DreamWorks Animation and Paramount corral a full cast of celebrities for the upcoming feature Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, slated for release November 7, 2008. Those stars reprising their roles from the original Madagascar (2005) movie include Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, David Schwimmer, Jada Pinkett, Sacha Baron Cohen, Cedric The Entertainer and Andy Richter. Joining the Central Park Zoo pack for the sequel are Bernie Mac, Sherrie Shepherd, Alec Baldwin, Will.i.am (from The Black Eyed Peas). Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa is directed by Eric Darnell and Tom McGrath, who together wrote/directed Madagascar, and produced by Mireille Soria and Mark Swift. Will.i.am will serve as co-composer working alongside the venerable Hans Zimmer.

Toon Disney will launch Healthy Kids Nutri-Crew, a series of Public Service Announcements that encourage kids to make healthy food choices, will debut Monday, July 7, at 7p during its Jetix block. Featuring a mix of real kids with animated characters from the network’s series, the PSAs will roll out each Monday at 7p through August 4. Additionally, more information on healthy food will be available at www.jetix.tv/food4U .
The soundtrack to the new Disney Channel TV movie Camp Rock will make its world premiere on Radio Disney, Saturday, June 15 at 1p, during the channel’s Planet Premiere feature. The broadcast will include interviews with the stars of Camp Rock. Additionally, this Friday, June 6, Radio Disney will debut This Is Me, a duet from the movie featuring Demi Lovato and Joe Jonas. Disney Records officially releases the soundtrack in stores from Tuesday, June 17. Camp Rock bows on Disney Channel, Friday, June 20 at 8p, and will be simulcast on Radio Disney. The movie will also air on ABC on June 21 at 8p, on ABC Family on June 22, and then on Disney.com on June 23. The network will air the sing-along Camp Rock Rock-a-Long on June 28.
In Canada Family Channel will also be hosting all the Camp Rock multi-platform doings including the movie premiere on the network June 20, at 8p, followed by the full original movie being available on broadband from Monday, June 23 at 8p at www.family.ca . Beginning Tuesday, June 17, Family Channel’s SVOD player, Family OnDemand, will offer a sneak peek at the movie. We all know camp is a summer-long thing, so, Family Channel will premiere the Camp Rock Rock-Along version of the TV movie on Friday, July 4 at 7:30p.
Toei Animation teams with Oddcast to introduce Digimon speaking avatars through Voki, a speaking avatar platform developed by Oddcast, at http://apps.voki.com/digimon/digimonyourself . Through the new program Digimon fans can record and upload voice recordings to Digimon characters and then share them via e-cards, social networks and blogs. For these first four months Digimon avatars will be offered to users for free through Voki. To begin, 10 of the most popular Digimon characters are available for customization, including Agumon, Masaru, Gaomon, Thomas and Kudamon.
EA Mobile has released the original mobile game Kung Fu Panda on wireless carriers in North America. Based on the new DreamWorks Animation feature film of the same name, the Kung Fu Panda game will be available across Europe later this month. EA Mobile is a division of Electronic Arts Inc Casual Entertainment Label.
B*tween Productions Inc., parent company of the Beacon Street Girls (BSG), has released its 12the tween-targeted book. Titled Time’s Up, the new BSG book is released in partnership with Simon & Schuster’s Aladdin M!X tween imprint. B*tween Productions Inc. and Simon & Schuster will also release Katani’s Jamaican Holiday. The companies plan to re-release books 1-4 in the BSG series featuring a new look for the characters. There are 16 Beacon Street Girls books, 12 in the series and four Special Adventures.

I don’t want to scare you, but 2009 marks the 60th anniversary of Casper The Friendly Ghost. It’s true, and Classic Media is planning a big boo-haha, which includes the expansion of the licensing program for The Official Ambassador of Halloween that includes products in a range of categories. Additionally, the new CGI animated series, Casper Scare School, is currently in production with co-production partners Classic Media, MoonScoop SAS and DQ Entertainment, and slated to premiere in 2009. Casper mobile content is currently available via MobiTV, with the classic cartoons available on Babelgum, Joost and YouTube, while Classic Media and Genius Products release two volumes of Casper on DVD. Licensing plans include: Local Celebrity (junior apparel); Mad Engine (men/boys apparel); Briefly Stated (daywear/sleepwear); Madacey Entertainment (music CDs); and Compedia (CD-Rom games); and renewed deals with American Greetings (social expressions); MJC (men’s loungewear); Logotel (t-shirts); and Mello Smello (novelty items) among many others
Galleon Holdings will launch the Skunk Fu! merchandising line next week at the 2008 Licensing Show in NYC. Galleon has appointed The Sharpe Company as licensing agent for property in North America. The Skunk Fu! toy line, developed in-house by Galleon’s Croco Sourcing Worldwide, will debut in the US at this year’s Licensing Show. Additionally, Galleon is currently in talks with a DVD distribution partner for the US. A Cartoon Saloon, Cake Entertainment and Telegael co-production for TG4 (Ireland) and Super RTL (Germany), The Skunk Fu! (52×13) is aimed at K6-12. Galleon handles the licensing and merchandising rights around the world (excluding Germany).
Lionsgate and HIT Entertainment will release the new direct-to-DVD movie Thomas & Friends: The Great Discovery on September 9, 2008. The movie features Pierce Brosnan as the new narrator. The DVD movie includes five new original songs, a special behind-the-scenes featurette with Brosnan, and several game/activities. The episode will air on PBS stations just prior to its release on DVD. Additionally, Thomas & Friends: The Great Discovery will be included in KidToons national movie theater July, as well as promoted at Simon Malls, MyGym outlets and so on to support the DVD release.
Warner Bros. Animation names Sam Register as its new EVP/Creative Affairs. An animation industry veteran, Register will report to Warner Bros. Television President Peter Roth. In his new position, Register will oversee development and production of new animated programming and content for all distribution outlets, as well as working with Warner Premiere on the studio’s animated direct-to-DVD releases. Register joined Warner Bros. Animation in November as a producer with a multi-property development and production deal. Previously, he was an animation executive and, later, producer at Cartoon Network, and then served as Executive Producer on Transformers: Animated.
Jose Carbonell is named VP/Preschool & Parenting Brand Marketing, Nickelodeon/MTVN Kids and Family Group. Carbonell will oversee coordination of cross-business marketing efforts, on-air events, and consumer and trade advertising initiatives for preschool properties and show launches. He will also manage relationships with media buying and creative agencies to develop long-term branding positioning for current and future properties. Carbonell will report to Jennifer Goodman Linn, SVP/Brand Marketing. Prior to this Carbonell was Sr. Marketing Director for Hartz-Mountain.
