Good Morning, it’s Thursday, June 14, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

ComScore began measuring the reach of widget providers, which create applications that can be used to produce and play embeddable videos, photo slideshows and music playlists. The system is an important first step in helping advertisers determine the reach of these small apps, which could carry their ads and spread them virally across the net on social networking pages, blogs and other sites. So far MySpace and Facebook, the top two social networking sites, don’t allow third-party ads on their sites. But many see widget-based advertising as the sites’ best chance to monetize their huge user bases.


~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
NBCU Digital Studios unveiled On Dating, an online video series with an interactive dating component. “Virtual dating coach” Andrea Syrtash hosts 3-8 minute webisodes giving users advice on how to write the perfect profile, how to interact through the web and how to spot the psychos. Episodes can be subscribed to via RSS feed, AppleTV or iPod and embedded for free on other sites. OnDating is just one of the original shows available on NBC’s self-help themed On Networks hub. Others include Budget Health Nut, Cocktails on the Fly, Golf Tips and Zen Living.
 
Sony Pictures Television and video sharing site Grouper launched a new user-generated companion feature inspired by FX hit Rescue Me. Real-life fire fighters are encouraged to submit videos of what it is really like working in a firehouse. Each episode (“first fire,” “camaraderie”) is kicked off with a clip from the show.
 
NBC Sports Mobile will tee off its MobiTV mobile phone video service with live coverage of the U.S. Open golf tournament from today. The NBC Sports channel will also offer coverage and highlights from Wimbledon and NFL games via MobiTV later this year.
 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
Apple signed a deal with Bebo that will allow the music-focused social network’s users to buy iTunes songs directly from its pages. Apple will initially offer the service to Bebo’s 8.8 million users in the UK and Ireland but may expand it to its entire 33 million worldwide user base. Bebo’s 500,000 registered musicians will also be able to use the interface to sell tracks to visitors, a legal alternative to downloading them off file sharing sites.
 
YouTube created a iGoogle Gadget that enables users to search for and watch YouTube videos directly from their customizable iGoogle home page. Search by most viewed, highest rated, recently added or most discussed.
 
Permission TV closed on $9 million of additional financing, led by Castile Ventures and Point Judith Capital. The online video publishing system counts Fox Interactive Media, Agency.com and Toyota among its clients.
 
Peer-to-peer video distributor Veoh Networks announced its user base grew to 12.5 million in May, a 19% increase over April and a 184% bump since officially launching in February. Veoh’s owners include Time Warner and Michael Eisner’s Tornante Company.


~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~
 

AT&T is joining with major Hollywood studios and record labels to try to keep pirated content off their network, according to The Los Angeles Times. The company is working to develop a technology solution that would target frequent offenders. The ISP realized when it got into the TV delivery business (via IPTV service U-Verse) that it has a vested interest in protecting professionally created content. Public interest groups are skeptical.
 
Sony Ericsson
will be the first cell phone supplier to deploy Gracenote‘s Mobile Music Platform, an integrated solution that simplifies content search and discovery, music recognition and playlisting. Gracenote maintains a digital database of 60 million music tracks from around the world, allowing for easy transfer of music among PCs, online music stores and mobile devices. The platform will be compatible with Sony’s newest Walkman models and the K850 Cyber-shot phone.
 
Ziff Davis Game Group and Gottaplay Interactive signed a deal to integrate Gottaplay’s video game rental and trading service with Ziff Davis’ social networking/editorial gaming site 1UP Network. Rent/Trade buttons will be placed on all of 1UP.com’s product pages as well as being tightly integrated within the My1UP user pages.
Apple is requiring anyone that wants to use the iPhone to sync music and video tracks with their computer to register with iTunes. That means entering credit card information but not necessarily buying anything. The idea is to create a financial relationship with consumers outside of the AT&T partnership, say analysts.

The Paley Center for Media, formerly known as the Museum of Television and Radio, is hosting a powwow this week in Silicon Valley, bringing tech leaders together with top media executives to work on ongoing issues including the big bugaboo­–piracy. Scheduled to attend are YouTube CEO Chad Hurley, Google CEO Eric Schmidt, Yahoo CEO Terry Semel and Sun CEO Jonathan Schwartz.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~
 

Google has created placement performance reports for its AdWords service, giving advertisers detailed performance metrics on how their ads performed on specific sites. The advance should do wonders for accountability. Until now contextual advertisers have been unable to see which sites are generating the most click-throughs.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~
 

Worldwide sales of Internet protocol television (IPTV) set-top boxes will soar to 7.9 million units in 2007, a year-over-year growth rate of 111 percent, according to a new report by Strategy Analytics. The Asia-Pacific region will account for a bulk of the growth, amounting to 45% of the installed base, followed by Europe with 33% and the U.S. with 13%. Worldwide DVRs installations are expected to almost double from 15% penetration in 2006 to 29% by the end of this year.

AOL named John Burbank as its Chief Marketing Officer. He left AT&T just before the Cingular rebranding and iPhone marketing campaigns kicked into high gear.
 
Gemstar-TV Guide named Debra Birnbaum Executive Editor, Cross-Platform Content Integration. She will be charged with content creation and integration across multiple platforms, working from New York and reporting to both CCO Ian Birch and CMO Alan Cohen.
 
Scott Webb, former EVP/Creative Director at Nickelodeon and SVP/Creative Director at Oxygen Media, has been named the Chief Creative Officer of Albie Hecht’s new digital studio Worldwide Biggies Inc. He will oversee Biggies’ studio operations, creative development and marketing.

Chime.tv is a new video site that features a range of channels, user-friendly creation tools and a powerful search function to help wade through the thousands of videos added to the web each day. Click on the video player to expand and contract the image. Click on the logo in the top right hand corner to be taken to the source site. Search for content from a number of popular sites including YouTube, Veoh, Metacafe, Google Video and DailyMotion.
