~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

20th Century Fox Television made a cross-Atlantic agreement with U.K.-based commercial network and producer ITV. The deal allows both entities to share development ideas for production in each other’s countries. ITV has already started work on a British copy of the 1990s sitcom Dharma & Greg that was produced by 20th Century Fox Television and aired on ABC. So far, 20th Century has not picked up any new ideas from ITV for development. In addition, both will co-finance the Shared Development Group, a separate development fund to create new content which will be produced together or independently and offered up for international distribution.

MTV and Janet Jackson are developing a music competition series with 25/7 Productions, says Variety. The untitled project has begun casting and Janet would be mentor to singer and dancer hopefuls with the goal of finding the next Janet Jackson, Justin Timberlake or Usher. Many of the details of the show, such as the grand prize, are not yet worked out, although the show would likely be shot on various street locations rather than inside a studio.

TNT tapped Natalia Cigliuti for its new drama series Raising the Bar from producer Steven Bochco. Natalia will play public defender Roberta “Bobbi” Gilardi and joins cast members already in place including Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Gloria Reuben, Jane Kaczmarek, Teddy Sears, Melissa Sagemiller, Currie Graham, J. August Richards and Jonathan Scarfe. The series is set to debut this September.

FOX nodded its approval for a one-hour pilot project The Emancipation of Ernesto starring That ’70s Show actor Wilmer Valderrama, reported THR. The single-camera comedy from 20th Century Fox Television is about a naive guy (Wilmer) who journeys around Los Angeles trying to find his father. The script has been likened to the Steve Martin comedy The Jerk. If the pilot goes to series it will be first one-hour comedy series on FOX since Ally McBeal.

Matthew Perry and Peter Tolan are developing pilot project for Showtime called The End of Steve.  The project will star Perry as a talk show host who is a delight on air, and a bit of a horror when the cameras turn off.  The pilot will be produced by Sony Pictures TV, and Perry will take a creator/executive producer credit.

Casting Call: Lifetime Networks invites female filmmakers to submit their original short films at http://www.mylifetime.com/sweeps/ewfc/submit.php . Deadline for entries is July 8. The winning contestant will have their short shown on Lifetime Movie Networks and receive a cash prize of $5,000 plus the opportunity to attend networking events and festivals.

~ ELSEWHERE IN CYNOPSIS ~

Scripps Networks. Five Engaging Brands, Each with a Passionate Audience.

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY: Perhaps Microsoft really is over the Yahoo acquisition. Microsoft acquired ad targeting start-up Navic Networks for an undisclosed amount, with an eye toward extending its internet ad platform to television. Navic works with cable companies to provide targeted, addressable ads to about 35 million digital set-tops in North America via its nascent Admira ad network. Combining online, mobile, game console and set-top box-based ad networks would allow Microsoft to place trackable ads across multiple platforms, presumably simplifying things greatly for ad agencies. The heavy lifting involved in integrating interactive campaigns across platforms is often named as the biggest fly in the ointment for the growth of digital brand marketing. Microsoft has been pursuing a television ad strategy since Google announced its EchoStar-integrated Google TV Ads partnership last year. Full edition: CYN DIGITAL.

CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY 4th Story Media and HarperCollins Publishers are partnering for The Amanda Project (T.A.P.), a multi-platform digital mystery series that will be written in part by its target audience of Girls 12-14.  4th Story Media, which owns all rights for the property, will produce the content for The Amanda Project with a creative team including web design agency Happy Cog.  HarperCollins Publishers, both a strategic partner in the venture and an investor, has acquired the rights to publish an eight-book The Amanda Project series worldwide.  The property revolves around Amanda Valentino a girl who arrives at her new high school mid-year and though she leaves abruptly y, she makes quite an impression on those around her.  In addition to the book series The Amanda Project will include a social website and a series of blogs that will chronicle the story, clues (old and new), users posts, downloadable music and merchandise.  The T.A.P. website in early 2009, and continue with the publication of the first book in fall 2009. Full edition: CYN KIDS.

CYNOPSIS INTERNATIONAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY: Stockholm’s Metronome Film & Television is launching an LA-based subsidiary in September with the first order of business to sell its existing formats. Original format development will be the next move.  Metronome has named Michael Porseryd as the new unit’s MD in addition to bringing in Jock Millgardh and Mattias Olsson from Friday TV to the LA office.  (Friday TV previously sold two formats in the U.S.: Clash of the Choirs to NBC and Single Moms to TLC.)  Full edition: CYN INTERNATIONAL.
