Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Thursday, July 22, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Nickelodeon greenlights The Legend of Korra (working title), a new animated TV series set 70-years after the animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender and from the same creators, Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko.  The Legend of Korra is slated to premiere on Nickelodeon in 2011.  The series follows the adventures of the new Avatar named Korra, a passionate, rebellious and fearless teen girl from the Southern Water Tribe.  Having gained control over three of the four elements (Earth, Water, and Fire), Korra works to master the final element, Air.  Korra’s airbending training is overseen by her tutor Tenzin, who is Aang’s son (the previous Avatar).  The new series will be produced at Nickelodeon Animation Studios in Burbank.  Avatar: The Last Airbender animated series originally launched on Nickelodeon in February 2005 and ran for three seasons.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

The ensemble cast of Martin Scorsese‘s live-action 3D adventure movie Hugo Cabret rounds out with two new members Emily Mortimer (City Island, Shutter Island) and Michael Stuhlbarg (A Serious Man).  Based on Brian Selznick’s kid-targeted book The Invention of Hugo Cabret, the movie also stars Ben Kingsley, Sacha Baron Cohen, Jude Law, Christopher Lee, Asa Butterfield and Chloe Moretz, Ray Winstone, Helen McCrory, Frances de la Tour, and Richard Griffiths.  The movie is penned by John Logan (Rango, Sweeney Todd, Gladiator), and produced by Scorsese, GK Films’ Graham King and Tim Headington, and Johnny Depp, with executive producers Emma Tillinger Koskoff, Charles Newirth and Christi Dembrowski.  Currently filming at London’s Shepperton Studios, Hug Cabret is scheduled for a December 2011 release in North America from Sony Pictures.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Televisa (Mexico) acquires the animated comedy/action-adventure series Hero:108 (52×11) in a deal with Moonscoop.  Hero:108 is a collaborative effort of artists from Asia, Europe and Hollywood and is a co-production between Gamania, Moonscoop and Cartoon Network.  Ireland’s Telegael Teo is also involved in the co-production.  The new Massively Multiplayer Online Game (MMOG) based on the series and developed by RedGate Games, a unite of Asia-based Gamania Digital Entertainment, had its open beta launch this month in Asia.

Al Jazeera Children’s Channel‘s preschool-targeted Baraem TV acquires the WotWots (52×10).  Baraem TV will debut the preschool series in primetime in 2011.  Already airing in New Zealand, Australia and Canada, the WotWots is also slated to debut this fall in the US on The Hub, when the channel launches on October 10, 2010.  the WotWots is produced by Pukeko Pictures, a partnership between Richard Taylor and author/creator Martin Baynton, and is made at Taylor’s Weta Workshop.

Michael Poryes, Hannah Montana co-creator and executive producer, will deliver the keynote address at MIPJunior, which will be held in Cannes, October 2-3, 2010.  In addition to Hannah Montana, Poryes also co-created and executive produced Disney Channel’s That’s So Raven, and was co-executive producer on series including Cybill and Veronica’s Closet.  He also served as a writer on TV series including The Facts of Life, Who’s the Boss?, and Saved by the Bell.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Disney Consumer Products and Target team up to launch D-Signed, a new tween-targeted apparel and accessories line (prices $5-$20) debuting for back-to-school this August 1, 2010, available exclusively at Target stores and Target.com.  The initial D-Signed line launches with designs based Sonny Munroe, the character played by Demi Lovato on Disney Channel’s Sonny With A Chance.  The mix and match clothing (tween girl sizes 4-16) does not feature characters or show logos, rather the line is based on the look and personality of a specific character and series.  The D-Signed fashion line is being supported with a YouTube music video/advertisement (1:40) from Disney Living of Lovato’s song Me, Myself, and Time.

BabyTV enters into a three-year deal with Empire International Merchandising to act as the licensing and merchandising agent for BabyTV across Asia (excluding Japan).  In the last year BabyTV has expanded in Asia including brand partnerships in Hong Kong, Singapore, and Malaysia. Additionally, BabyTV recently launched in Thailand and Australia, and as a daily bock on free-to-air broadcaster aTV (Hong Kong).

Zest Books, publisher of teen-targeted books, shifts its distribution to Houghton Mifflin Harcourt from independent sales reps, per Publishers Weekly.  The new deal takes effect from January 2011.

RATINGS

TeenNick sets a new record with the premiere of its original two-hour Degrassi TV movie, The Heat is On, on Monday, July 19 (9p).  The new TV movie becomes the networks most-watched telecast in TeenNick’s history with Total Viewers 2+ (1.2 million).  The Heat Is On, which also kicks of the 10th season of Degrassi, was also the top show on all TV with Teens 12-17 (665,000) and Females 12-17 (610,000).  Additionally, TeenNick earned its most-watched week (7/12-7/18/10) ever with Total Viewers.
