Cynopsis: Kids!

06/02/11

Good morning. It’s Thursday, June 2, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Rovio, the Finland-based game developer of the super popular Angry Birds franchise, has acquired Finnish animation studio Kombo.  The terms of the deal were not disclosed.  Upon the completion of the deal, Kombo will focus all of its production efforts on Rovio properties.  With the acquisition of Kombo, Rovio’s increased animation production capabilities will bolster its “long-term goal of creating a world class powerhouse in animated entertainment,” as the company continues its expansion in all areas of entertainment.  Rovio also says it continues to look for more talent in animated entertainment and application development.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Twilight Saga stars Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner will introduce the first footage from the new movie The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn  Party 1 during their appearance on the 2011 MTV Movie Awards ( www.movieawards.mtv.com ), which will be hosted by Jason Sudeikis and broadcast live on Sunday, June 5 at 9p from the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, CA.  Set for release on November 18, Breaking Dawn  Part 1 is directed by Bill Condon and based on the Breaking Dawn book by Stephenie Meyer.  Mark Burnett serves as Executive Producer for the 2011 MTV Movie Awards.  Audrey Morrissey is also Executive Producer, and Garret English Executive Producer and Exec. In Charge for MTV.  The sponsors for the awards this year are adidas, Chevrolet, Snickers Brand, Sprint, Starbucks Coffee Company, State Farm, Tack Bell and Twix.

Building on its dance-centric series Shake It Up, Disney Channel is set to launch a kid/tween talent competition, Make Your Mark: Ultimate Dance Off  ‘Shake It Up’ edition.  The winner will appear on an episode of Shake It Up.  Production on the second season of the series begins this month.  For fun and practice, kids can find step-by-step dance videos by the Shake It Up choreographer online ( www.disneychannel.com/dancestudio ), where new videos will be posted Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.  So, here’s how the Dance Off will work:

  • Beginning Friday, July 1 through Wednesday, August 3, kids/tweens 8-16 (who have consent of a parent) can go to DisneyChannel.com/MakeYourMark (
  • www.disneychannel.com/makeyourmark ) where they can create and submit a dance video (maximum 30 seconds), which can feature up to five dancers that shows off their dance talents (freestyle or choreographed).  Kids can also go online to “like” their favorite videos, the most popular of which will be featured weekly on TV and online.

  • Additionally, on Thursday, July 7, the network will host a five-city talent search for Make Your Mark: Ultimate Dance Off  ‘Shake It Up’ edition beginning in LA (7/7) and then heading to Chicago (7/9), San Francisco (7/16), Atlanta (7/23), and Detroit (7/30).
  • August will see six finalists announced on Disney Channel.  The finalists will go head to head in front of a group of celebrity judges on the Make Your Mark: Ultimate Dance Off  ‘Shake It Up’ edition, which will air on Disney Channel in October 2011.  The judges will select 3 contestants and then viewers will be able to vote on their favorites.

In other Shake It Up news, the new music video, Watch Me, by series stars Bella Thorne and Zendaya will premiere on Disney Channel on Friday, June 17.  Disney Records will release the digital single on Tuesday, June 21 on iTunes, Amazon, and other online retailers.  Additionally, The Shake It Up: Break It Down CD and DVD Combo Pack, which includes Watch Me and five instructional dance videos, and the Shake It Up: Break It Down soundtrack will be available from Tuesday, July 12.

CBeebies will launch the fifth season of Nina and the Neurons in the US Hispanic market, Monday, June 6 as part of the Tiempo de Descubrir (Discovery Time) block on CBeebies.  The preschool series revolves around Nina, a playful neuroscientist, who recruits the neurons in her brain to help with simple experiments to answer kids science questions about their bodies and how their five senses can help them explore their world.  The BBC’s CBeebies channel broadcasts in Spanish and is available in the US on Channel 848 as part of DISH Networks’ DishLatino package.

HIT Entertainment and interactive developer Callaway Digital Arts launch the new Thomas & Friends: Hero of the Rails app for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch.  Based on the animated feature-length Thomas movie Hero of the Rails, the new kid aimed adventure app invites kids to read, watch, and play with Thomas, Hiro and their pals, featuring multi-touch animation, CGI video, painting, puzzles and games.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Skechers USA, a footwear company, inks a license deal with Street Flyers to produce sporting goods and safety gear products for kids and young adults.  The deal will see Street Flyers design, produce and distribute Skechers-branded bikes, skateboards, scooters, skates and safety gear, which will launch at toy and mass market retailers across the US and Canada in spring 2012.  The new kid-targeted product lines will feature designs and images from Skechers’ Zevo-3 animated TV series and Skechers Kids characters, each character of the latter represents a specific Skechers Kids footwear collection (e.g. Twinkle Toes, Sporty Shorty, HyDee HyTop, Punkie Rose, etc.).  Prior to this Skechers has teamed with a number of licensees to produce a range of products including kid’s apparel, bags, sunglasses, legwear, medical scrubs and leather accessories, with other deals currently in the works and the company continuing its search for new partners.

Every Baby Company, creators of the infant/toddler-targeted eebee’s adventures series, enters into its first international partnership with distributor Essential Minds (EM).  Under the deal EM will distribute eebee’s adventures products across Spain and Portugal.

American Greetings Properties (AGP) and licensing agent Starbright renew the Care Bears apparel deal in Italy with Fix Design.  The new deal will see Fix Design expand its offerings in spring/summer 2011 and fall/winter 2011/2012, which will include shirts, polos, hoodies, sweatshirts, shorts, sport jackets, belts, fashion bags, rucksacks, backpacks, cases, and pants.  Fix Design introduced its original Care Bears collection in spring 2010, as part of its Mini Fix line.
