CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis

07/13/06

Good Morning. It’s Thursday, July 13, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.

The independent entertainment studio Lionsgate has purchased television distributor Debmar-Mercury LLC. Principals Mort Marcus and Ira Bernstein will continue to manage the company as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Lionsgate. Debmar-Mercury owns the distribution rights to Comedy Central’s South Park, Lionsgate’s drama The Dead Zone, Sci-Fi Channel’s Farscape series, various other shows in addition to two movie packages from Revolution Studios and one from Lionsgate. Debmar-Mercury just completed a test of Tyler Perry’s comedy series House of Payne in several major markets and this transaction will give Lionsgate an extended relationship with Perry in multiple platforms.

* MORE GOOD STUFF *

Comedy Central has ordered a third season of the weekly show Mind of Mencia which will premiere in first quarter 2007 with 16 episodes. The show is executive produced and created by Carlos Mencia and Robert Morton. The show, based on Mencia’s point of view of the world on such topics as race, immigration, war and patriotism, finished second in the ratings for the network behind South Park and was #1 in its time period (Wednesdays at 1030-11p) among A18-49 as well as all key male demos.

FX has ordered up a 4th season of Rescue Me, with an order for 13 new episodes, set to launch in 2nd qtr 2007.

A handful of announcements from HBO at the TCA event in Pasadena:

  • The network is switching around its primetime schedule in the fall, moving its Saturday Night Movie to Sunday nights at 8p.  The Wire will remain on Sundays at 10p, tho it can be caught also on HBO On Demand six days prior (thus sidestepping the male angst of choosing between The Wire and NFL’s Sunday Night Football).
  • The Sopranos debut of its final season has been pushed back from early January to March as a result of Gandolfini’s knee surgery.
  • Big Love is expected to return for a second season in June 2007.
  • Rome‘s 10-episode second season will return in January, tho this will likely be its last season given the costs of production and the enormity of the project.
  • Also returning in January will be Season #2 of Extras with 6 new episodes.
  • And two shows currently in development look like they’ll go forward:  vampire drama True Blood from Six Feet Under creator Alan Ball; and from David Milch, John from Cincinnati about the surfing scene on Hawaii. Look for these dramas in 4th qtr 2007.
  • HBO will make full 30-minutes episodes of two if its hit series – Sex and the City and Curb Your Enthusiasm – available on Cingular Wireless cellphones, as well as short-form original content from the series Entourage.  The 30m offerings will be shown in shorter “chapters”.

Just about 7-1/2 weeks before its inaugural launch, MyNetworkTV has reached its goal of penetrating at least 90% of the U.S. before its debut on September 5 by adding seven new affiliates to its list: WBFS/Miami, WTCN-CA/West Palm Beach, WUPL/New Orleans, KTVD/Denver, WSYX-DT/Columbus, WHP-DT/Harrisburg and WAWS-DT/Jacksonville. The network’s U.S. clearance equals more than 91% of the country, or 158 markets, including 48 of the top 50 markets and 94 of the top 100. More affiliates and the remaining two of the top 50 are expected to be added this summer.

Style Her Famous, debuting on the Style Network September 4, is a new weekly half-hour series that takes a hum-drum young woman and transforms her into a cover girl. Hosted by America’s Next Top Model judge Jay Manuel, the show will incorporate tips and ideas on how the young woman can develop her own style inspired by her favorite celebrity. The show was developed by the Style Network and E! Studios.

The Style Network “teases” us with the launch of another new show this October called Split Ends about two hair styling divas who swap shops. Each week one stylist comes from a swanky big city salon and the other from shampoo-and-set shop in Small Town, USA. By switching places, both stylists surprise their clients and co-workers with their own set of airs and techniques. The unscripted, eight-part series was developed by the Style Network with 44 Blue Productions.

Next January, E! Networks will debut Starveillance, a new 30-minute claymation series that pokes fun at celebrity pop culture events. From Eric Fogel, this show features reenactments of real and imagined tho possible events such as Ashton and Demi’s first date, and Ashlee Simpson’s appearance on SNL. The short segments will also be shown on The Vine at E! Online.

BET is adding punch to its fall season lineup with four new shows revolving around big personalities.

  • Next Level: Vince Young will debut on October 4 as a 6-part reality series chronicling former Texas quarterback Vince Young’s journey from the collegiate to the pro ranks.
  • Beef: The Series, also debuting October 4, explores the conflicts that have provided juicy celebrity controversy news.
  • Debuting on November 29, American Gangster chronicles America’s most powerful Black gangsters as seen through the eyes of the criminals and their victims.
  • Committed: The Christies will debut in October as a new reality show on BET ‘J’.  The show is based on the life of NBA star Doug Christie and his wife Jackie.

Syndicated court series Judge Maria Lopez set to launch this fall from Sony Pictures Television, has been cleared to date on 210 local stations, or 100% of the US. The half-hour daily strip will launch on September 11 and is hosted by Judge Maria Lopez, the first female Hispanic judge appointed to the Massachusetts Superior Court. Production begins August 1 in New York City.

To promote its new horror series, Nightmares & Dreamscapes: From the Stories of Stephen King, TNT will partner with Veoh Networks to create a dedicated Veoh channel allowing viewers to access content beyond the TV series. The Nightmares & Dreamscapes channel will have actor and director interviews and behind-the-scenes footage as well as other movies in the horror genre from TNT’s library. The limited series began last evening on TNT and will air each Wednesday at 9p.

Note to SelfBravo launched Project Runway last evening (which was great!), but in the future, change the channel during the commercial break right before the designers’ runway show.  Last night Bravo invited viewers to participate in an instant poll – “which of these three designers do you think should go home?”, telling us who the bottom three were even before we saw their completed designs! Gee, that’s just not cricket.  If the network keeps doing that, just make sure you jump to another channel for that part.

*PRODUCTION / DEVELOPMENT / CASTING *

Courtney Hansen will be the new host of Racin’ for a Livin’ the NASCAR competition show that features the speedways and twelve rookie drivers vying to be the lone winner from JVI Productions LLC.

20th Century Fox has signed a 3-year development deal with Steve Levitan and Christopher Lloyd to write and develop new projects, either together in a partnership, or separately. Levitan is the creator of Just Shoot Me, and Lloyd was the showrunner on Frasier.

* EXECUTIVE MOVES *

Gary Brockman has been upped to VP/Network Marketing and Operations at Turner Network Sales. Based in Atlanta and reporting to Heather Baldino, SVP/Network Marketing and Operations, Gary will head strategic marketing in addition to managing TNS affiliate marketing services. He will also work with TBS, Inc. Business Development group to create marketing initiatives that support Turner content across various platforms including broadband, VOD, wireless and interactive television.

The Disney-ABC Television Group has elevated Peter DiCecco to SVP/Business and Legal Affairs, Music. This new position will have Peter manage the television music legal policy and acquisition and licensing deals for ABC Television Network, ABC Family, SOAPnet, Disney Channel, Touchstone Television, Buena Vista Television and ABC-owned television stations.
