Good morning. It’s Thursday, July 17, 2008, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Chorion, the intellectual property company, is launching Chorion Brand Partners, a new division that will set up third-party marketing and promotional partnerships to further support the company’s brands.  Vickie Holtom, Chorion’s Partnership Manager, will head Chorion Brand Partners.  And with that, the first pact completed by the new endeavor is a two-year deal to make Paddington Bear the face of British Airways kid’s travel program.  Beginning this October, the airline will hand out Paddington Bear branded travel activity packs to passengers K3-5 on flights in and out of the UK.

MTV Networks Wallonia has received the go ahead from the Conseil Superieur de l’Audiovisuel to become an authorized broadcaster in the French-speaking Belgium.  The authorization covers both Nickelodeon and MTV through 2017 with an option to renew the license at that time.  For the past couple of years, both networks have been airing in the country but the authorities are now requiring them to air content created for Belgian viewers as well as donate cash or production facility time to the French-speaking Belgian audiovisual community in accordance with local laws.


Sony Pictures Animation has set the release date for its first 3D digital movie Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs for January 15, 2010, according to The Hollywood Reporter.  The movie is based on the kid’s book, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, by wife/husband author/illustrator team of Judi and Ron Barrett.

Lots and lots of folks have been waiting for this piece of news … The Broadway musical Wicked will be made into a movie, according to Variety.  Universal will release the movie with Marc Platt (Wanted) signed on to produce the movie adaptation of the musical featuring music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and a book by Winnie Holzman.  The show is based on author Gregory Maguire’s book Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, which in turn is based on L. Frank Baum’s book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.  Platt, David Stone and Universal are producers of the Broadway show, and Universal is also a co-financer of the show.


Disney Channel will introduce a new character named Flicker to its preschool series Handy Manny next spring 2009.  Voiced by country singer/songwriter/actress Grey DeLisle, Flicker is a Spanish-speaking curious young flashlight that is just learning to speak English.  Disney Channel US airs Handy Manny weekdays (9a) and weekends (10a) during the Playhouse Disney block.

Nickelodeon debuts Nick News with Linda Ellerbee: Torchlight on Tibet: Politics, the Olympics, and You on Sunday, July 20 at 9p.  The episode focuses on when politics becomes an active participant in the 2008 Olympics in China, in this case protests against the Chinese government concerning Tibet.  The will explore where and how Tibetan kids live and their hopes to return to Tibet one day, as well as featuring a discussion with kids about the mixing of politics and the Olympics and freedom of speech.

Bender Media Services inks a broadcast deal with Jetix Latin America for the pay TV and basic subscription TV rights to Marvel’s animated series Wolverine & the X-Men.  Jetix will bow the series this winter in Latin America.

Casting Note: If you think you, or someone you know has Spidey sense … oh and a great rock singing voice, then this is the call they’ve been waiting for.  Casting for several roles for the new Broadway musical Spider-Man, directed by Julie Taymor and featuring music and lyrics by Bono and The Edge, will take place in NYC on July 28 (10a-5p) at The Knitting Factory, 74 Leonard Street.  Here is who they are looking for:  Peter Parker (male, 16-20s); Mary Jane (female 16-20s); Principal woman (female 25-35) a world music type, “think Sinead O’Connor with a Middle Eastern/Bulgarian/Greek twist,” all accents and ethnicities welcome for this role.  If you plan to attend you should prepare 16 bars of a pop/rock song that shows your singing range, bring sheet music and a photo/resume (if you have one).


Hayden Panettiere returns for her second ad campaign for the Iconix Brand Group’s Candie’s.  The Candie’s 2008 back-to-school campaign features Panettiere and her first single, Wake Up Call (Hollywood Records), in the music video for that song.  The ad, which will debut on MTV later this summer, was styled by Candie’s apparel, footwear and accessories, all of which are available at Kohl’s Department stores and  The print campaign will be featured in the September issues of a range of magazines.  You can to take a listen to Wake Up Call at and .  The single will then be available on iTunes from August 5.  Finally, Panettiere will be part of the brands holiday campaign as well.

Web 2.0 learning platform for kids and parents Kidsthing has signed a deal to offer a collection of classic kid’s songs and music videos from the Wee Sing collection created by Authors Pam Beall and Susan Nipp.
