06/16/11
Good morning, it’s Thursday, June 16, 2011, and this is your first early morning digital briefing. If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis edition online, click here.
Cable executives addressed the thorny issue of compensating programmers for adding access to cable programs on multiple devices in yesterday’s Cable Show opening general session – a trend that’s being increasingly seen as necessary in order to follow consumer demand and maintain relevance in the marketplace. Scripps Networks Interactive CEO Ken Lowe admitted that programmers will most likely have to rely more on ad revenue from mobile and over-the-top devices, rather than trying to continue to pass additional costs onto the consumer. Jeff Bewkes, Time Warner CEO, and Chase Carey, COO of News Corp. both called attention to the importance of improving cable’s user interfaces in a panel on Tuesday, but reminded the audience that agreements have to be carefully structured to preserve current business models.
SpikeTV and GameTrailers.com‘s live and streaming coverage of the E3 gaming convention is being dubbed as the biggest live streaming event in Viacom history as over 10 million combined online and on-air viewers tuned in from June 2-9. Spike TV’s on-air programming was seen by more than 4.4 million people, including 3.1 million men, while GameTrailers.com garnered more than 11 million visits and 5.7 million unique visitors throughout the week of the convention. GameTrailers.com had over 20.6 million total video streams of coverage, both live and on-demand, and posted over 900 videos during the week of E3.
BravoTV.com is teaming with Cars.com to launch a new competition-based web series to complement season 2 of Bravo’s “Work of Art: The Next Great Artist.” Contestants will compete in each of the 8 webisodes to create the “Best of The Year” trophy for Cars.com, vying for a $10,000 prize.
While failing to match the hoopla generated by LinkedIn’s debut, Pandora‘s IPO went well on an otherwise negative day on Wall Street as the company’s shares closed at $17.42, a gain of 8.9% over its upwardly revised initial price of $16/share. The shares had surged as high as $26 in early trading.
Groupon is rolling out a new feature on its mobile app that offers customers location-based deals that are good for just a few hours and must be redeemed the same day. The listings are available under the Groupon Now heading of the newly revised apps in select cities.
Information management specialist Management Science Associates, Inc. (MSA) and cable industry iTV venture Canoe Ventures have announced that MSA’s broadcast and cable media software will now support the sale of Canoe’s interactive iTV solutions.
Data and analytics provider Experian Marketing Services and online, TV and radio measurement firm Kantar Media are joining to integrate aggregated demographic data with anonymous audience viewing behavior data. The integration will be offered as a core feature for Kantar’s DirecTVView service measuring behavior data across 100k DirecTV set-tops.
Charlie Ergen’s Dish Network Corp is going after bankrupt TerreStar Networks, bidding $1.375 billion in cash to buy the telecommunications company’s assets, which include valuable mobile spectrum.
Jack Ma defended the Alibaba Group‘s decision to divest of its online payment unit Alipay this week, a move conducted without informing the company’s two principle shareholders – Yahoo and Japan’s Softbank Corp. Yahoo and Alibaba Group appear to have developed the outlines of an agreement that would resolve the Alipay dispute, but it would require a sign-off from Softbank, per the WSJ. The ownership of Alipay, China’s top online payment service, has been transferred to a company controlled by Ma, following two transactions in 2009 and 2010.
More than three-quarters (77%) of Americans have now watched a full-length TV show online but less than one-third (30%) of them say they are ready to cut the cord and live off the internet for their entertainment, according to a new Adweek/Harris Poll that surveyed 2,309 online adults late last month. Almost nine in ten Americans currently have cable TV (87%) but a majority would stop paying for it in favor of watching TV shows online if certain conditions were met (56%):
- Two in five say they would stop paying for cable TV in favor of watching TV shows on the internet if they could get all of the programs that they wanted to watch for free online
- A quarter of adults say that they would need to get all the shows they wanted to watch online at the same time that they air on TV (25%)
- 16% would do so if they could get all the programs they wanted to watch for a small fee online and the same number say they would do so if it was less complicated to set their TV up with internet
Other findings included:
- Half of U.S. adults say they have watched a show on the internet that they never previously saw on a traditional television (51%)
- Younger adults 18-34 are more likely (88%) to have watched a TV show online than older demos: 84% of 35-44 year olds, 75% of 45-54 year olds and 64% of 55+ year olds
- Men and women are equally likely to have watched a TV show on the internet
A new Rice University study of how businesses fare when entering into agreements with daily deals sites found that between August ’09 and March ’11, 55.5% of businesses reported making money, 26.6% lost money and 17.9% broke even on their promotions. (A goodly few have gone on record in the press claiming it was the worst business decision they’ve every made.) The study found that some 80% of deal users were new customers, but that significantly fewer users spent beyond the deal’s value (35.9%) or returned to the venue the purchase an item at full price (19.9%. Red Flags the industry should be aware of include:
- less than half of the businesses indicated enthusiasm about running another daily deal in the future
- fully 72.8% indicated openness to considering a different daily deal site
- only 35.9% of restaurants/ bars and 41.5% of salons and spas that had run a daily deal asserted they would run another such promotion in the future
T-Mobile USA unveiled an Android app that aggregates daily deals by location from a variety of sources, including Living Social. The “More for Me” app will feature deals on meals, health and beauty services, clothing, concert tickets, cooking classes and outdoor activities, and is available for any handset running Android.
Music Choice has launched its first iPad app, designed with Harmonic Inc. and Manzanita Systems. Authenticated customers will have access to 45 channels of music across multiple genres.
Nintendo announced this week that the new 3DS has finally sold a million units in Japan, more than 13 weeks after its release. (It only took the original DS model about 4 weeks to sell a million.) However, game developers such as Electronic Arts are beginning to respond to the device’s new location-based “StreetPass” social networking capabilities, per the WSJ. EA plans to add the ability to look at and download avatars of passer-by’s pets in its upcoming “The Sims 3 Pets” edition for the 3DS.
Oberon Media announced it is bringing a version of Tetris to the Samsung Apps platform, the first of several HDTV-based app stores.
CBS Interactive tapped former Starz digital executive Marc DeBevoise as SVP and GM of its Entertainment division. Marc is responsible for overseeing CBS.com, TV.com and Clicker.com, as well as digital content distribution strategies and the development of both original and show-based digital content, applications and games.
Former White House press secretary (under Bill Clinton) Joe Lockhart will join Facebook next month as VP/Global Communications. He will manage corporate, policy and international communications, reporting to Elliot Schrage, VP,Global Communications, Marketing and Public Policy.
LA-based digital marketing firm MediaTrust has named Art Welch as the company’s Chief Technology Officer. Art comes from Rocket Power Media, which he co-founded and served as CTO of.

Call it the Twitter effect. (Or the Cynopsis effect – readers on digital platforms like their information short and sweet.) Location-based check-in app Loopt is continuing to add its Questions feature to select cities, beginning with the SF Bay area last month and adding Chicago this week so all the cable execs in town can check it out. The “Q” feature allows users to enter and view bite-sized reviews of places they visit, rather than long, rambling tomes often found on Yelp. iPhone Loopt users are rewarded with points that will help them “level up” when leaving Qs.
