Good morning. It’s Thursday, July 31, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing. 

The premiere of season #3 of Sci Fi Channel‘s original series Eureka debuted on Tuesday night at 9p and delivered 2.808 million total viewers.  In the key demos, Eureka deliver 1.426 A25-54, and 1.301 million A18-49. That makes this premiere episode the most watched performance of the series since its series premiere in July 2006, and made it the #1 cable program for the day among A25-54.  Eureka is produced by Sci Fi Channel in association with Universal Cable Productions.

Time Warner Cable and Verizon will begin carrying select Si TV hi-def programming via their on demand services.  Time Warner will launch Model Latina beginning early August.  Verizon FIOS TV launched Model Latina and Jammin on its HD on Demand service at the end of last week.  Model Latina follows 10 Latinas as they take a crash course in becoming their own brand, reflecting their roots, and merging their Latino traditions with American culture. Jammin Season 2 chronicles the dreams and aspirations of up and coming Latino indie bands while exploring the diverse music genres, tastes and influences of the Si generation.
Prior to the launch on its linear channel, Sundance Channel will bring six new films from the upcoming season of Asia Extreme to Sundance Channel on Demand, beginning tomorrow.  Asia Extreme showcases the work of innovative filmmakers in a variety of genre movies – crime, thrillers, sci fi, comedies, etc.  The six films are Old Boy (revenge/thriller), The Ghost of Mae Nek (ghost story), The Maid (horror), The President’s Last Bang (thriller), Re-Cycle (thriller), The Red Shoes (thriller).

New HBO project called How to Make it In America, focused on a group of 20-somethings out to make it big in New York City.  Executive producing the project are Stephen Levinson, Ian Edelman who will also write the script, Mark Wahlberg and Rob Weiss.

CBS is reportedly working on an updated version of Streets of San Francisco, the early 1970s crime drama starring Karl Malden and a pretty young Michael Douglas.

Don’t Do This, Don’t Do That (Fais pas ci, fais pas ca) has proved to be funny enough for ABC to acquire the U.S. rights to the French comedy show from Sweden’s Sparks Network.  Bob Kushell has been named to adapt the show as well exec produce with Imagina’s Promofilm U.S. unit.  The show delves into 2 families’ lives in using a documentary-style format.

CBS has a new project in development from Josh Berman called The CRU, produced by Sony Pictures TV, reports Variety.  At the center of this crime drama is homicide detective Michael Bennett, who is also the lead in James Patterson’s 2007 novel Step on a Crack. CRU stands for Catastrophe Response Unit.  This is the second time a character or characters from a Patterson novel have been used in a television series – the first was for Murder Club last season.

TNT has ordered a script for a project called Time Heals from producer John Masius, reports THR.  The story is about a woman and single mother who is also the head of nursing at a hospital in North Carolina.  Sony Pictures TV is producing.

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORYYouTube is facing another lawsuit over copyright infringement, this time from the Italian broadcaster Mediaset, the company controlled by Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi. In a sample analysis Mediaset counted 4,643 of its videos on the video sharing site. The company is seeking $779 million in damages. Full edition: CYN DIGITAL.

CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  (Now with HTML elements!)  Nickelodeon and National Amusements join to launch Nick Jr. at the Movies beginning today in 36 movie theaters across 12 states.  Targeted to preschoolers and their caregivers, Nick Jr. at the Movies is a 50-minute program running Thursday and Saturday mornings at 10a ($6/per person), each featuring two episodes of Nick Jr. shows, all of which have been reformatted for the big screen.  The movie theater program also includes sing-along music videos and international from Nick Jr.  To begin eight different programs will bow in 2008 followed by additional programs in 2009. CYNOPSIS INTERNATIONAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY: Russia is the latest country to take on The Successor with TV Channel Russia commissioning a localized version of the format with Uri Geller on board as a juror and mentor.  Eight episodes will air in primetime on Saturday night under the name Fenomen hosted by Denis Semenikhin. Tuesday – A18-49 Analysis:   ABC won the night on Tuesday with an overall A18-49 demo rating of 2.8/8, according to Nielsen Media Research.  NBC was a nearby #2 with a 2.6/8.  At 8p Wipeout on ABC led with a 3.6/11, nearly doubling the closest share of 2.0/6 for NBC’s Celebrity Family Feud.  At 9p America’s Got Talent dominated with a 3.7/10, while ABC and CBS tied at 2.3/6.  And at 10p Diane Sawyer’s Primetime retrospective of Randy Pausch and The Last Lecture was in front with a 2.4/7.

Steve Mosko has re-upped with Sony Pictures TV through 2012.  It’s been a big year for Sony – a couple dozen Emmy nominations and the distribution rights to the newest Harpo Productions syndicated offering – Dr. Oz.

Freddie Prinze, Jr., a long-time fan of World Wrestling Entertainment®, joins WWE®’s creative team and will have a behind-the-scenes role contributing to WWE’s weekly television and pay-per-view programs. Precisely what he’ll be doing behind-the-scenes creatively has not been specifically shared. 

Lisa Wookey appointed Director/Marketing and Communications for the development, production and distribution of the combined companies, BLUEPRINT ENTERTAINMENT and OASIS INTERNATIONAL.  In this newly-minted senior level Marketing & Communications position, Ms. Wookey will oversee all marketing and publicity requirements for both the Sales and Production teams.  Based in Toronto, Ms. Wookey will report to Peter Emerson, President of Oasis International and John Morayniss, Chairman & CEO of Blueprint Entertainment. 

Loren Ruch and Brian Balthazar joined HGTV as Directors/Original Programming.  Loren, based at the network’s Knoxville headquarters, makes the move from Scripps Productions where he was an executive producer.  Brian heads to HGTV from NBC’s Today Show where he was supervising producer and oversaw the program’s fourth hour. the network as directors of original programming.  Brian will be based in the HGTV New York office as of August 18.

MTV Networks International upped Jules Borkent to SVP/Global Acquisitions and International Programming, Nickelodeon. In this newly created position, he will be in charge of global acquisition and programming for brands such as iCarly, SpongeBob SquarePants, Avatar and Dora the Explorer, overseeing Nickelodeon International’s operations and acquisitions for the U.S.’ Nickelodeon Networks.  Jules will move to New York from London while reporting to Steve Grieder, SVP/Nickelodeon International and Pete Danielsen, EVP/Programming, MTV Networks Kids & Family.

IFC upped Craig Parks to VP/Digital Media. He will oversee the networks’ alternative platforms including, IFC syndicated digital content and IFC Free, the network’s video on demand service and continue to report to Jennifer Caserta, IFC’s EVP & GM.
