Good morning. It’s Thursday, June 14, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.
Today marks the launch of MTV Networks International’s new youth-centric, worldwide, multi-platform initiative, MTV Switch, which designed to inform viewers about the issues of global warming and ways in which they can make choices that result in the reduction of carbon emissions. MTV Switch makes its initial launch on 55 local MTV channels across 162 countries with Public Service Announcements, in addition to other outlets such as UK Community Channel, as well as online and mobile efforts. Six different agencies, 180 LA, Cake, Lowe Worldwide, Ogilvy, Wieden + Kennedy 12, and Y&R, produced pro-bono TV ads (which are all available rights-free and cost-free to broadcasters and content distributors). Several MTV and Nickelodeon shows will also include related environmental info and/or energy conservation themes. Sony Pictures International is launching Animax Mobile in Canada and Australia; these are the first two markets to see the launch of the ‘made for mobile’ version of the anime TV channel. Targeted to P14-34, Animax Mobile launches in Australia on 3 mobile this week and will bow in Canada on Bell Mobility in July to users of 3G handsets with mobile video streaming capability. At launch, Animax Mobile will offer a specially packaged two-hour loop of four anime series, Blood+, Last Exile, ROD the TV, and The Count of Monte Cristo, and will also feature interstitial content, trivia and short form animation, as well as regional product like TechnoMax and ImagineNation from Animax Asia.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Director Barry Sonnenfeld will serve as a creative consultant to Vanguard Films and Animation on its new animated movie Space Chimps. The movie is written and will be directed by Kirk DeMicco (Racing Stripes). Additionally, the voice cast for the movie has been revealed and includes: Andy Samberg, Cheryl Hines, Jeff Daniels, Kenan Thompson, Stanley Tucci, Kristin Chenoweth and Patrick Warburton among others.
Director Sylvain White, who’s most recent movie is Stomp the Yard, will direct Castlevania, the live-action adaptation of Konami’s vampire videogame, which is co-produced by Universal’s Rogue Pictures and Crystal Sky Entertainment, per Variety. The movie is slated to begin shooting towards the end of 2007 in South Africa and Romania.
Casting Call: Let your inner Ogre and Donkey break out at the open auditions for Shrek the upcoming Broadway musical. Featuring music by Jeanine Tesori, book and lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire and directed by Jason Moore, this call is specifically for rock singers and Hip-Hop performers to audition for the parts of Shrek and Donkey. Auditions in LA will be held on Wednesday, June 20, sign up will be from 10-11a at Screenland II, 10501 Burbank Blvd. Scheduled to open on Broadway in 2008, the Shrek musical is produced by DreamWorks Animation Live Theatrical Productions and Neal Street Productions, Ltd.
MORE KIDS STUFF
BRB Internacional has completed the first sale for its new HD 3D animated series Angus & Cheryl (104 x 90 seconds) to Radio Canada. BRB will feature the series next week at both the Licensing Show in NYC and DISCOP in Budapest, where further production news is expected. The non-verbal series takes a humorous look at the ongoing battle between gals and guys through the relationship of its stars Angus & Cheryl, who happen to be total opposites. Angus & Cheryl is co-produced by BRB, Screen 21 and Televisio de Catalunya y Tuba Entertainment.
A fourth season of Portfolio Entertainment’s tween-targeted animated series, Carl2 (Carl Squared) has been commissioned by Teletoon. The new season (13×30′) will include another group of interactive episodes similar to the competition from season three, where viewers were asked to vote for their favorite Teen Super Star. Portfolio Entertainment will attend DISCOP next week offering a slate of kid/family/lifestyle programming content including Carl2 (65×30′), Spellz (26×15′), Amigo and Me (65×5′), Ruffus the Dog (26×15′) and The Panda Bear Daycare (26×15′) among others.
MARKETING/LICENSING
Taffy Entertainment has inked a worldwide licensing deal with Italy’s Atlantyca Entertainment, under which Taffy will oversee consumer products licensing for the new Geronimo Stilton animated TV series, based on the book series of the same name. Taffy will handle worldwide licensing and promotional rights to the TV series, except for worldwide publishing and all licensing in Italy. These rights will continue to be held by Atlantyca, the original rights holder. The Geronimo Stilton animated TV series is being co-produced by Atlantyca, 9 Story Entertainment and MoonScoop Productions. The Geronimo Stilton book series comes from Italy where it is published by Edizioni Piemme (Mondadori Group), and is published in the US by Scholastic.
Korea’s Cocaban Co. Ltd. has named Germany-based g.l.a.m. GmbH & Co. KG, as the pan-European licensing agent for JAJA, which was created by Seoul-based Tong Communications. Cocaban, which owns worldwide rights to JAJA. Under the agreement, g.l.a.m. will serve as Cocaban’s local business partner for rights exploitation through Europe, with plans to launch products across a number of categories including casual sports, apparel, footwear, bags, accessories, stationery and gifts among others in the second half of this year. Targeted to teens, JAJA is a character based property that revolves around a strong, energetic and health conscious girl (Jaja), and her partner/dog (Dding). Jaja was initially introduced in Korea in Yoga books.
Cartoon Network Enterprises has granted Franco Manufacturing with the merchandising rights for its original series Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends. Beginning October 2007, Franco Manufacturing will introduce products based on Fosters and continuing to unveil bedding, pillows, slumber bags, bath accessories and beach towels in spring 2008. Many of the new Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends products will be featured this fall at retailer, Hot Topic.
Radio Disney will support the release of Disney Pixar’s animated feature film Ratatouille with a Say Cheese Mega Sweepstakes. Beginning this Friday, June 15 through June 27, Radio Disney will broadcast a special sweepstakes word of the day. Listeners can enter the contest by calling Radio Disney’s request line (1-888-EARS 018) and/or by entering the code word online at http://radio.disney.go.com/index.html . Ratatouille premieres in theatres June 29.

The venerable Scott Webb has been tapped as Chief Creative Officer, Worldwide Biggies Inc, a digital studio that creates multi-platform content aimed at kids, families and young adults. He will be responsible for overseeing the company’s studio operations, creative development and marketing. Previously, Webb served as SVP, Creative Director of Oxygen Media, founded Afterlife, a production/branding company, and toiled for Nickelodeon for some 15-years, ultimately serving as EVP, Creative Director. Congrats Scott!
