Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Thursday, June 19, 2008, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

4th Story Media and HarperCollins Publishers are partnering for The Amanda Project (T.A.P.), a multi-platform digital mystery series that will be written in part by its target audience of Girls 12-14.  4th Story Media, which owns all rights for the property, will produce the content for The Amanda Project with a creative team including web design agency Happy Cog.  HarperCollins Publishers, both a strategic partner in the venture and an investor, has acquired the rights to publish an eight-book The Amanda Project series worldwide.  The property revolves around Amanda Valentino a girl who arrives at her new high school mid-year and though she leaves abruptly y, she makes quite an impression on those around her.  In addition to the book series The Amanda Project will include a social website and a series of blogs that will chronicle the story, clues (old and new), users posts, downloadable music and merchandise.  The T.A.P. website in early 2009, and continue with the publication of the first book in fall 2009.

MORE KIDS STUFF

The N launches two new hour-long reality shows on July 11, beginning by attempting to adjust some attitudes and behavior on Queen Bees (8×60) at 9p, followed by Student Body (8×60) at 10p, which features kids from teens and their community on a mission to get in shape.  The premiere episodes of both shows will be simulcast on Nick at Nite.

  • Queen Bees features 7 young women (all between 18-20) who were nominated to take part in the show by someone in their lives that thinks they are over the top self-centered, narcissistic ‘mean girls’ that need a reality check.  With cameras watching, the seven must live together and participate in challenges to see if they can change for the better.  Produced by Endemol USA, the series is hosted by Yoanna House, America’s Next Top Model winner, with guidance from relationship expert Dr. Michelle (The Tyra Banks Show).  Queen Bees will air regularly Fridays at 8:30p.
  • The N’s Student Body heads to Decatur, IL to bring together a dozen teens from rival high schools and challenge them to get in shape, both mentally and physically.  The series is hosted by athlete/author Laila Ali, and is executive produced by The N along with Reveille’s Mark Koops, Dave Broome of 25/7 Productions and Ben Silverman, founder of Reveille and currently Co-Chairman of NBC Entertainment and Universal Media Studios.  Student Body will air regularly Sundays at 8p, beginning July 13 on The N.

Pineapple Squared Productions signs its first TV sales for its multi-platform 3D-animated series Orsum Island, with TV2 (Norway0 and RTE (Ireland) picking up the series.  Orsum Island’s distributor VGI Entertainment completed the deals.  Targeted to Boys 6-12, Orsum Island follows the adventures of Kodi, a boy shipwrecked on an island and finds himself drawn into a battle of good versus evil and is befriended by the last dragon on the island, a female martial artist, and a chameleon.  Orsum Island was created by the late David Mitton (Thomas the Tank Engine).

Studio100 Media (f/k/a EM.Entertainment) completes an exclusive multi-year distribution pact with Al Jazeera Children’s Channel for the mixed live-action/CGI animated preschool series Bumba the Clown (150×5).  Under the 5-year deal, Bumba will be available on free and pay TV on cable, satellite and terrestrial services in a range of Arabic speaking regions around the world.

Wazoo Sports, which broadcasts high school sporting events on the internet, has received a $2.0 million in equity funding from Meritus Ventures, L.P., a Kentucky based venture capital fund.  The Wazoo network, which broadcast 88 high school basketball games live on the web during this school year, plans to use the new investment to “aggressively expand” its efforts to include various national high school sports opportunities.

Scholastic Storybook Treasures celebrates the 40th anniversary of author Don Freeman’s classic storybook Corduroy, with the release of a new DVD Corduroy … And More Stories About Caring on July 29.  In addition to Corduroy, Weston Woods Studios’ mixed live-action/animated version of the story, the DVD features six other stories, some of which are narrated by celebrities including: I Love You Like Crazy Cakes, based on the story by Rose Lewis and narrated by Mia Farrow; Goose, based on the story by Molly Bang, narrated by Laura Dern; and Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel, based on Virginia Lee Burton’s story and narrated by David De Vries.

Worth noting here is that Viking Juvenile recently published a 40th anniversary edition of the Corduroy books that includes several pages of previously un-published content, including sketches, an early draft of the manuscript and letters between Freeman and his publisher.

Also celebrating a milestone birthday is Barney, the big purple one.  To mark Barney’s 20th year Lionsgate and HIT Entertainment will release the Best of Barney DVD on September 9.  The DVD features a very young Demi Lovato (Camp Rock) and Selena Gomez (Wizards of Waverly Place), who both appeared as cast members on Barney & Friends.  Barney’s 20th anniversary celebration continues with Best of Barney Month on PBS Kids in October, when twenty favorite episodes of Barney & Friends.  Additionally, this fall Play Along will release its new Sing and Celebrate Barney musical toy.

MARKETING/LICENSING

VIZ Media and Konami Digital Entertainment (KDE) ink a licensing deal under which KDE will serve as the exclusive manufacturer/distributor of the Blue Dragon trading card game and related accessories in North America.  VIZ Media is the master North American licensor for the TV, home video and non-video game merchandising rights for Blue Dragon.  The Blue Dragon TV series and forthcoming trading card game are based on the Xbox 360 videogame Blue Dragon, which was developed by Hironobu Sakaguchi (creator, Final Fantasy), and features character designs by Akira Toriyama (creator, Dragon Ball manga).  Produced by studio Pierrot, the Blue Dragon animated TV series currently airs in the US on Saturday mornings on Cartoon Network.

The Wumblers website, www.wumblers.com , has been added to Kidzui, the new subscription-based web browser targeted specifically to K3-12.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Jetix Europe appoints Lee Hobbs as the new Director/Press and PR.  Lee, who will continue to report to Paul Taylor, CEO, is now responsible for heading and coordinating the company’s corporate PR strategy across Europe and the Middle East, for programming, consumer products, ad sales and online, as well as overseeing pan-European consumer and brand PR campaigns.
