Titles from 20th Century Fox, Walt Disney Pictures, Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Universal Pictures and Warner Bros. Digital Distribution will initially be available through the PlayStation Network in the U.S., with plans to extend distribution to the U.K., France, Germany, and Spain. Meanwhile SCEA is releasing an update to its PlayStation Home virtual social networking arena on Thursday, streamlining the process of adding friends, navigating personal spaces and keeping up with recommended “hot” spaces. Sony says that “Home” is now home to 12 million registered users worldwide, who average about 60 minutes per session.

NAB chairman Paul Karpowicz sent the FCC a letter of his own regarding retransmission-consent rules after a group of pay TV providers suggested that arbitration procedures be enacted, per Multichannel News. ~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

While social media users seem to pay more attention to email (26.7%) and internet advertising (28.3%) than the average adult (23.4% and 23.1% respectively), face-to-face recommendations are still the biggest influencer of online searches, according to a new study conducted by BIGResearch for the Retail Advertising and Marketing Association (RAMA). Social media influence also tends to skew based on gender: Men who use social media are much more likely than women to be influenced by internet advertising (32.8% vs. 24.1%), instant messaging (12.0% vs. 7.2%) and blogs (14.3% vs. 10.4%). However, the influence of e-mail advertising and online communities is almost identical between genders.

Continuing with its mission to not be evil, Google unveiled the beta version of a handy online Bicycle mapping option on Google Maps that helps identify the best urban bike routes across 150 U.S. cites. (“By car” and “Public Transit” options are also available.) The feature, timed for release during the National Bike Summit in Washington this week, folds in trail data from the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy combined with other publicly available bike route info. Type in where you’re starting from and where you’re going to and Google Maps will identify the easiest (least hilly/dangerous) route. Of course, the application would be far more useful for smartphones, but rest assured the company is working on a GPS-powered mobile version that will add info about local bike shops, etc. Of course, skeptics will say the app is all a part of Google’s plan to keep tabs on you, no matter what vehicle you may use. This video, produced by Hungry Beast for Australian television, says it all. (Thanks to Consumer Watchdog for the link.)
