Good Morning. It’s Thursday, June 22, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.
Univision bidding update: The Televisa-led consortium missed the deadline yesterday, reportedly due to Carlyle Group‘s leaving. Well, it seems two more players have left the group with yesterday bringing the news that Blackstone Group LP and Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. (KKR) have also backed out. On the other hand, it turns out that the Haim Saban-led rival bidding group did submit its bid just in time at close to $35.50 a share. Rumor has it that Televisa is now trying to find ways to submit a late bid for close to $36 a share with its remaining comrades, Venevision Investments LLC, Bain Capital LLC and Cascade Investment LLC, and possibly a few new partners. Univision CEO Jerrold Perenchio had originally hoped for a $40 s share bid. In reaction to emerging news, Univision’s stock fell by 4.4% to $33.84 yesterday, while the overall market rose by 104 points.
The Federal Communications Commission voted to begin its review of restrictions on media ownership rules, after an attempt two years ago to loosen those rules failed. This next re-write of ownership rules will affect how many media outlets a company can own in a single market. Media giants say that owning multiple radio stations, newspapers, cable systems and television stations in a single market helps them compete. The opposition says ramping up ownership concentration will hinder diverse voices in a community. FCC Chairman, Kevin J. Martin said the FCC will hold six hearings around the country and will do its own research to investigate changes in the media landscape and how the public gets the news. Both democratic FCC commissioners, Michael J. Copps and Jonathan S. Adelstein have voted against parts of the FCC’s decision to re-examine the media ownership rules. “If we make the wrong decision, our communities will suffer and our country will suffer,” said Michael Copps.

Greenlit for 2007, the Sundance Channel will introduce two new original series: Sin City Law is an eight episode documentary series set in Las Vegas about the rivalry between the pro-death penalty D.A. and an ex-prosecutor turned public defender; and the six episode program, Pleasure for Sale, a look at the moral, political and economic realities of prostitution by showing the inside of a brothel in Pahrump, NE. In addition, the Sundance Channel has acquired the Australian comedy series, The Nominees, a mockumentary about the public’s obsession with heroes and highly accomplished individuals. The five-episode series will have its U.S. debut on September 5 at 9p.
Discovery will launch a new series in November called Sensing Murder from Granada America and Zodiak Television World. The show follows various psychics as they work with local police to investigate unsolved murders, per Variety. The show already airs in Australia and New Zealand, and will air on Discovery as part of its new forensics lineup.
There’s a new sports channel launching next summer – The Big Ten Channel featuring football, basketball, soccer, wrestling, swimming & diving and volleyball from the Big 10 conference men and women’s teams. In association with Fox Cable Networks as a minority owner, The Big Ten is scheduled to debut in August 2007 and will available on cable and satellite as well as various mobile technologies. Additionally, the Big 10 signed an 10 year deal with ABC and ESPN sports to provide football, basketball (men’s and women’s) and volleyball. The deal calls for the Disney networks to carry up to 42 football games, and the ESPN networks to air approximately 60 men’s basketball games. Over the course of the 10 year deal, ESPN will also air about 100 women’s basketball games and volleyball games.
Following the success of Comedy Central’s Pamela Anderson Roast, the network will now have veteran TV actor William Shatner in the spotlight for The Comedy Central Roast of William Shatner on August 20 at 10p. After being in the hot seat for awhile, Shatner may cry “Beam me up, Scottie”!
Jewelry Television is acquiring Scripps’ Shop at Home network for $17 million. With the acquisition, Jewelry will also pick up the carriage deals and plans to continue operating Shop at Home during the overnight hours from 9p-7a, while Jewelry will air during the daytime hours. The deal does not include the five Shop at Home affiliates owned by Scripps, which Scripps plans to sell separately. Until that sale occurs, those stations will carry the combination of Jewelry and Shop at Home.
Navarre Corporation’s FUNimation Entertainment has launched FUNimation Channel on AsianMedia Group’s LA-based digital channel LA 18.3. The channel offers around-the-clock Japanese anime programming. OlympuSAT is the exclusive distributor of FUNimation channel.
Marketing movies via an integrated mobile advertising campaign just leaped into a new direction when go2, the U.S. mobile search, directory and movie guide provider, Cellfish Media LLC, the digital content, marketing and distribution company, and Paramount Pictures decided to team up to promote the new Jack Black film Nacho Libre. The integrated mobile marketing campaign will be delivered through the go2 Movies portal (www.go2.com). The content will direct consumers to their local theatres showing the film, provide links to Nacho Libre promotional content, and generally help the overall awareness of the flick.

The deal includes producing a half-hour show where Corey Feldman and his wife Susie Sprague-Feldman are leading a perfectly happy married life and long-time friend, Corey Haim moves in with them indefinitely.
