Good morning, it’s Thursday, June 14, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.
The 2007-2008 Upfront selling bonanza has officially started. The first big deal, totaling somewhere between $800 million and $1 billion, was completed between NBC Universal and the media buying conglomerate Group M that consists of Mindshare, mediaedge:cia and Mediacom. One facet of the deal that has everyone talking is the basis of the currency. Apparently, NBCU and Group M agreed to use live plus three-days of commercial ratings data rather than program ratings, which was used last year for all upfront deals. The verdict is still out whether or not other networks will use Nielsen’s new commercial ratings data that includes live plus three-days of playback on DVRs, or continue using only program ratings data. This initial agreement is across all dayparts and includes many of NBCU’s properties: NBC, Telemundo, USA Network, Sci-Fi, Bravo plus digital and branded content and product integration. Group M leveraged this deal for many of its clients such as Unilever, Burger King, IBM, Sprint, Paramount, Cingular, Volkswagen, Audio, Warner Bros. and Nokia.
Speaking of upfronts, no pricing or CPMs were divulged on the NBC/Group M deal, though CPM increases of +10% to +12% have been rumored. Elsewhere, rumors suggests ABC wants +12% and FOX is asking for +14%. Last year, all the broadcast networks sold approximately $8.5 billion to $9 billion worth of upfront advertising time, while NBC reportedly booked $1.9 billion.
News Corp. will sell nine of its 35 stations, all Fox affiliates. None of the nine are in markets where Fox has a duopoly. News Corp. has retained is Allen & Company to handle any potential transactions. Stations on the block are: WJW / Cleveland, KDVR / Denver, KTVI / St. Louis, WDAF / Kansas City, WITI / Milwaukee, KSTU / Salt Lake City, WBRC / Birmingham, WHBQ / Memphis and WGHP / Greensboro.
One of golf’s biggest tournament tees off this morning – the U.S. Open with all the big guys in contention. NBC will start the tourney with a roadblock at 8am. Airing across all the NBC television broadcast and cable networks, its four websites and available on two mobile platforms, is the opening tee shot featuring last year’s US Open champion Geoff Ogilvy, the winner of the 2006 British Open Tiger Woods and the US Amateur Open champion Richie Ramsey. Thereafter, coverage resumes this afternoon on NBC (in HD) from 3-5pm, again on Friday 3-5pm, and this weekend from 1-7p both Saturday and Sunday. Additional live coverage (in the United States only) is available online at www.usopen.com beginning this morning and covering all 18 holes of the starting group – Woods, Ogilvy and Ramsey.
Lionsgate and Killer Films have inked a first-look pact to develop and produce content for broadcast and cable TV. Killer Films, with Christine Vachon at the helm, has produced such indie films as Far From Heaven, Boys Don’t Cry, One Hour Photo and the recent HBO television film Mrs. Harris.
For the fourth season of ABC’s Boston Legal, veteran actor John Larroquette will join the cast as a senior partner who relocates from the New York offices of Crane Poole & Schmidt to Boston. Also coming on board full time will be Christian Clemenson whose lawyer character Jerry “Hands” Espenson has Aspergers syndrome, in addition to new cast mate Tara Summers as a young associate. Production on the new season starts June 27. On the flip side, leaving the show are Julie Bowen, Mark Valley, Rene Auberjonois and Constance Zimmer.
Casting Call: This marketing campaign on behalf of a major advertiser, will feature a team of five technology gurus consisting of engineers, scientists and gadget makers who are passionate about their real-life work. The campaign will be shot like a reality TV show and air on local cable and online. Eligible participants should live in the Philadelphia or Pittsburgh area. Emails along with a brief bio, personal photos of the interested participant and a project they have worked on can be sent to [email protected] by June 25.
Casting Call: The Style Network series Married Away is seeking couples who are planning a destination wedding this summer between June 22 and September 1. A professional wedding coordinator from the show will assist with the details. The destination can be domestic or international. Your wedding can be featured during season two of the series and perhaps for up to five years on the network. Interested couple should contact Katie Griffin at (212) 763-3673 or via email [email protected] immediately.
Casting Call: Let your inner Ogre and Donkey break out at the open auditions for Shrek the upcoming Broadway musical. Featuring music by Jeanine Tesori, book and lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire and directed by Jason Moore, this call is specifically for rock singers and Hip-Hop performers to audition for the parts of Shrek and Donkey. Auditions in LA will be held on Wednesday, June 20, sign up will be from 10-11a at Screenland II, 10501 Burbank Blvd. Scheduled to open on Broadway in 2008, the Shrek musical is produced by DreamWorks Animation Live Theatrical Productions and Neal Street Productions, Ltd.
