Good morning. It’s Thursday, June 24, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Horrid Henry heads to the big screen.  Vertigo Films (Street Dance 3D) and Novel Entertainment unveil co-production plans for a new 3D live-action movie based on Novel’s kid-targeted property Horrid Henry.  Director/editor Nick Moore (Wild Child, Morning Glory, The Full Monty, Nanny McPhee) will helm the movie from a screenplay by Lucinda Whiteley, also a co-producer on the project for Novel.  Set to begin production this fall for a UK release in 2011, the producers have begun casting and are looking for young actors/actresses to play all of the major and supporting rules.  Vertigo Films will produce the live action movie with the 3D team Paradise FX Europe, and will also distribute the movie in the UK. Protagonist Pictures handling international sales.  Horrid Henry ( www.horridhenry.me ) was created by author Francesca Simon, and is also the star of the eponymous popular animated TV series (104 episodes) that airs on CITV (UK), as well as being featured on the stage, radio, online and in computer games, and consumer products.

Teletubbies is also going to get the 3D feature film once over says Teletubbies creator and Ragdoll Productions founder Anne Wood, per Licensing.biz.  Wood is partnering with Teletubbies TV series writer Andrew Davenport for a preschool/family-targeted movie.  Wood revealed the Teletubbies movie plans while speaking at the British Toy & Hobby Association Industry Day this week.  Wood also offered information about several other series she is working on including: Dip Dap – a non-verbal short-form animated series (3 minutes) about a character that interactive with objects and situation drawn next to him is set to debut on CBeebies next year; The Adventures of Abney and Teal  created with illustrator Joel Stewart for air in 2011, the series revolves around a group of six characters living on an island located in a lake, which is in the center of a city; and finally an untitled live-action scary series for kids that will debut in 2012-2013.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Fox‘s feature film adaptation of Richard and Florence Atwater’s classic kid’s book Mr. Popper’s Penguins may have found a director in Mark Waters (Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, Freaky Friday, Mean Girls), per Variety.  At one point Ben Stiller and director Noah Baumbach considered the project  but are not currently involved with the movie.  Actors potentially to be featured in the movie include Jim Carrey, Jack Black and Owen Wilson.

Fox 2000‘s Diary of a Wimpy Kid 2: Roderick Rules has found its director in David Bowers (Flushed Away, Astro Boy), per THR.  The sequel to the Diary of a Wimpy Kid (March 19, 2010), which was directed by Thor Freudenthal, Roderick Rules is set to film this summer in Vancouver and is slated for a March 2011 release.  Gabe Sachs and Jeff Judah team again to pen the script.  Returning for the sequel are Wimpy Kid stars Zachary Gordon, Steve Zahn and Rachael Harris.  The movies are based on author Jeff Kinney’s young adult Diary of a Wimpy Kid books.

MORE KIDS STUFF

The Association of National Advertisers (ANA) Alliance for Family Entertainment unveils a new programming sponsorship fund of $10 million to support the creation of family-centric entertainment content.  The ANA Alliance announced this new fund, the second, during its sixth symposium, The American Family: In Context.  At last year’s event the Alliance the group announced a script development partnership with Humanitas, which now has projects in development.  The new fund complements but is not directly associated with the Humanitas partnership, as it will include projects the networks are already developing.  The ANA Alliance, (f/k/a the Family Friendly Programming Forum), the group has played a role in bringing 20 family primetime programs to air, including Friday Night Lights, Chuck, Everybody Hates Chris, 8 Simple Rules and Gilmore Girls.

Imax Corporation and Disney ink a new deal to release three more 3D feature films in Imax theatres worldwide in 2011.  The new movie titles, which will all be re-mastered for Imax theatres, included under the deal are Mars Needs Moms (March 11, 2011), starring Seth Green and Joan Cusack, and executive produced by Robert Zemeckis; Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (May 20, 2011), starring Johnny Depp and Penelope Cruz, and Cars 2 (June 24, 2011).

MTV.com will stream the movie premiere of The Twilight Saga: Eclipse live from the red carpet tonight beginning at 9:30p at Movies.MTV.com ( www.movies.mtv.com ) from the Nokia Theater in LA.  The event will be hosted by MTV Movies managing editor Josh Horowitz and Kimmy West, she runs the Twilight fan website His Golden Eyes ( www.hisgoldeneyes.com ).

Indie distributor Echo Bridge Entertainment enters into a deal with the BBC‘s teen-targeted multiplatform BBC Switch, which acquires the free terrestrial broadcast rights for Degrassi: The Next Generation.  The series launched with season 8 in the UK and Ireland in April 2010 on BBC 2, and will be broadcast through its season finale in September 2010.  Season 9 will be available to broadcasters this year.

The new season of Jack Hanna’s Into the Wild will debut in syndication on September 20, 2010 as Jack and his family head to South Africa.  Litton Entertainment has sold the series in 96% of the US, with upgrades for he series in Houston, Phoenix, Raleigh Durham, Cincinnati and Jacksonville.  New stations signing on for the series include WABC-TV New York, WUSA-TV Washington, DC, WSB-TV Atlanta and WSVN-TV Miami. Groups include ABC O&Os, Belo, Capitol, Cox, Fox O&Os, Gray, Lin, Meredith, Newport, Raycom, Roberts, Scripps, Sinclair, Sunbeam, Tribune, Weigel and Young.

TBS will launch a promotion June 24-July 9 for Universal and Illumination Entertainment‘s upcoming 3D CGI feature film, Despicable Me, which opens nationwide on Friday, July 9, 2010.  The TBS movie studio promotion crafted by the network includes custom-animated movie characters developed to live in and interact with the TBS on-air branded environments, and sponsorships across some of the network’s comedy and spots during its comedy lineup (3p-7p), as well as behind-the-scenes segments within TBS hosted movie showcases.  The promotion begins today during the first of two sponsored episodes of TBS’s Movie Extra, during which the network will feature Despicable Me related content, including cast interviews.  The second Movie Extra episode will bow on Thursday, July 1.  TBS will also feature Despicable Me promotional content during its Movie & a Makeover on June 26, the tbs breakroom, which launches the week of June 28.  The weeks of June 28 and July 5 will see Despicable Me as the sponsor for The Office on Tuesdays (8-10p), and Neighbors from Hell on Mondays (10p) on TBS.  On July 1, the movie will serve as a sponsor of Lopez Tonight, during which the show will feature a sneak peek of the movie.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Discovery Channel and Science Channel appoint Marina Anglim as SVP/Marketing, and Deena Edwards as SVP/Integrated Content.  Both Anglim and Edwards will be based at Discovery Channel’s headquarters in Silver Spring, Maryland and will report to Wonya Lucas, EVP and COO/Discovery Channel and Science Channel. Most recently Anglim, who has held several positions at Discovery Communications, was SVP/Media Planning and Partnerships.  A 15-year veteran of Discovery Communications, Edwards has toiled across a variety of networks and departments for the company from ad sales to affiliate marketing to education.  Under her leadership, the Discovery Channel launched its efforts in integrated content to partner with advertisers to create effective and original content.  She also served as a part of the marketing team that launched Animal Planet in 1996.
