CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis: Kids!

06/08/06

Good morning. It’s Thursday, June 8, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

The Nutty Professor is making its way to Broadway as a musical and will be directed by his nuttiness Jerry Lewis, who of course starred in the original 1963 version of the movie, according to the New York Times.  The musical will star Michael Andrew, a singer/comedian who heads up the Michael Andrew Company, which acquired the rights to The Nutty Professor and will produce the show.  Lewis is looking for the show to open on Broadway in fall 2008.

Leroy & Stitch a new animated full length movie, featuring Stitch’s evil twin Leroy, will make its world premiere on Disney Channel on June 23 at 8p, immediately following two new episodes of the Lilo & Stitch series.  Toon Disney will air the new movie on June 26 at 5p, after its Lilo & Stitch 5-hour marathon featuring viewer-selected episodes. The next day, June 27, Disney Home Entertainment will release Leroy & Stitch on DVD.  Reprising their roles from the original Lilo & Stitch movie are Daveigh Chase (Lilo); Tia Carrere (Nani); Kevin McDonald (Pleakley); David Ogden Stiers (Dr. Jumba) and Chris Sanders (Stitch), and will also star Jeff Bennett (Dr. Hamsterviel); Kevin Michael Richardson (Captain Gantu) and Jillian Henry (Elena).

While in reality summer vacation is close, oh so close, The Degrassi kids are just starting the new school year as The N begins production on the sixth season (19 eps) of Degrassi: The Next Generation in Toronto.  In addition to following the trials of new and returning Degrassi students, the new season will tag along with several characters who have now graduated and are moving on to college and full-time jobs.  In school storylines include a fierce school rivalry (which could mean jail time for a student) and the dangers of social networking websites.  Parent discussion guides will continue to be available at http:\discussions.the-n.com.  Produced by Epitome Pictures, the new episodes of Degrassi are slated to bow on The N from October 2006.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Users will have access to Sorpresa!’s video library including programs such as soccer anime series Super Campeones, environmental/educational live action series Arcandina from Ecuador, Mexican-produced educational programs Kolitas and La Nave de TikTak, Chilean variety show Cachureos and Puerto Rican pre-school series Tienda Magica.

New Parent Media has unveiled its plans to launch Toddler magazine, which will be targeted to parents with kids 1-4 years old.  Not surprisingly the editorial in Toddler will include topics such as healthy development, travel, food, toys, gear and family among other things.  Toddler will be published four times a year, with the first issue slated to step into the market in April 2007.  New Parent Media also publishes, New Parent Magazine and New Parent en Espanol.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Bandai America Incorporated and Cartoon Network are unveiling the new line of Ben 10 toys this month, based on Cartoon Network’s animated action/adventure series Ben 10.  The Ben 10 toy line includes a range of action figures (various sizes), alien vehicles, role-play, playsets and other products.  Created by Man Of Action and produced at Cartoon Network Studios, Ben 10 debuted on the network in January of this year.  As of this week Ben 10 airs weekdays at 5:30p.

Funimation Entertainment and Destineer Publishing Corp. have entered into a licensing deal that will bring a new line of video games, based on the anime property Fullmetal Alchemist, to North America.  The new Fullmetal Alchemist video games will be available for a range of gaming platforms with the first titles slated for release this year.  The new line will be released through an exclusive publishing agreement with Destineer.  Fullmetal Alchemist airs on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim in the US.  The series is for older teens and up.

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment will release Justice League Heroes: The Flash for Game Boy Advance and Justice League Heroes for the Nintendo DS this fall 2006.  Distributed by Eidos Interactive, the games will release simultaneously with the Justice League Heroes games for PS2, Xbox and PSP systems.  Justice League Heroes: The Flash was developed by WayForward Technologies and Just League Heroes was developed by Sensory Sweep Studios.

Guppy Games, a mobile games developer/publisher, will launch Girls Inc. TeamUp, a new mobile puzzle/strategy game, this summer on mobile carriers in the US and worldwide this summer.  Based on a PC game by Large Animal Games and Girls Inc., Girls Inc. TeamUp is designed specifically for those new to mobile games and young female gamers.  The game features three girl characters, each with her own special ability, and the players must help them work together to find the exit and solve the puzzle of each of the 50 different levels.  The game also includes a design-a-level mode and the ability to share those levels with other players through Guppy Games’ network of mobile gamers.  The game was jointly developed by Guppy Games and ZIO Interactive.

Warner Home Video, Hearst Entertainment and King Features Syndicate have inked a deal for the worldwide home video distribution of both the classic Popeye theatrical and made-for-TV animated shorts.  WHV will serve as the exclusive global home entertainment distributor for shorts, which includes the rights to the original 231 Popeye shorts released in theaters by Paramount Pictures (1933-1957). On the TV side WHV has cleared the exclusive rights to 220 Popeye TV shorts (1960-1962), 65 episodes of The Continuing Adventures of Popeye (1978-1981) and 161 animated shorts and 26 Popeye & Son shorts (1987). The first Popeye DVD release is expected be available at retail in 2007.  The theatrical library consists of 120 black & white shorts (106 produced by Fleischer Studios, 14 produced by Famous Studios) and 111 Technicolor cartoons (3 produced by Fleischer Studios and 108 by Famous Studios).  Created by cartoonist Elzie Segar, Popeye first appeared in his Thimble Theater comic strip in 1929.

Archie is turning 65 this year and Archie Comic Publications, Inc. will celebrate with a number of media and promotional events.  In a cross-promotional campaign with Girls Life magazine, Archie Comic’s will reintroduce the Archie Comic Book character Katy Keene.  Readers will be invited to submit their own fashion designs for Katy, Betty and Veronica, the winning designs to be worn by the characters in a special Archie 65th Anniversary issue.  The Archie website (www.archiecomics.com) will feature new original content in honor of the anniversary year.  Brand Central LLC represents the licensing for Archie Comics.  The Archie characters first appeared in an Archie comic book published in 1941.

THQ Inc releases its Cars video game this week, based on the new Disney/Pixar film, for the PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS, and PSP systems for PC and Mac.  The video game is expected to be released for Xbox 360 and Wii this fall 2006.  The title will eventually be available worldwide in 18 languages, and in more than 40 countries including China, Thailand, Japan, Russia and Poland.  Cars opens nationwide this Friday, June 9.

Diamond Select Toys & Collectibles is closing a deal with the Hasbro Properties Group, the intellectual property development arm of Hasbro, Inc. to create resin statues and busts of characters from Hasbro’s Classic G1 Transformers and G.I. Joe: Real American Hero brands. The new line is slated to be unveiled in at the San Diego Comic Con. July 20-23.  The statues/busts are designed by sculptors at Art Asylum and Plan B.
