A Squared Elxsi Entertainment (A2E2), a joint venture between A Squared Entertainment and Tata Elxsi, unveils its new preschool CG animated series Rainbow Valley Heroes (26×11). Rainbow Valley Heroes follows the adventures of a fleet of police and fire rescue trucks. Fire Chief Rusty and Pam the Paramedic join forces with friends Lieutenant Lonnie and Major Mia from the police station to lead their teams of fun loving rescue vehicles on their missions, underlining the value of friendship, sharing, and working hard at school while also educating preschoolers on subjects such as recycling, telling the time and problem solving. Created by Daniel E. Taylor, the series will be represented worldwide by A2E2, including licensing and new entertainment. The company intends to create new episodes, as well as new toys, digital and entertainment products, games, apparel, books and additional branded merchandise.

Hola Moshi Monsters. Spanish speaking fans of Moshi Monsters now have a new Spanish version of the K6-12-targeted virtual world at www.moshimonsters.es. The new Spanish language Moshi Monsters site is supported by a native Spanish-speaking staff who will be able to get the various cultural references and respond in a timely way, while also providing proper player support. Moshi Monsters launched in English in 2008, and now boasts 60+ million registered users across 150 territories.

LICENSING

Saban Brands is set to reintroduce the Popples franchise. The company will work with partners to introduce a wide range of merchandise, including apparel, accessories, mobile and tablet apps, plush and more in fall 2013. In spring 2014, Saban Brands plans to introduce new Popples characters and expand merchandise to include publishing, stationery, party goods, crafting and more. Based on the Popples characters from the 1980s Saturday morning TV series and toy line, the new Popples products will offer a modern twist with a clear link to the original Popples. The original Popples plush toy transformed from fluff balls into furry pals and pack again.

Turner CN Enterprises (TCNE) appoints Planeta Junior Hellas and Partner Plus as its licensing agents in Greece and Cyprus. Under the agreements Planeta Junior Hellas will be responsible for licensing TCNE’s portfolio of boys, comedy and teen and adult brands throughout the region, while Partner Plus will manage the license for the company’s girls and pre-school properties.

  • Planeta Junior Hellas will handle licensing rights throughout Greece and Cyprus for brands including the boys action properties Ben 10, Redakai and Bakugan, comedies such as The Amazing World of Gumball and Adventure Time, as well as TCNE’s older-skewed brands including Dexter’s Laboratory, Johnny Bravo and Captain Planet from the Cartoon Network Originals.
  • Partner Plus, which was key in launching licensing programs for brands including the preschool series Peppa Pig and Australian fashion brand Kimmidoll and Kimmidoll Junior in Greece and Cyprus, will now also oversee licensing for TCNE’s preschool and girls brands in the region. LazyTown, Bananas in Pyjamas and Ha Ha Hairies and Jelly Jamm will be represented by Partner Plus in addition to Spin Master’s girls collectible Zoobles.

Warner Bros. Consumer Products (WBCP) extends its long-term (12-year) partnership with The Character Group that will see the toy company launch Scooby-Doo construction toys under its Character Building brand across EMEA and North America. The deal includes rights to Scooby-Doo themed brick-based construction vehicles, buildings and collectible figures.

Warner Bros. Consumer Products EMEA (WBCP) appoints Shooting Stars as its licensing representative in the Middle East. Under the deal, Shooting Stars will be responsible for licensing WBCP’s classic brands, films and new theatrical releases in connection with merchandise in Saudi Arabia (KSA), United Arab Emirates (UAE), Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, Lebanon, Jordan, Bahrain, Yemen and Iraq. Shooting Stars will work with WBCP brands including Looney Tunes, Tom and Jerry and Scooby-Doo, all DC Comics Super Heroes (including Batman and Superman), as well as theatrical releases such as the upcoming Man of Steel and Peter Jackson’s two films based on The Hobbit, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: There and Back Again, productions of New Line Cinema and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM).

Nickelodeon & Viacom Consumer Products (NVCP) inks an international, multi-category and multi-property wholesale deal with Ontario-based Summit Resources International (SRI), which is a division of Entertainment Retail Enterprises, with a focus on the Latin American and Asian markets. Under the deal, SRI will create wholesale strategies across multiple categories for NVCP’s kid and adult brands focusing on top tier product development and increasing presence at retail through customized brand solutions. SRI will work in direct partnership with NVCP consumer product operations in Latin America and Asia on new product collections for retail. The non-exclusive, multi-year agreement covers all NVCP brands including Nickelodeon and MTV, and related properties such as SpongeBob SquarePants and Dora the Explorer.

FremantleMedia Enterprises (FME) inks a deal with European toy company Giochi Preziosi for the Master Toy rights of Tree Fu Tom. The new deal will see Giochi Preziosi manufacture and distribute a range of Tree Fu Tom toys, including action figures, playsets, role play items and vehicles, both in the UK and across Europe and will give the toy company the exclusive right to manufacture the Licensed Products for sale anywhere In Europe, the Middle East and Africa

On the heels of the launch of the third season of the preschool series Chuggington in the US on Disney Junior (block and channel), series creators Ludorum, creators have unveiled Traintastic Adventures!, a multi-platform campaign focusing on Chuggington’s collection of characters, destinations and adventures, this week at Licensing International Expo. The Traintastic Adventures! campaign features Chuggington’s adventures, characters and destinations throughout Chuggington products, promotions, and at retail. Anchor Bay Entertainment will kick off the program with the release of its newest Chuggington DVD, Traintastic Adventures!, on August 14, and in the same month, Budge Studios will launch a Traintastic Adventures! full feature game app, bringing the adventures of Chuggington to iOS and Android devices. In October 2012, families can visit their local movie theater to watch Chuggington Traintastic Adventures! episodes on the big screen as part of the Kidtoons movie theatre matinee program nationwide. Additionally, Ludorum will introduce the first Chuggington Traintastic Adventures! collector cards and map. The collector cards and map will be free to consumers with the purchase of select Tomy or Anchor Bay Entertainment Chuggington product beginning in August, as well as a gift with purchase through Scholastic Book Clubs. At retail, Ludorum continues its partnership with Totsy.com, the mom-targeted flash sale website, which in October, will launch a Traintastic Adventures! online feature shop, where parents can purchase new Chuggington merchandise and receive free collector cards and a map with purchase. Finally, to build consumer awareness for Traintastic Adventures!, Ludorum will also launch a Traintastic Family Adventure Sweepstakes in August in partnership with Delta Vacations.

Big Idea Entertainment grows the licensing program for its VeggieTales brand as they head into its 20th anniversary, which will officially kick-off in December 2013. Big Idea recently signed deals with new licensing partners across key categories including book apps from Rukus Media Group, and educational and game apps from Weeblets (Spotisode), Moveable Code (Step By Story), ReelCards (video eGreetings), Thruster, a division of Bottle Rocket (game apps), ScollMotion (Book apps) and GreetLink (phone and email greetings), novelty format books from Ideals Publications and customized stickers from StickerYou. The new VeggieTales program will debut at retail this fall 2012, and will continue with the brand’s 20th Anniversary in 2013. Open categories for 2012-2013 include Food and Beverages, Health and Beauty, Apparel, School Supplies, Party Supplies, Electronics and Game and Book Apps.

The Collective teams with licensing partner Sakar International for a line of electronic produces and accessories based on Annoying Orange, the web series and new Cartoon Network series.  The deal was brokered for The Collective by The Joester Loria Group, which serves as the licensing agent for the Annoying Orange Brand. Sakar will create a collection of Annoying Orange electronic products including earbuds, headphones, talking camera cases, clock radios, and cases for iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch. Items will debut at Toys “R” Us and other retailers nationwide in time for holiday 2012.

Zodiak Rights signs three new licensing deals for Simon’s Cat: Sharples & Grant is developing pet products (bowls, collars, beds, feeding mats, cat scratchers) for launch in October 2012; Offshore International will launch Simon’s Cat mobile, iPad, laptop, Kindle, MP3 player and gaming device skins and hard cases on their e-commerce website www.xskins.co from July – with other digital device cases including iPad leather cases slated for later in the year; and Bravado is developing t-shirts (women and men) that will launch in late summer 2012.

MARKETING

Marvel’s Avengers and its other characters are assembling on Club Penguin Island (www.clubpenguin.com/marvel) for Marvel Super Hero Takeover, an online event beginning today, June 14 and running through July 3, 2012. When a meteor hits the island of Club Penguin, it powers up the dangerous Destructobot. Players can choose to suit up as one of 14 Marvel Super Heroes or Super-Villains, including Avengers characters such as Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk, and Thor, as well as the Super-Villain Loki. As part of The Marvel Super Hero Takeover event, players can also do a number of things including: explore the island, which has been transformed to include new destinations such as a bank, jail, and a superhero headquarters; join teams to decide whether to defend or defeat the evil Destructobot; meet Aunt Arctic, the news reporter and editor-in-chief for the Penguin Times, the Club Penguin Island newspaper – who’ll be keeping an eye on the battle of Super Heroes and Super-Villains around the island

MORE KIDS STUFF

Disney XD celebrates Father’s Day here in the US this Sunday, June 17 with Marvel Universe‘s Ultimate Spider-Man marathon 11a-2p. The special programming event will feature a new episode with Wolverine (11a) and a special edition segment of Master Class. Hosted by Radio Disney’s Morgan Tompkins, each Master Class segment, showcasing Marvel Entertainment’s Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada teaching his daughter and viewers how to draw mini versions of Spider-Man, Captain America, Hulk, Iron Man and Wolverine, while also offering up some unique facts, will debut throughout the Ultimate Spider-Man marathon.

FremantleMedia Enterprises (FME) finalizes new sales for Tree Fu Tom, the interactive preschool TV series, to broadcasters including with Switchover for Media K2 and Frisbee (Italy), NRK (Norway), YLE (Finland), Knowledge Network (British Columbia), BBC Kids (Canada), and VRT for Ketnet (Belgium). Tree Fu Tom made launched this year on CBeebies (UK). Featuring animation by Blue Zoo Animation, Tree Fu Tom is a British co-production between FME and the BBC for CBeebies.

Zodiak Kids enters into a deal with the UK’s Channel 5‘s milkshake! for its new CGI animated preschool series Tickety Toc (52×11), which is produced by The Foundation, part of Zodiak Kids, and Korea-based FunnyFlux Entertainment. Channel 5’s milkshake! will launch Tickety Toc in fall 2012 during the morning preschool block. Zodiak Kids has also secured deals with several other broadcasters internationally including: France 5 (France); Disney Junior (Canada); TG4 (Gaelic-language terrestrial channel in Ireland) and Pop TV (Slovenia). Zodiak Kids holds the worldwide rights for Tickety Toc, excluding Korea and Japan.

Peppa Pig set to air on Disney Junior in Spain and Italy in 2012. Entertainment One Family‘s (eOne Family) animated preschools series can already be seen in both Spain and Italy on free to air channels RTVE and RAI respectively.

Toon Goggles (www.toongoggles.com), an online kids channel, enters into a partnership with Panasonic to debut the Toon Goggles app. The Toon Goggles app is specifically designed for Panasonic’s Viera Connect-enabled HDTVs will be available in the US and Canada this summer and will also be rolled out in other regions. The app offers viewers instant access to Toon Goggles’ library of 1200+ hours of kid-aimed and parent friendly programming. Toon Goggles’ iOS app is also available for download in the iTunes App Store.

Bento Box Interactive launches the Sweet Pickles (www.sweetpickles.com) book series for young readers in E-book format. The launch begins with the first four books in the 40 book series, Who Stole Alligator’s Shoe?, Very Worried Walrus (available for a limited time as a free download from the Apple iBookstore), Scaredy Bear, and Fixed by Camel. By this summer, Bento Box will make all 40 books in the series available in E-book format. Created by author Jacquelyne Reinach, and author/illustrator by Richard Hefter and editor Ruth Lerner Perle, The Sweet Pickles book series debuted in 1978. Bento Box Interactive acquired the property in 2011, and plans to follow the E-book launch with Apps and other digital products based on the property.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

France Televisions makes two new appointments in its Child and Youth Division.

 

 

  • Tiphaine de Raguenel is named Head of Children and youth Activities for the Child and Youth Division. From September 1, 2012, she will oversee development of kids and youth programming for France Televisions. In her new position, de Raguenel will also act as an intermediary between the Digital Strategy Department and the Department of Diversification and Revenue of France Televisions. Reporting into her will be the Manger in charge of Children’s and Youth Programming, the children’s and Youth Acquisitions Manager and the Deputy Unit Director.
  • Pierre Siracusa is appointed as Head of Animation, Child and youth Division. In this position he is responsible for the creative development of animated properties for all France Televisions broadcasts. The Editorial Managers for preschool animation and young children, animation for K6-12 and family, and hybrid programs and new format programs will report to Siracusa.

RATINGS

Cartoon Network‘s premiere of its new series Annoying Orange on Tuesday, June 12 at 8:30p was the top telecast of the day with Boys 6-11, and tops in its time period among K2-11, K6-11 and Tweens 9-14, as well as all boy demos. The series debut also improved all kid and boy demos compared to the prior week and previous four weeks.
