CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis: Kids!

06/01/06

Good morning. It’s Thursday, June 1, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

Still basking in the glow of X3’s hugely successful first weekend; Marvel Entertainment, Inc. has inked a new agreement with Avi Arad, Chairman/CEO and Chief Creative Officer for Marvel Studios, under which Arad will now independently produce films for Marvel under his own production company, Avi Arad Productions.  That said, Arad has resigned from all of his corporate positions, remaining however, as Creative Advisor for Marvel through the end of 2006.  Under his new relationship with Marvel, Arad will continue to produce Spider-Man 3, its sequels and Marvel’s self-financed movie productions including Hulk and Iron Man.  According to the terms of the agreement, some of which were laid out during a press conference yesterday Arad has a non-compete clause preventing him from being involved with other movies/projects involving Marvel-like superhero characters outside of the Marvel universe, or fantasy/sci-fi projects. Arad Productions has sealed a deal with MGA Entertainment for its live-action Bratz movie.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Filming has wrapped on the one-hour special That Summer Day, the kid-targeted fictional dramatic special based on the events of the bombings in London last July 7, 2005. Commissioned by BBC Children’s and produced by Hat Trick Productions That Summer Day takes a look at that morning and the weeks following from the point-of-view of six different kids and their experiences and how they deal with what happened and the new world in which they find themselves living.  The aim of the program is to address that various important issues that may still be lingering for many UK kids and let them know that they are not alone.  That Summer Day was written by Clive Bradley (Last Rights) and features real TV and radio news footage from July 7.  The special will air on CBBC, but the airdate is TBD.

Jetix Europe will launch Yin Yang Yo!, a new animated action/comedy series this fall 2006. This will be its fourth Disney co-production as part of the Jetix global programming alliance. As an original production for Jetix platforms worldwide, the series will join Jetix TV schedules across Europe, Middle East, Latin America and the U.S. as of September 2006. Jetix Europe holds all Pay TV rights for Europe and the Middle East, as well as TV distribution rights, home video and consumer product rights. Buena Vista International Television will manage television distribution and will launch with 26 half-hour episodes offered at Mipcom in October 2006. JCP (Jetix Consumer Products, Jetix Europe’s licensing division) is managing the home video, licensing and merchandising rights.  Geared for K6-11 and from the producers of Fairly Odd Parents, the series features twin rabbits Yin and Yang, who live in a world filled with magic, monsters, mythical creatures, an evil wizard cockroach named Carl and a grumpy old panda named Master Yo.

Ottawa based Boomstone Entertainment Inc. is currently in production on Little Melody (26 x 30 min, 2 x 11 min segments in each), a new kid’s animated series slated to be available for a fall 2007 release.  Targeted to K4-8, the series follows the music based adventures of Little Melody and Toot, her magic flute, and her Mrs. Quill, a bluebird who in addition to being Melody’s best friend also serves as the narrator (voiced by Margot Kidder).  Boomstone intends to produce an interactive website featuring ring-tunes, webisodes, podcasts and ‘mobisodes.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Disney Channel will offer up 12+ full-length episodes of its original series The Suite Life of Zack & Cody, That’s So Raven and Kim Possible as part of the launch tomorrow of its broadband player on DisneyChannel.com.  The site will also host two unaired The Suite Life episodes at 2p (TV premiere following at 630p) and at 7p for the whole week (exclusively online) according to Variety.  In addition, Jetix will stream full episodes of Power Rangers: Mystic Force, Super Robot Monkey Team Hyperforce Go!, Get Ed and W.I.T.C.H. on Jetix.tv.

Visual Entertainment (VE) signed a multi-year distribution agreement with VOY to distribute film and television programming for DVD release.  Initial releases are expected in major US retailers this summer. The first VOY DVD series released under the agreement will be VOY Baby, an infant line for Latinos and non-Latinos who want their children to learn Spanish. Additional volumes of the series will be released in the coming months.  The documentary Chivas: Si Se Puede (Yes You Can) will also be released in the summer.

Warner Home Video will release the animated movie Laura’s Star, based on the popular German picture book of the same name by Klaus Baumgart, on DVD in the US September 26, 2006.  The story revolves around Laura, a young girl who feels alone when her family moves to the big city from the country.  Laura’s Star is directed by Thilo Gruf Rothkirch and Piet de Rycker, the team behind the Little Polar Bear.  In addition to the movie the DVD includes a making of segment, Laura’s World Game collection, and behind the scenes segments with the talent, producer and director.
