Cynopsis: Kids!
07/14/11

Good morning. It’s Thursday, July 14, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Guess what?  Warner Bros.Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows  Part 2 is breaking records and it has yet to even open here in the US (or most places around the world)!  A shocker, I know, hope you were sitting down.  So here it is, advance ticket sales of the final Harry Potter feature film in the US have reached $32+ million, and that is a new pre-opening sales record.  Lots of midnight and first-day showings of the movie have already sold out.  HP and the Deathly Hallows  Part 2 opens this Friday, July 15 on 11,000+ screens at 4,375 locations, also records for the Harry Potter movie series, with 3,800+ locations opening the movie at midnight on Thursday night.  In another record making move, Deathly Hallows  Part 2 will be released on 274 Imax screens nationwide.  Additionally, the movie, the first of the Potter pictures to be released in 3D, will be shown in 3D at a record 3,000+ locations.  The previous 3D release record holder was Transformers: Dark of the Moon at 2,789 locations, per Box Office Mojo.  For some lucky moviegoers, special commemorative Harry Potter 3D glasses will be given to fans at select 3D midnight showings of the movie.

Gary Kleinman, former Disney Studios VP/New Media Technology, launches FirstRun.tv ( www.firstrun.tv ), a new online and mobile TV network that will offer free original programming via ten different specialized channels including those focusing on kids & family, animation, comedy, sports, action, drama, talk, and instruction.  The programming content, produced specifically for mobile and online audiences, will come primarily from indie producers and creatives that collaborate via FirstRun.tv’s new sister site, tvPRODigies.com ( www.tvprodigies.com ), a free networking site that is focused on independent production.  FirstRun.tv will also produce original series via its production arms, StoryArc New Media and HybridSports.tv.  Additionally, FirstRun.tv plans to share revenue from advertising, product placement, and merchandising with content producers.  Independent producers and content creators can submit scripts, shows and ideas at www.FirstRun.tv/newshows.htm .  FirstRun.tv is owned and operated by Innovation Organization, which Kleinman founded last year to develop entertainment and software for new media platforms.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Production has begun in South London on Postcode, a new kid/tween-targeted three-part urban drama.  Written by playwright Tony Merchant (Holding On, The Mark of Cain, Garrow’s Law), his first drama for kids, Postcode is produced by Zodiak Kids’ The Foundation and will air later this year on CBBC (UK).  Set in a contemporary British neighborhood in transition, with a mix of kids from wealthy families along with those who have moved there from places such as Somalia, Poland, and Pakistan seeking asylum and a better life for their families, the series follows the ups and downs of the daily lives of the diverse characters that live in the same postcode (aka zip code).  Though they are from different backgrounds and their families are facing a range of different issues (from deportation to maintaining their current lifestyle) and appear to have little in common, there are things like football and music that help bring them together and help them learn to get along together.  Postcode stars newcomers Roger Nsengiyumva, Manpreet Bambra, Robert Eades and Sebastian Nanena and features Yusra Warsama (Stolen), Amanda Abbington (Case Histories) and Shaun Dooley (South Riding, Five Days).

Disney XD gives the go ahead on Lab Rats, a new live-action comedy that is set to begin production in Hollywood this September and premiere on the channel in 2012.  Lab Rats revolves around a teenager Leo, who inadvertently discovers three teen super humans (bionic powers and all) living in the basement of the house he shares with his mom and inventor stepdad.  Leo’s new pals want to experience what life is like for a ‘normal’ teen and so they convince him to take them to high school with him where they must keep their true identities and super powers under wraps.  They also help Leo build his self-confidence.  Created by Chris Peterson and Bryan Moore (That ’70s Show), who will serve as executive producers along with Mark Brazill (That ’70s Show, 3rd Rock from the Sun), Lab Rats is a production of It’s A Laugh Productions and designed to be a companion series for Disney XD’s Kickin It.  Lab Rats stars Tyrel Jackson Williams (Everybody Hates Chris), Billy Unger (You Again), Spencer Boldman (I’m in the Band), Kelli Berglund (Hip Hop Harry), and Hal Sparks (E!’s Talk Soup).

MORE KIDS STUFF

Dinosaur Big City, a new Jim Henson Company one-hour TV movie based on the series Dinosaur Train, will premiere August 22 on PBS Kids (check local listings).  The debut of Dinosaur Big City also marks the launch of season two of Dinosaur Train, which is designed to foster scientific thinking and other skills by teaching kid viewers about natural science, history and paleontology.  The new Dinosaur Train season will also feature Big Dinosaur Week and a special based on the song Dinosaurs A to Z.  Finally Paramount Home Entertainment will release the Dinosaur Big City TV movie on DVD on August 23 in the US and Canada.  In addition to the movie, the DVD will include four bonus episodes of Dinosaur Train, and interactive games, coloring pages, a dinosaur reference guide, as well as information for parents.

BBC Worldwide Channels names new local hosts for CBeebies in Australia.  Beginning this month down under, Robbie Harding and Duncan Fellows will host the channel’s new Big Fun Time (3p-7p) weekday after school programming block, which features comedy, game and educational program content, in humorous interstitial wrap-around segments.  Harding and Fellows join CBeebies in Australia’s primary host Tara Colegrave.  Big Fun Time features CBeebies programs including ZingZillas, Numberjacks, I Can Cook, Charlie and Lola, Gigglebiz and Penelope K, by the way.

Angelina Ballerina gets talk show icon Larry King and executive producer Nigel Lythgoe (So You Think You Can Dance and American Idol, founder  Dizzy Feet Foundation) dancing and healthy in a new Angelina Ballerina Stars of Tomorrow public service announcement (PSA).  The PSA, which features Angelina donning Larry King’s infamous suspenders and glasses interviewing King and Lythgoe, focuses on the health benefits of dance and choosing a healthy lifestyle.  Produced by HIT Entertainment, the Dizzy Feet Foundation, which was founded by Lythgoe, director/producer Adam Shankman, Carrie Ann Inaba (Dancing with the Stars judge) and actors Katie Holmes, among others, the PSA is part of the overall Dance 4 Your Life! ( www.dance4yourlife.org ) national health campaign that was launched by the Larry King Cardiac Foundation ( www.lkcf.org ) and the Dizzy Feet Foundation ( www.dizzyfeetfoundation.org ).  The PSA will be featured in an online campaign and social media campaign debuting this month, which will include kid-targeted websites and the AngelinaBallerina.com ( www.angelinaballerina.com).

More broadcast deals for Big Time Rush, the live-action music-themed comedy TV series from Nickelodeon and Sony Music.  Sony Music also continues to rollout the release of the first Big Time Rush album, BTR, which debuts this week in the UK. Viacom International Media Networks newly completed TV sales include:

  • In Europe, RTE (Ireland) acquires season 1 of Big Time Rush, while Mediaset (Italy) and NRK (Norway) both sign on for seasons 1 and 2 of the series.  Additionally, ORF (Austria) also picks up season one of Big Time Rush. Meanwhile Four (New Zealand) has also picked up the series.
  • In Latin America, Big Time Rush has been acquired across terrestrial and satellite broadcasters with Teletica (Costa Rica), Antena Latina (Dominican Republic), Teleamazonas (Ecuador) and Monte Carlo TV (Uruguay) taking season one of the series.  Also picking up Big Time Rush are Megavision (Chile), Unitel (Bolivia), TV Hondurena (Honduras), Venevision (Venezuela) and Televisa (Mexico).

MARKETING/LICENSING

Entertainment One (eOne) furthers production and licensing plans for the preschool animated series Ben and Holly’s Little Kingdom.  eOne has commissioned Astley Baker Davies, creators of Peppa Pig, for 52×11 new episodes of Ben and Holly’s Little Kingdom that are slated to debut in 2012 and 2013.  With 34 UK licensees on board for the property, new product launches for AW11 include stationery, greetings, role-play toys, electronic learning toys, confectionery, annuals, hair accessories, jewelry, lighting, melamine, lunch ware, bags, umbrellas, belts, hats, scarves, gloves and footwear. eOne is seeking to licensing partners for part work publishing, toiletries, furniture, fast moving consumer goods (FMCG), gaming, posters, stickers and promotions for product launch in 2012.  eOne plans to launch a dedicated Ben and Holly’s Little Kingdom website and social media channels in September 2011.  The series will also be supported by Nick Jr on-air and online activities this October 2011, and advertorials and advertising in Practical Parenting Magazine between September and December 2011.  2012 will see eOne introduce celebration cakes, amusement rides and wall decor based on the property.  Meanwhile Milkshake (Channel 5) will host an on-air competition and a special DVD title, The Elf Games, tied to the Olympics will be released.
