Cynopsis: Kids!
07/07/11

Good morning. It’s Thursday, July 7, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Paramount Pictures, a unit of Viacom, is launching a new in-house animation division, aptly titled Paramount Animation, which initially plans to release one title per year beginning with its first feature film set for release in 2014.  With a focus on animated movies with budgets of up to $100 million, Paramount Animation will develop a range of family-targeted CGI animated feature films, with a key element of its slate being movies under the Nickelodeon banner, also part of Viacom.  Paramount will also exploit all merchandising opportunities for all Paramount Animation releases.  The studio’s new division will be part of the Paramount Motion Picture Group, reporting to group President, Adam Goodman.  The search is on for the head of the new division.  In March of this year Paramount released Rango, its first fully owned CGI animated property, which was directed by Gore Verbinski and featuring Johnny Depp’s voice.  Paramount has had a distribution deal with Dreamworks Animation, which concludes at the end of 2012.  According to THR, Paramount has offered Dreamworks Animation’s Jeffrey Katzenberg a one-year deal extension, and then plans to renegotiate from there, but there is no signed deal.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

American Greetings Properties (AGP) gives the go ahead for production on a brand new CGI animated Care Bears TV series.  The new Care Bears series is salted to launch in 2012 to coincide with the 30th anniversary of the property.   Additionally, Hasbro is developing new toy line that will debut in 2013.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Univision Network will broadcast the eighth Annual Premios Juventud (Youth Awards) live on Thursday, July 21 at 8p, from the BankUnited Center in Miami.  Leading into the live show the network will also feature exclusive coverage of celebrity red carpet arrivals from 7p.  The show will feature a wide range of performances and worldwide premieres of songs, including Natalia Jimenez offering the TV debut of her new single Por Ser Tu Mujer, from her first solo album.  Colombian singer Fanny Lu will also perform her new single Fanfarron in an exclusive worldwide premiere.  Also performing will be multi nominee Ricky Martin, and Mexican band Reik will perform their newest song, Peligro.  Fans will find exclusive coverage of this year’s performers at PremiosJuventud.com ( www.PremiosJuventud.com) and on their mobile phones.  Users will also be able to watch live streaming content from backstage, available online and on VCAST.  Additionally, fans can also potentially be part of the show by submitting their videos online for a chance to be a part of Joey Montana’s performance, and text their comments to appear on-screen during the show.  Pre and post show content will be available at Univision On Demand from Tuesday, July 12 through Monday, August 22.  The entire awards show will be available on Univision On Demand on Friday, July 23.

Cartoon Network will premiere the third season of the animated series Adventure Time on Monday, July 11, at 8p.  Created by Pendleton Ward, Adventure Time is produced in partnership with Frederator Studios, with Fred Seibert serving as an executive producer on the series.  The property is being licensed through Cartoon Network Enterprises.

BBC Kids (Canada) acquires 75+ hours of programming and interactive content from DHX Media.  Under the deal, BBC Kids, which is operated by Knowledge Network, picks up a range of animated and live-action factual programming from DHX Media’s library including Olliver’s Adventures (39×30), D’Myna Leagues (26×30), What About Mimi? (39×22) and Yakkity Yak (26×30), as well as Be the Creature (26×60).  An English language, commercial-free Canadian channel, BBC Kids is jointly owned by Knowledge Network and BBC Worldwide.  Earlier this year Knowledge Network purchased Shaw Media’s interest in the BBC Kids channel.

Church & Dwight‘s brands Orajel and Arm & Hammer Spinbrush renews their sponsorship for a new season of the K4-8 targeted Thomas & Friends on PBS Kids.  Under the new sponsorship deal, Church & Dwight will continue to underwrite the production, distribution and promotion of the TV series.  The Thomas & Friends TV series is produced by HIT Entertainment, and Thirteen, for WNET New York Public Media, is a production station for PBS.  WNET is the parent company of NY’s public TV stations Thirteen and WLIW21.  WNET has long been the presenting station for HIT Entertainment’s programming content including Barney and Bob the Builder, and co-producer of Angelina Ballerina The Next Steps.

Munich-based Your Family Entertainment (YFE) acquires the rights to the CG animated feature film Happily N’Ever After (2007) for worldwide TV distribution, home video, book publishing, music and merchandising.  A Vanguard Animation Production, Happily N’Ever After is based on the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen, and was released by Lions Gate Films.  The movie’s voice cast includes Sarah Michelle Gellar, Freddie Prinze Jr., George Carlin, Wallace Shawn, Patrick Warburton, and Sigourney Weaver.

Correction:  Spin Master and Zodiak Kids/Marathon Media’s new animated series Redakai: Conquer the Kairu will premiere in the US on Cartoon Network on Saturday, July 23 at 10a (airing regularly on Saturdays at 10a), while in Canada the series will make its debut on YTV on Saturday, July 9 at 1p (airing regularly on Saturdays at 1p).

MARKETING/LICENSING

HarperCollins Children’s Books launches the I Can Read digital ebook program ( www.icanread.com/ebooks ), an early reader program, on Apple’s iBookstore ( www.itunes.com/ICanRead ) and Barnes & Noble’s Nook Bookstore ( www.barnesandnoble.com/u/nook-kids-i-can-read/379002805 ).  The I Can Read early reader book line launched initially in 1957 and now includes 400+ titles by noted authors and illustrators including Arnold Lobel, Rob Scotton, Stan, Jan, and Mike Berenstain, and Jane O’Connor and Robin Price Glasser.  The ebooks include classic titles such as Biscuit, Frog and Toad Are Friends, and The Berenstain Bears’ Class Trip, and newer titles such as Fancy Nancy at the Museum and Splat the Cat Sings Flat.  The ebook versions feature audio read-along with sound effects (synched to the word or page), taking kids through the process of early reading together to advanced reading alone.

Marvel Entertainment teams with the National Football League’s Dallas Cowboys for a collection of co-branded merchandise for infants, kids, and adults.  Under the deal, the Dallas Cowboys will be able to license Marvel’s Super Heroes to develop co-branded merchandise, which will feature Captain America, Spider-Man, Iron Man, Thor, among others decked out in Cowboy’s team colors, logos and jerseys.  Set to debut at mass, mid-tier and sporting good retailers, as well as at Cowboys Stadium and team fan shops this summer, the new Marvel and Cowboys collection will feature t-shirts, sweatshirts, hoodies, caps and onesies.  The Cowboys are the only major sporting team that designs, manufactures, and distributes it own apparel through its own division, Dallas Cowboys Merchandising.

Answer to Yesterday’s Trivia: Legendary animator Tex Avery created the “characters” in this long running commercial campaign in the 1970s and those spots still run today.  Who are these creatures?  THE RAID ANTS  Kudos to: Paula Allen-Nickelodeon Global Publishing/NY; Jim Salicrup-Papercutz/NY

Today’s Trivia Question:  Who penned this lovely little poem?

My spider’s quite a busy roamer
Which is why I called her Homer.
She may not jump or twist or bend
But a spider is a girl’s best friend.
