Good Morning, it’s Thursday, July 26, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
A United Nations arbitration agency ruled a Brooklyn man must return the domain name thesimpsonsmovie.com to Twentieth Century Fox just in time for film’s release tomorrow. Keith Malley had been using the URL to divert users to a web site featuring Simpsons characters in compromising positions, according to an AP report and was demanding $50,000 from Fox to turn over the rights to the web address. The World Intellectual Property Organization was founded in 1999 to protect companies against such cyber-extortion.
CNN’s YouTube debates brought in the intended younger 18-34 demo. A total of 407,000 young folks tuned in – a record for a debate televised on cable news for the demo. The telecast averaged 2.6 million viewers overall, according to Nielsen, placing it just behind CNN’s June 3 Democratic debates in New Hampshire (which averaged 2.8 million viewers.)
NBC Digital Entertainment announced new digital extensions for its fall line up of new and returning shows while we were away last week. Highlights include:
- Bionic Woman – A weekly “anatomy of a scene” feature will go behind the scenes and show users how scenes are filmed using camera tricks, special effects and other secrets.
- Chuck – Chuck’s “brain” will host hotspots that reveal top-secret government information and bonus video. NerdHerdHelp.com will host additional exclusive content.
- Journeyman – Look for an interactive online video timeline, an online trivia quiz and “then” and “now” photos.
- Life – Fans will be able to further investigate Billy’s conspiracy wall as he learns more about who put him behind bars. Users will also enjoy Billy’s online “Zen Guide To Life.”
- 30 Rock – Kenneth the Page will give users a tour of NBC and “TGS” (“The Girly Show”). Frank will also blog from the writer’s room.
- Deal or No Deal – Fans will catch up with their favorite winners and see how they spent their winnings through a web-exclusive series that follows up and tracks past contestants.
- Las Vegas – A “making of” Production Video Diary that will give users a behind-the-scenes look at everything from the racy costume department to set design.
Spanish language film distributor Venevision International signed a deal with Amazon to distributes English-subtitled films through its video download service Unbox.
VH1.com launched The Score, an online search to find the best undiscovered music producer to score this year’s VH1 awards show Hip Hop Honors. The winner will receive show credit for the score/theme of this year’s show and a trip to NYC to attend the taping of the fourth annual “VH1 Hip Hop Honors” celebration in New York in October.
WCSN announced an agreement with the International Equestrian Federation to deliver live and on-demand coverage of the entire Samsung Super League events and competitions from around the world. Fans can catch all the action on WCSN’s newly launched equestrian channel, as well as on its 24/7 television channel and syndicated television series.
Popular Silicon Valley blogger Om Malik made his debut on a new online interview show on Revision3 featuring 10-minute chats with tech CEOs and entrepreneurs. His first subjects include RealNetworks’ Rob Glaser and Seagate’s Bill Watkins. The GigaOm Show will also appear on Om’s blog. Revision3 was founded by Digg founders Jay Adelson, Kevin Rose and others.
Joost co-founder Niklas Zennstrom said the P2P TV sharing service has attracted more than one million beta testers at a press event in Estonia. Joost in on track to officially launch by year end.
TubeMogul launched as a cross-network tool used to track online video consumption across multiple sites including YouTube, Revver, MetaCafe and MySpace. Individual videos and publishers can be tracked and organized into lists including top viewed and average rating. TubeMogul also creates customized reports for publishers and advertisers.
Answers.com and mtvU partnered to launch an interactive reference tool on mtvU’s 500-site College Media Network. The school sites now have access to the patented AnswerTips technology, enabling readers to double-click on any word or phrase in an article and launch an “information bubble” with a relevant explanation and/or definition.
Nokia acquired online photo sharing site Twango for a reported $96.8 million. Nokia plans to integrate the web-based service with its cell phones and mobile devices to allow users share photos, videos and messages on both platforms.
Verizon Wireless became the first mobile provider to enable video recording and direct uploading to YouTube, using the shortcode text number YTUBE to complete the transfer. Users’ YouTube account must be first modified at the YouTube WAP site.
The Wii console has officially brought Nintendo back from the earnings doldrums, posting net income of $667 million from April-June on total sales of $2.83 billion. Nintendo reported it sold 3.43 million Wiis worldwide during the quarter, bringing total units sold since launch to 9.27 million.
Apple reported profit jumped 73% and quarterly revenue climbed 24% to $5.41 billion on strong sales of iPods and Mac computers. It did not disclose the exact number of iPhones sold (mentioning 270,000 iPhones and “related accessories sold,”) but AT&T’s 146,000 number had an adverse effect on the stock this week.
Microsoft signed a deal to become the exclusive provider of display and contextual advertising for content aggregator Digg, which has base of over 17 million unique monthly users. Federated Media Publishing and Google were Digg’s former advertising partners.
In game advertising company Massive Inc., acquired by Microsoft last year, will begin dynamically serving ads to five new EA game titles – Madden, Nascar ’08, NHL ’08 and Skate for the Xbox 360 and Tiger Woods PGA Tour 08 for Xbox and Windows PCs.
Fifty-seven percent of online adults have used the internet to watch or download video and 19% do so on a typical day, according to a new study by the Pew Internet & American Life Project. Young viewers (18-29) are even more likely to watch, with 31% saying they do so on a typical day. Three-quarters of broadband users (74%) who enjoy high-speed connections at both home and work watch or download video online. The group’s first major report on online video also shows how many video viewers have contributed to the viral and social nature of online video. More than half of online video viewers (57%) share links to the video they find with others, and three in four (75%) say they receive links to watch video that others have sent to them.
Internet TV advertising revenue could reach $10 billion worldwide by 2011, according to new research from Understanding and Solutions, which would represent 18% of the total internet ad market for that year.
NBC‘s top digital executive Jeff Gaspin was named President and COO of the newly formed Universal Television Group, adding oversight of the Telemundo network and its 16 O&Os to his responsibilities, along with NBC’s domestic first-run and off-net syndication. Jeff will continue to oversee the television group’s distribution including wireless, digital and cable investments, as well as NBCU’s entertainment cable networks – Bravo, Chiller, SCI FI Channel, Sleuth, Universal HD and USA Network – and their digital extensions.
Telepictures Productions named Bob Mohler to Executive In Charge, New Media, reporting to Hilary Estey, President. He will oversee the company’s digital initiatives, working with show producers to develop online formats for existing properties and manage web integrations and ad strategies with the ad sales group.
Christie Morrongiello has been named to the newly created position of Director of the National Academy of Media Arts & Sciences (NAMAS), a digital peer group of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) made up of digital creators, producers, technologists and executives. Lauren Saverine will serve as its Administrator. The NATAS board voted unanimously to form the group in May, open to current and new members of any of its 19 chapters. NATAS, not NAMAS, will continue to award broadband Emmys.
Facebook hired former YouTube finance chief Gideon Yu as its new CFO, reporting directly to CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Former Chief Financial Officer Mike Sheridan is leaving the company.
Not to be confused with the professional social networking site Linkedin, Reeledin is a free component of online video site The Daily Reel trying to create a platform online filmmakers can use to communicate with the industry and gain exposure. Visitors can register to the site as “creative” types (producers, directors, etc.) or “employers” (production companies, talent agencies, advertisers). Users can search for projects, pitch requests or crew openings, or share experiences with what equipment works and what doesn’t. The featured users line up does a good job of highlighting who’s getting work and what companies are hiring them.

Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) – is the open international standard for applications written for cell phones or other wireless devices including Blackberrys and PDAs. A WAP browser surfs sites written to the standard, just like an internet web browser does. WAP sites, written in Wireless Markup Language) end to simpler and less video intensive to accommodate mobile devices’ slower networks and smaller screens.
