-speed internet subscribers to watch content via a wireless-enabled device on-the-go. For those stationed inside the house, the Optimum mobile app for Apple devices offers Cablevision’s full cable television service, including live and on-demand programming, as well as DVR controls and the ability to turn the device into a remote control for TVs that are connected to set-top boxes.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

Amazon has struck a licensing deal with Discovery Communications that will allow Amazon Prime members to stream prior seasons of TV shows and specials from Discovery Channel, TLC, Animal Planet, Investigation Discovery, Science and Military Channel, as well as even older content from Discovery’s 25 year-old programming library. Among the shows included in the agreement are popular fare like Dirty Jobs and Whale Wars. Amazon Prime’s selection of videos now stands at more than 17,000 titles.

A&E Network will offer access the premiere episode of Duck Dynasty, a new original series, through several online platforms and VOD, for one week before it airs on March 21. The episode will be available from March 14 through March 20 via AETV.com, Hulu, iTunes and video on-demand. The reality series follows a Louisiana family that is operating a successful duck call business.

adRise, a San Francisco-based company that provides a video ad exchange for connected TVs, has launched adRise Connect, a free connected TV distribution platform that will enable content owners to build, distribute and monetize video apps. adRise Connect will be compatible with all major connected TV platforms, thereby preventing content owners from incurring the additional costs of having to build multiple apps for multiple devices. In exchange for offering the platform for free, adRise would take a cut of the profit the apps make from ads, which are powered by adRise’s video advertising technology. adRise has previously developed a full connected TV app offering for Starz Digital Media’s Manga Entertainment. Some of the platforms supported by adRise Connect include Google TV, Boxee, Roku, Samsung and iOS.

Online network Revision3 has launched two new vertical channels, Rev3 Games and Rev3 Tech, both of which can be found on Revision3, YouTube and across Revision3’s entire distribution network. Rev3 Games and Rev3 Tech feature gaming and tech programming in the form of quick clips, reviews, recommendations and more. Rev3 Games will include content from popular Revision3 shows, such as Destructoid and New Challenger, as well as newly created segments “Good Jobs” and “Casual Fridays.” Rev3 Tech will pull content from GeekBeat and Tekzilla, among other shows, as well as special segments that coincide with product announcements and industry events.

~ TECH DEALS, MERGERS & SKIRMISHES ~

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment has partnered with Taubman Centers to develop and install Fox Movie Mall virtual storefronts at 26 participating Taubman shopping malls across the country. Following the introduction of the Fox Movie Mall app in the Apple App Store and Android Market, the companies announced that shoppers at the participating malls will be allowed to select a movie from a “wallscape” and scan its accompanying QR code via the app on their smartphone; after which they will be directed to an online store where they can purchase that movie. The movie(s) will then be shipped to their home. Shoppers who use the app will be able to save up to 50% on their purchases, and will also receive access to additional features, such as trailers, movie and TV clips and the RIO coloring app. The yearlong partnership between the two companies officially kicks off on March 16.

Verizon Wireless has announced that it will expand its 4G LTE service to seven new markets today, bringing the service’s total number of covered markets to 203. The expansion won’t end there, however, as the company also stated that it plans to bring its 4G LTE service to more than 400 total markets by the end of 2012, which would translate to coverage for over 260 million people. Verizon currently offers the service on more than 20 devices, including tablets and smartphones.

Imagine Communications, a provider of advanced digital video solutions, has announced a system upgrade to its ICE Video Platform, which will now provide system operators with a single unified appliance for processing HD and standard definition IPTV streams, as well as Adaptive Bit Rate (ABR) streams for multiscreen delivery. Available in a 1 Rack Unit package or as a NEBS-compliant Blade System, the ICE Video Platform is built for IPTV service providers who need to deploy more channels with higher picture quality, and then add support for multiple device types, such as the new iPad, and other new mobile platforms with 1080p support. In total, the platform is an all-in-one solution that incorporates audio and video transcoding, picture in picture creation, multiscreen transcoding and multi-format media streaming, and which Imagine says is currently serving thousands of live streams to over 20 million North American households.

Even though eMarketer estimates digital ad sales for newspapers to increase 11.4% in 2012, it will not offset the lost revenue coming from decreases in U.S. spending on print ads, as it is expected to drop another 6% to $19.4 billion in 2012. However, the report also notes that newspapers are more open to different opportunities available through the digital space, believing that targeted advertising and videos will account for a larger share of digital revenue in the coming year. eMarketer cites a March 2012 study from the Pew Project for Excellence in Journalism, which found that 93% of U.S. newspapers selling online targeted advertising believe it will take up a larger share in 2012. Furthermore, 88% of U.S. newspapers said video ads will take up a larger share of digital revenue this year. As for mobile, Pew found that between Q4 of 2010 and Q4 of 2011, mobile ad revenues for U.S. newspapers jumped from 0.1% to 0.9% of total digital revenues. eMarketer predicts a continued growth in online ad spend for U.S. newspapers, reaching $4.5 billion by 2016.

Meredith Corporation has appointed Todd Tarpley to be its GM/Parents Network Digital, a newly created position. Reporting to Liz Schimel, EVP & Chief Digital Officer, Tarpley will lead the digital business strategy and execution of The Parents Network’s portfolio of sites. He will also collaborate closely with both the editorial and digital editorial teams to expand the reach and engagement of The Parents Network cross-platform digital brands. The Parents Network brand portfolio includes the Parents, American Baby, FamilyFun and Ser Padres properties.

Ari Perler has been named VP/Market Research & Strategic Sales Insights, NBCUniversal Cable & New Media Distribution and NBCUniversal Domestic Television Distribution. In the newly created role, Perler will be involved in all sales strategies and presentations in the licensing of off-network programs and films to cable and new media platforms, as well as support the sale of national advertising for the division’s first-run and off-network product. Perler will also support program distribution efforts in Canada and will work closely with senior management on sales strategy and the development of future goals for the various distribution businesses into which he reports.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

The Met Opera on Demand iPad app, which was launched yesterday, allows classical music lovers to access unlimited video and audio streams from The Metropolitan Opera’s award-winning Live in HD series, along with hundreds of historic TV and radio broadcasts. Productions currently available on the app include this season’s opening-night production of Anna Bolena; Don Giovanni; and last season’s Le Comte Ory. New content will be added on a monthly basis. Features designed to boost the user experience include an in-depth search functionality, the ability to create favorite lists, sharing across Facebook and Twitter and subtitles in multiple languages. While the app is free to download, subscriptions beginning at $14.99/month are required to access the streaming content; however, the app is offering a free seven-day trial for those interesting in checking it out. Subscribers will have another added benefit of being able to stream content from the app on their personal computers.
