Cynopsis: DIGITAL
03.14.13
Good morning. It’s Thursday, March 14, 2013, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Netflix subscribers in the US can now link their accounts to Facebook in order to share their viewing activity. Users will be able to access their Facebook friends’ favorite titles as well as list what they’ve watched on Netflix. For those worried about social privacy, have no fear: the default setting when the accounts are linked enables sharing only within Netflix, but can be changed to share on Facebook, too. Users will also be able to share and recommend individual Netflix titles on Facebook. The social features will roll out to all Netflix subscribers in the US by the end of this week.
AMC Networks has debuted YEAH!, a transactional VOD service that allows users to rent and watch movies online. Each film costs $4.99 for a 48-hour rental window. It also offers a wide array of bonus content tied to each film, and displays it on screen as the film is playing. The bonus content includes never-before-seen interviews with the filmmakers and stars, as well as facts and quizzes. AMC says the content does not obscure the viewing experience; for example, if a viewer wants to watch an interview, he or she can pause the movie and play the interview with just one click. A YEAH! iPad app will roll out this summer.
Fullscreen has signed an agreement with filmmaker Devin Graham, the man behind the DevinSuperTramp YouTube channel, to co-produce a web series featuring extreme sports and epic stunts. Fullscreen will handle creative marketing, promotional, and publicity campaigns for each episode, as well as oversee all live social events and audience engagement initiatives for the series. The DevinSuperTramp YouTube channel just hit the 1-million-subscriber milestone. Graham’s videos have appeared on mainstream outlets such as CNN, MSN, Fox News, Yahoo, MSNBC, BuzzFeed, and Mashable, among others.
Principato-Young Entertainment has launched the second season of Watsky’s Releasing an Album on Electus’ pop culture YouTube original channel, LOUD. His own YouTube channel currently boasts nearly 420,000 subscribers and more than 69.8 million video views. The six-episode second season documents Watsky’s efforts to make his recently released album, Cardboard Castles, and features Rhys Darby (Flight of the Conchords) and fellow YouTube stars DumbFoundDead and Meredith Monroe. Written by Watsky, the second season was directed by Jackson Adams.

Cross-device ad solutions provider Tapad is partnering with TRUSTe to develop a privacy preferences system for mobile apps. TRUSTe’s Mobile Ads privacy management service will be integrated into the Tapad platform within the next two months. The goal is to give mobile users greater control over their privacy settings through “persistent” opt-out controls. The controls will be accessible via a “unified identifier” on the Tapad platform. Tapad says it’s also working with Evidon to develop an industry-first “in-app, opt-out” solution, which will likely be available in the near future.
thePlatform’s cloud-based video publishing system, mpx, is powering BT’s new IPTV services, BT Vision and YouView from BT, in the UK. “thePlatform enables us to simplify many of our back-end processes by providing a centralized video logistics system capable of publishing video to our new set-top boxes and other IP-connected devices in the future,” said BT’s Director/TV, Alex Green, in a statement. Based in Seattle, thePlatform is an independent subsidiary of Comcast.
The USC Digital Repository will use Levels Beyond’s Reach Engine Studio product to help content owners monetize their video libraries. With this deal, clients will be able to digitize, preserve, and store a video library within the Repository and then use web-based tools to manage, edit, package, and distribute their content to any content delivery network, website, or individual, anywhere in the world. The partners say this arrangement is ideal for large public media collections and commercial studio archives, as well as small scholarly and programming libraries.
Americans are increasingly spending more time streaming video on gaming consoles. According to Nielsen data, 22% of American users’ overall time spent on gaming consoles in 2012 was devoted to watching video via VOD and streaming services. This is up from 19% in 2011 and 13% in 2010. When broken down by the major consoles, PS3 users spent 24% of their console time in 2012 streaming content (up from 15% in 2011, representing the highest year-over-year growth among the three major consoles). In comparison, Xbox 360 users spent roughly 13% and Wii owners devoted 32% of their time streaming content, respectively. Nielsen’s report covers US console users ages 13 and above.
A blog post from Google CEO Larry Page reveals that the creator of the Android operating system, Andy Rubin, is leaving the team, but not Google. “Andy’s decided it’s time to hand over the reins and start a new chapter at Google,” said Page. Sundar Pinchai will now take charge of Android, along with continuing to oversee Chrome and Apps.
Fullscreen has named Brendan Gahan as its new VP/Brand Strategy. He will be responsible for YouTube programming strategy, channel management, and video optimization for the growing roster of brands and media clients Fullscreen works with today, that includes NBC, McDonald’s, and Fox, among others.
Social media analytics and measurement firm Socialbakers has named Rob Schatzel as its new VP/Sales, North America. In his new role, Schatzel will focus on introducing and growing the Socialbakers product in the North American market.
A CYNOPSIS MESSAGE
Who’s a fan of Game of Thrones on HBO? Pretty much everybody. With the third season of the show scheduled to arrive on HBO at the end of this month, here’s something pretty cool to get you amped for it: School of Thrones, an original web series on YouTube that takes George R.R. Martin’s characters and recasts them as high schoolers, all operating in different cliques. “Prom Night is Coming” at Westeros Valley High. Isn’t the internet a wonderful place?
