Good Morning. It’s Thursday, July 20, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.
Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution continues to string together more clearances for Two and a Half Men set to launch in syndication in the fall of 2007. So far the show has been cleared by the Tribune stations (you knew that already), as well as (here’s the part you didn’t know) to the Fox-owned stations in Minneapolis and Baltimore; Belo-owned stations in Phoenix and Tucson; CBS-owned stations in San Francisco and Detroit; the Sinclair-owned station in Pittsburgh; and WRAZ/Raleigh owned by Capitol Broadcasting. We’ll keep you posted as more come in.
ABC News has officially changed the name of its evening newscast from World News Tonight to World News with Charles Gibson, and if you happen to be watching last evening, you saw the change go into effect. The two weekend editions will be called World News Saturday and World News Sunday. “After a difficult 14 months, Charlie’s presence at ‘World News’ brings a stability and momentum we have not known in some time,” ABC News President David Westin said. “He’s our anchor, and it is only appropriate that the broadcast should bear his name.”
The Tuesday night two-hour premiere of the original scripted series Eureka on the SCI FI Channel was the #1 cable program that night with 4.0 million total viewers; 1.9 million viewers in the A25-54 demo, and 1.7 million A18-49 viewers. The series also has the distinction of being SCI FI’s highest rated telecast in its history to date.
In a new partnership deal, Nash Entertainment has agreed to house its video library of outrageous TV productions for search and playback on Google Video. A sampling of the titles includes When Good Pets Go Bad and World’s Deadliest Sea Creatures and World’s Worst Drivers Caught on Tape.
The latest addition to the iTunes video music store – episodes of CBS’ Big Brother: All Stars. The full season of 25+ episodes can be purchased at $29.99, or at the standard going rate of $1.99 per episode. The show can also be watched on CBS’ Innertube streaming service.
NBC will promote the premiere episodes of two new fall series – Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip and Kidnapped – to Netflix subscribers. The Netflix service currently has about five million subscribers, and any of them who include these two shows on their personal Netflix lists, will receive the DVD in the mail. The DVD also includes trailers of other new series coming to NBC this fall.
The mtn. – MountainWest Sports Network, a collaboration between CSTV Networks, Inc. and Comcast, will launch to showcase the Mountain West Conference athletics. The network will premiere on Comcast systems in Utah, Colorado and New Mexico with some expanded basic service in Salt Lake City and digital cable service in Denver and Albuquerque. These markets have nine of the MWC members some of which include the Air Force Academy, Brigham Young University, Colorado State University, and University of New Mexico.
At exactly 12:01a on July 23, Telemundo will swap its broadcast to a full-power signal in the Phoenix market, the country’s ninth largest Hispanic market. The new over-the-air signal on Channel 39 will expand Telemundo’s ability to cover 100% of the Hispanic cable homes in the market. In addition, the station’s call letters will switch from KDRX to KTAZ. The station will also be available on Channel 20 via Cox Cable.
Dallas-based Parker Broadcasting, Inc. will purchase KXJB, the CBS affiliate covering the Valley City/Fargo area from Spirit Television, Spirit’s only broadcast property. Parker owns one other station – KFQX in Grand Junction, CO. The sale is pending FCC approval.
Discovery Communications has gathered its health-related media assets including Discovery Health Channel, FitTV, discoveryhealth.com, as well as its Continuing Medical Education business under one umbrella called Discovery Health Media Enterprises. In addition, Discovery Communications will launch a new stand-alone VOD service, Discovery Health On-Call, in October. The fully integrated multi-platform health care media business will be a centralized location for viewers to find expert advice, research and more information via television, online and mobile.
And if you happen to live in Cambodia and today is your 50th birthday, Happy Birthday!
Two additions to the cast of CBS’ Close to Home – Jon Seda and Cress Williams, both as detectives. Previously announced was the addition of David James Elliott to the cast when it returns for its second season this fall.
Elsewhere on Friday nights on CBS, Ghost Whisperer has signed Camryn Manheim as a regular, in the role of close friend to Jennifer Love Hewitt’s character. No word yet if Manheim’s character is also clairvoyant.
The Sci Fi Channel‘s 8-hour miniseries The Lost Room starring Peter Krause as a detective who finds a key to not just a motel room, but another portal to alternative universes, has added Roger Bart to the cast. Bart plays the bad guy. The Lost Room is from Lionsgate Television.
George Clooney is getting back into television – via a new production company he has formed with Grant Heslov, called Smoke House. The company will be based at Warner Bros. This marks the conclusion of Clooney’s Section 8 production partnership with Steven Soderbergh, which will officially shutter on August 1. Smoke House will look to produce film and TV projects, and has a first-look deal with Warner Bros. and Warner Bros. Television.
Robert Adelman has been promoted to VP/Affiliate Sales, Central Region at Fox Cable Networks. In taking this new position, Susan will soon leave her VP/General Manager duties at WAWS-FOX and WTEV-CBS, the Clear Channel owned duopoly in Jacksonville.
