Good morning. It’s Thursday, July 29, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
Looking for new ways to engage teens in reading, Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing partners with LivingSocial’s Visual Bookshelf to launch the teen-targeted online serial novel Loser/Queen ( www.loserqueen.com ) by author Jodi Lynn Anderson. The Loser/Queen online novel is sponsored by JCPenney. Teens are invited to the site to read the first chapters of the book and then vote on where the story goes from there, with new chapters and voting updated each Monday through September 13. Readers will also get to voice their opinion about cover art for the paperback and e-book edition book, which will release December 21, 2010.
Cardiff, Wales-based Calon TV, an animation company that focuses on kids programming, has voluntarily filed for bankruptcy following discussions with potential investors that did not come to fruition, per BBC. Calon’s directors, who explained that following those discussions they “acted quickly in order to ensure that losses to suppliers are minimized.” The directors intend to remain involved with the company in some way. Calon TV’s newest animated series Igam Ogam, which revolves around a cave girl and her pals and is narrated by noted Welsh actor Ioan Gruffudd, is currently running on S4C (Wales) and Five’s Milkshake programming strand (UK), and its upcoming puppet series Zoo Factor, will screen on CBBC. The company is also known for series SuperTed, Hana’s Helpline, Fireman Sam, Under Milk Wood, and Hilltop Hospital.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Production has begun in the UK on the newest incarnation of Richmal Crompton’s Just William (four episodes) from Simon Nye (Men Behaving Badly, Reggie Perrin) for BBC One and CBBC. The Just William features a noted cast including Warren Clarke and Caroline Quentin, as the new neighbors, Daniel Ryan and Rebecca Front as William’s parents, Daniel Roche as William, and featuring Denis Lawson, John Sessions and Bruce Mackinnon as William’s exasperated teachers. Martin Jarvis, who voiced the classic recordings of Just William, will narrate the new four-part TV series. Just William will air later year on BBC One and CBBC.
MORE KIDS STUFF
Hannah Montana Forever joins Family Channel (Canada) on Monday, August 4 at 6p. The new season features special guest appearances by Ray Liotta, Christine Taylor and Sheryl Crow. Leading into the premiere of Hannah Montana Forever, Family Channel will host a three-hour Hannah Montana marathon from August 4 at 3p. Hannah Montana Forever made its debut earlier this month on Disney Channel US.
Episodes of different international versions of Sesame Street from 12 countries are being made available in the use via Amazon VOD. Fans can watch full episodes of Sesame Street From Around The World for free including Sesame Workshop co-productions: Takalani Sesame (South Africa); Sesame Tree (Northern Ireland); Galli Galli Sim Sim (India); Alam SimSim (Egypt); Sisimpur (Bangladesh); Vila Sesamo (Brazil); Jalan Sesama (Indonesia); Rechov Sumsum (Israel); Hikayat Simsim (Jordan); Rruga Sesam/Ulica Sezam (Kosovo); Shara’s Simsim (Palestine); and Ulitsa Sezam (Russia).
The Television Syndication Company (TVS) and Sunrise Entertainment sign TV license deals for the kid-targeted green themed series Eco Company (13×30) with TVNZ (New Zealand), TVB (Hong Kong), and Al Jazeera (Middle East).
MARKETING/LICENSING
Sanrio, lifestyle brand and creator of Hello Kitty, celebrates its 50th anniversary this year as it offers up six more of its characters for licensing. Sanrio’s UK licensing agent Fluid World is launching UK licensing programs under the Sanrio umbrella for My Melody, Keroppi, CharmmyKitty, Chococat, Badtz Maru and Kuromi. While the characters are popular in Japan, this marks their first official debut in the UK. The licensing effort got underway recently with product trials in Claire’s Accessories in Europe. Fluid World will present Sanrio’s My Melody, Keroppi, CharmmyKitty, Chococat, Badtz Maru and Kuromi to the trade at The Licensing Awards in September 2010, followed in October by the consumer products debut at retail including select gift items. A full line of products will release in fall/winter 2011.
My Gym Enterprises, operator of 200 kid fitness clubs, signs on with CAA Licensing, a division of Creative Artists Agency. Under the deal CAA licensing will represent My Gym worldwide and develop brand extensions in a range of licensing categories.

Telemundo appoints Diana Mogollon as GM, mun2. She will report to Jacqueline Hernandez COO, Telemundo. Mogollon joined Telemundo five years ago as VP/Programming and Marketing, also serving as the network’s West Coast liaison and working closely with programming and productions. She previously toiled as VP, Galan Entertainment.
