CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis

03/10/05

Good morning. It’s Thursday, March 10, 2005, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Tonight’s Premiere:
CBS:     CBS Evening News with Bob Schieffer (until a permanent anchor is named)
FUSE:  The Ultimate Fuse Gig: The VJ Search at 10p

Showtime‘s Fat Actress debuted on Monday night at 10p, earning the distinction as network’s highest rated premiere in five years (last biggie was Queer as Folk in 2000) with 924,000 total viewers, representing a 4.2 HH coverage rating in Showtime homes. The 11p airing delivered 400,000 viewers. While the net’s policy is not to provide ratings (premium channel, not advertiser supported), they did say the primary audience was Women 35+, and M35-49 was the secondary audience.

The new season of Deadwood premiered on Sunday night on HBO to the tune of 2.8 million viewers, down from last season’s debut with 5.8 million viewers.  Carnivale followed with 1.96 million viewers.

USA Network has signed Saab Cars as the sole sponsor of the documentary Ring of Fire: The Emile Griffith Story, per Variety.  The doc will be shown without commercial interruption, and Saab will have an opening spot and a closing spot.  Ring of Fire was presented at Sundance Film Festival and it spotlights the 1962 boxing incident where Emile Griffith met Kid Paret in the ring, and killed him.  Ring of Fire was directed by Dan Klores and Ron Berger.

* NEW ORDERS / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *

VH1 has ordered up additional seasons of The Surreal Life (10 eps), Celebrity Fit Club (8 eps) and Best Week Ever.  The net has also ordered additional episodes of Motormouth (20 new eps) and The Fabulous Life (10 new eps).  And scheduled to kick off in in 2005 are three new series to VH1, per Variety:

BSTV (Ealing Studios) sets people up to think they’re auditioning for a reality show, when in fact they’re really getting punk’d.
Kept is a reality show wherein 15 men compete for a year of luxury and a six figure salary from Jerry Hall, fka Mrs. Mick Jagger.
Love Lounge is set to debut on May 16 and follows a group discussion on the truths and myths of s#x, marriage and relationships.

Paramount Network TV has signed a two year development deal with Alan Kirschenbaum to develop to new projects for the studio.  Kirschenbaum currently is the exec prod and co-creator of Yes Dear (CBS) and will continue to oversee that project.

* MORE GOOD STUFF *

The Weather Channel will be 23 years old this May, and it took 22 years before it produced its first primetime original series – Storm Stories. At the network’s upfront last evening in NYC, TWC announced the return of Storm Stories with a handful of themed weeks, plus three other original undertakings.

Weekend View is scheduled to launch this summer, airing from 7-11am on Saturday and Sunday morning, the net’s “most important important dayparts” says Patrick Scott, President/TWC. Weekend View will provide current and relevant weather updates as well as lifestyle information to help viewers plan their weekends.
If It Happens Tomorrow is a weekly series coming in 2005 that looks at extravagant weather disasters in history and asks what would happen if they occurred again today.
And a series of specials called Weather’s Top Ten, focusing on the superlatives of weather locations – rainiest, coldest, windiest, etc,

The net will also launch a new logo and tag line this summer, to coincide with the start of Weekend View. The new tag is Bringing Weather to Life. The new logo will no longer represent a small screen TV set with soft letters, but one that more resembles an open window, hard chined with bold lettering. The difference may appear slight a first, but the look is wholly updated and refreshing, and designed to be easily seen and read on small screens (i.e., cell phones). The new campaign was developed by Lambie Nairn of London.

Intermedia Advertising Group’s Top Ten Most Recalled New Ads and Top Ten Most Liked New Ads for new campaigns airing during the month of February (1/31/05-2/27/05).  The list is ranked by viewers’ ability to recall the new ads (or how much they like them) and their associated products and brands.
