Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Thursday, June 12, 2008, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

School is most definitely out for summer, particularly if you were at The Ziegfield Theatre in NYC last night where Disney Channel premiered its new original movie Camp Rock, with a red carpet filled with the stars of the movie, which included (insert fingers in ears here) Jonas Brothers and Demi Lovato, Alyson Stoner, Anna Maria Perez de Tagle, Maria Canals-Barrera, and did I mention Jonas Brothers.  Camp Rock premieres on Disney Channel Friday, June 20 at 8p, as well as a simultaneous audio simulcast on Radio Disney and video simulcast on Sprint and MobiTV devices, as well as that night on Family Channel (Canada) and VRAK.TV (Quebec).  A preview will be offered on Tuesday, June 17 on Disney Channel on Demand, available to Cablevision iO Digital Cable, Time Warner and Verizon FiOS TV customers.  The movie then takes off to bow on ABC (June 21), ABC Family (June 22), Disney.com in DXD (June 23) and then off to the other Disney Channels around the world.  Cheers to Dea, Rebecca and our kid/tween escorts.  (I believe the shrieking may have subsided by now, so feel free to unplug your ears).

Nickelodeon is set to produce a Drake & Josh TV movie for air holiday 2008, per Variety.  Set to begin production next month, Drake & Josh: Best Christmas Ever will of course see actors Drake Bell and Josh Peck reprise their roles.  Series creator, Dan Schneider will executive produce, along with Margie Cohn and Lauren Levine (Bridge to Terabithia), while Bell and Peck will serve as co-producers on the project.  Michael Grossman (Grey’s Anatomy) is set to direct.  No word as of yet if the Miranda Cosgrove, now the star of her own Nick series iCarly, will reprise her Drake & Josh role as the brilliant younger sister Megan.

LICENSING INTERNATIONAL EXPO 2008

WGBH Boston and Studio B Productions, have inked a master publishing deal for Martha Speaks TV tie-in books with Houghton Mifflin.  The first Martha Speaks tie-in books will be available in North American during fall 2009.  In addition, Houghton Mifflin is re-launching the original Martha Speaks book series this fall, which will coincide with the launch of the animated series on September 1, 2008 on PBS Kids.  Lindberg Licensing & Promotions was recently named the exclusive North American licensing agent for the property.

Manga publisher Tokyopop appoints Big Tent Entertainment as its worldwide licensing agent.  Under the long-term deal, Big Tent will represent the Tokyopop master brand as well as its sub-brands, which includes manga titles such as Princess Ai, Bizenghast, I Luv Halloween, DramaCon and Van Von Hunter.  Big Tent will develop a licensing program for Tokyopop and its manga titles, which are aimed at various age demos, across the full gambit of categories.

Speed Racer Enterprises inks several new agency deals to represent both Speed Racer: The Next Generation (SR: TNG) and the classic Speed Racer animated series for licensing and merchandising.  The new deals will see G Squared Promotion handling licensing and merchandising for Canada, Empire International Merchandising Corporation covering Asia (excluding Japan), with EXIM Licensing group representing South, Central and Latin America, and BKN taking on Europe, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and the Middle East.  Additionally, there are a dozen new licensing deals for SP: TNG, which airs in the US on Nicktoons Network, including: Duncan Yo-Yo and Inter-Axions (toys); Baby Boom/Betesh Group (domestics, room decor); H.E.R. Accessories and Infinity Headwear (accessories); Playground Maniacs (trading cards, stickers, collection albums, tattoos); and in the apparel category new licensees include JEM Sportswear, Kids with Character, Level One Concepts, MTC and Steve & Barry’s.

Mirage Studios and 4Kids Entertainment’s Shell-ebration plans for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) 25th Anniversary year next year includes the launch of fan site TMNT25.  Designed to provide fans with updated information and offers related to the anniversary year, TMNT25.com will go live during ComicCon San Diego this July.  Currently being developed by Sype, the teaser fan site will eventually transition into a full interactive website as we move closer to 2009.  Peppercom’s marketing group Peppercommotions is managing the building of the site and its launch.

Guess who is turning 21?  Oh, I’ll tell you.  Where’s Waldo?  To celebrate his 21st birthday Entertainment Rights is launching a young-adult targeted multimedia marketing campaign and consumer products effort that includes a range of new deals: Local Celebrity (T-shirts), BioWorld (accessories), Elope (Halloween costumes) and USAOPOLY (puzzles).  This summer Waldo also takes to the web with a presence on social networking sites including Facebook, MySpace and Bebo.  Additionally, The Great Online Photo Hunt has launched online on Flickr.  The primary Waldo website launches this September.  Expect new Waldo books in the UK from Walker Books and in the US from Candlewick Press.

Putumayo Kids and Sesame Workshop announce the release of a new CD/DVD set Sesame Street Playground, which features songs and music videos from Sesame Street productions from around the world.  The tw0-disc set includes a CD with 13 songs, featuring the Sesame Street Muppets along with locally developed characters from different countries.  Sesame Street Playground is the first globally distributed Sesame Workshop audio CD.  The DVD features 5 music videos that showcase locales including Russia, South Africa and Mexico.  The liner notes appear in four languages.

Pokemon USA, Inc., and Burger King Corp. are set to launch a global Pokemon promotion beginning first in the US (July 7- August 7), followed by an international rollout throughout late summer and fall.  Burger King restaurants will offer one of 12 different exclusive Trading Card Game (TCG) cards and accessory with purchase of a BK Kids Meal.

CBS Consumer Products, inks beams on a dozen+ new licensing partners for its Star Trek franchise, including Mattel, Fortune Fashions (apparel with characters, phrases etc), and … yeah … Pez.  The first Star Trek Pez line will be available fall 2008.  Mattel holds the right to create a range of branded products including a line of Star Trek themed Barbie Collector dolls; Tyco R/C flying radio controlled vehicles; a Scene It? DVD game; and a 20q Star Trek trivia game.  Additional new Star Trek licensee partners include: Basic Fun (key chains, pens, bottle openers  US/Canada); DecoPac (cake decorations  US/Canada); Dreamlink (USB accessories, US); GIT (digital comics  worldwide); Armitron/E. Gluck Corp. (watches  US/Canada); IGPC (collectible stamps  worldwide); Les Chocolats Vadeboncoeur (Easter chocolates  Canada); Northwest (pillows, throws  US/Canada); Round Two (polar lights, plastic model kits  US/Canada); Rubies (costumes  worldwide).

MORE KIDS STUFF

ABC has scheduled a summer of special guest hosted segments to air during The Wonderful World of Disney movies on Saturday nights, beginning this weekend. 

  • Monsters, Inc. (June 14, 8-11p) – hosted by John Goodman (the voice of Sulley), the night also features Pixar animated shorts, and a look at Pixar movie-themed attractions at the Disney parks.
  • Camp Rock (June 21, 8-11p) – Jonas Brothers host and offer a peek at High School Musical: Get in the Picture, the Cheetah Girls and the One World music video, and the premiere of their own new Burnin’ Up music video, and a look at the making of that video.
  • The Haunted Mansion, Saturday June 28 (8-10p)  the night includes Miley Cyrus in a behind-the-scenes segment of her music video 7 Things, and of course the actual video.
  • The Princess Diaries 2: The Royal Engagement (July 12, 8-10p), also includes a look at the restoration process of Disney’s animated Sleeping Beauty, which supports the 50th anniversary DVD/Blue-ray release of the movie.
  • Freaky Friday (July 19, 8-10p) – Jamie Lee Curtis (who stars in the movie), hosts and talks about her new movie, Beverly Hills Chihuahua.
  • Peter Pan (August 2, 8-10p)  Raven-Symone does the honors, which includes a peek at the new animated movie Tinker Bell, in which she stars, releasing on DVD/Blue-ray fall 2008.

Elsewhere, Disney.com will stream full-length movies from its family friendly archive of Wonderful World of Disney movies for the first time this summer, for free. Titles such as Finding Nemo, Monsters Inc., Haunted Mansion, Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen, Princess Diaries 2 and Peter Pan will be offered for week after they air on ABC, with only one pre-roll ad.

Turner Broadcasting acquires the fourth season of the live-action comedy series Life with Derek (18×30) from Shaftesbury for air on Boomerang in the UK for air in 2009.  Turner recently picked up the second season of UK live-action series My Spy Family for the network.

De Agostini, the new Italian kid’s broadcaster, has acquired two seasons (52 episodes) of the animated series Around the World with Willy Fog from BRB International.  The action/adventure series is set to premiere on De Agostini this fall 2008.  Based on three novels by Jules Verne, Around the World with Willy Fog follows the globetrotting adventures of the English lion Willy Fog, a beautiful Hindu panther, Princess Romy, a loyal French lynx, Rigodon, and a Spanish hamster, Tico.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Chorion appoints Bettina Kockler as VP/Licensing, UK & EMEA.  Kockler will be responsible for growing and developing Chorion’s licensing, merchandising and publishing activities in the UK and Europe.  She will report to Eric Karp, EVP/Global Licensing and Merchandising.  Kockler, who joins the company from Licensing International, also recently served as a licensing/merchandising consultant for the likes of CBS, IRMASWORLD, Sony Pictures and 19 Entertainment.  She was previously Chairman of MerchandisingMedia.

Parthenon Entertainment Germany expands its Munich office as it plans to grow its business into Eastern Europe.  Mirjam Muetzel is named Sr. Sales Manager for Eastern Europe.  She joins Parthenon from Telcast Media Group, where her responsibilities included International Acquisitions and Sales to German-speaking territories, as well as Russia.  Angela Weiss also joins the company as a rights expert.  Both Muetzel and Weiss will report to Christine von Preyss, Head of the Munich office.
