Yahoo was identified as the party that has approached Hulu about a possible acquisition, according to a follow up piece in the LA Times to a WSJ report late Tuesday, citing the proverbial “person with knowledge of the matter.” Speculation includes that a sale to a deep-pocketed buyer may provide needed capital to compete with Netflix for content rights after Hulu’s IPO plans were put on the back burner due to the start-up’s lack of long-term streaming rights. The subscription-based Hulu Plus service has also struggled to reach critical mass, but hopes to reach 1 million paying subs by year-end. Neither company has responded to the report.


BBC and SEGA announced a partnership to create a 4,000 square meter multilevel recreation space around the BBC EARTH brand that will fuse nature with technology. Several locations are being planned for the U.S. and Japan with openings to progress over the next two years.
Amazon acquired 47 titles from iconic mystery writer Ed McBain (aka Evan Hunter) to add to its new Thomas and Mercer Mystery imprint, to roll out in print, digital and audio formats beginning in the fall. Amazon also announced this week that Louisville mystery author John Locke became the first author without a major publisher to sell 1 million Kindle e-book copies on the platform. (Side note: most of Locke’s Donovan Creed novels sell for just 99 cents/each as an e-book, netting him just 35 cents/copy as Amazon takes a 70% royalty for books that sell at than $3.)


Location-based online and mobile service Loopt launched a new user-powered u-Deals platform in the SF Bay area, allowing consumers to suggest deals for local businesses. Users can create the actual offer and promote approved deals to friend and contacts on Twitter, Facebook and other social networking platforms. Loopt is working with web-based group-buying platform ChompOn to process Loopt users’ u-Deal purchases. Virgin America approved the first San Francisco deal yesterday afternoon – $35 for a $100 Travel Voucher (for SFO routes).


In an another ambitious industry effort to ward off government intervention, WPP media parent company GroupM has developed new guidelines for safeguarding the privacy of consumers using mobile devices, designed to limit the amount of data collected and passed from mobile devices that can be used in marketing campaigns. The guidelines, which GroupM is urging its publishing partners to adopt, include:

  • urging mobile publishers to mask unique user identifiers (UUIDs) whenever possible and to clearly display privacy policies for consumer review
  • specifying that privacy policies should state what information, including location and UUID, is being captured, paired with other data and/or shared with third parties
  • requiring publishers to enable and provide notification of consumer opt-out

Video ad technology company Mixpo unveiled a solution that extends in-banner, dynamic video ads to tablet devices. Publishers will be able to use Mixpo’s web-based software to devise campaigns once to deploy across the web and iPad/Android tablets. (The technology automatically deploys the ads in HTML5 or Flash, depending on the device.)


Rovi Corp. is expanding its relationship with LG Electronics to provide further integration of its DivX technology, currently embedded in Blu-ray players, into a wider range of consumer electronics devices. The deal should ultimately see the DivX codec embedded in HDTVs, in-car players, set-top boxes, tablets and mobile phones.


Google‘s websites had more than a billion unique visitors in May across the globe, the first for a site, according to new comScore data. Google’s uniques have increased 8.4% in the past year while Microsoft has maintained the No. 2 position with 905 million unique global visitors in May – up an even sharper 15% y/y. Facebook’s visitor count surged by 30% to about 714 million visitors, maintaining a slight lead over Yahoo, which it first surpassed last summer. Yahoo maintained its hold as the top visited in site in the U.S. in May, however.

Although Apple was mum on plans for a new iPhone at its developer’s conference, a new faster model could be due out in Sept. that features the same A5 processor that powers the iPad 2, per Bloomberg. The new iPhone should also feature an 8 megapixel camera, up from the iPhone 4’s 5 megapixel version.
Outdoor Channel has come up with its own free iOS app featuring video clips, news, programming information and various social interactivity functions, enabling outdoor fans to upload photos with comments to their Outdoor Channel community page. The features video clips can also be streamed from the iPhone or iPad to a television using Apple’s new Airplay technology.
Samsung released a new suite of accessories for its Android Honeycomb-based Galaxy Tab tablet, including several docking solutions for viewing movies and TV shows. The Multi-Media Dock includes HDMI pass through, allowing users to connect their docked Galaxy Tab 10.1 to Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 10.1 HDMI Adapter (sold separately) to seamlessly transfer multimedia content to a home entertainment center.


Richard Gingras, CEO of Salon Media Group, is leaving the online news magazine to head up Google’s Global News Products, according to reports.
Digital media production group Digital Broadcasting Group (DBG) has hired away former Sony Pictures Entertainment VP/Marketing Joe Epstein to serve as Chief Marketing Officer. He will be based in DGB’s New York headquarters.
Mobile payments start-up Square has added former Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers to its board of directors. Lawrence previously served as President Obama’s Chief Economic Advisor.
Dining-themed app developer Urbanspoon has served up Aaron D. Shapiro to be the Head of Global Audience Monetization, overseeing global ad sales of and Urbanspoon Mobile on the iphone, ipad and Android. Aaron is based in Los Angeles and reports to Mani Dhillon, GM.


The suddenly crowded cloud-based music arena has got yet another competitor. BestBuy is quietly testing its own $3.99/mo cloud-based music service that allows customers to buy and upload tracks they already own to a digital locker that can be accessed on a smartphone and/or tablet. The client software, more than a bit clunky at first glance, interfaces with your PC or Mac-based iTunes program to transfer songs directly from your library. Like Spotify’s popular European app, a number of tracks can also be stored on your device to listen to when not connected to a network. The service currently supports iOS, Android and BlackBerry devices through their own respective mobile apps. With Google, Amazon and Apple each working on their own cloud-based music solutions, its hard to imagine Best Buy making much of an impact here without considerably improving the user interface for starts.
