Good morning. It’s Thursday, July 13, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.
Lionsgate has acquired TV distributor Debmar-Mercury LLC. Mort Marcus and Ira Bernstein will remain as the heads of the company, which will continue to operate under the Debmar-Mercury banner as a wholly-owned subsidiary. Debmar-Mercury holds the distribution rights to Comedy Central’s animated series South Park, Lionsgate’s show The Dead Zone, Sci-Fi Channel’s Farscape, among other TV programs, and feature film packages from Revolution Studios and Lionsgate. The terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Obopay, a developer/creator of mobile payment systems, has entered into a deal with Amp’d Mobile, a youth-centric mobile entertainment company, to offer a new mobile payment service, Obopay-Amp’d. The Obopay-Amp’d mobile commerce service, will let Amp’d Mobile subscribers receive, send and spend money, through an application downloaded onto their handset, as they please. Mobile commerce services are already popular in Asia and Europe.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
World Leaders Entertainment, the newly re-named animation production company f/k/a Noodlesoup Productions, hangs out its recently repainted shingle with the new flash animated series SuperNormal, a co-production with Granada Television’s Granada Kids. SuperNormal follows Eric Normal, a kid who attends Superhero Junior High School and yet has not a single super power and his group of friends who while they may be underachievers in the super power department are still unique kids. Commissioned by CITV, World Leaders will head-up production on SuperNormal and handle its distribution in the US and Canada, with Granada covering the rest of the world. SuperNormal was created and co-financed by Granada Kids and redeveloped by World Leaders.
MORE KIDS STUFF
Nickelodeon will celebrate the 10th anniversary of its preschool series Blue’s Clues with a new primetime movie, unseen episodes, behind-the scenes featurette, and mobile and VOD content:
- Meet Blue’s Baby Brother, a 1hr primetime movie will premiere Sunday, August 6 at 8p, on Nickelodeon
- A behind-the-scenes look at the series with Behind the Clues: 10 Years with Blue (12 min), produced by VH1’s Behind the Music team, and airing Thursday, July 27, 8:30p. The same doc will be available on the Nick Jr Video broadband service at Nickjr.com as of July 31, and available on Comcast’s VOD service as of August 1st.
- Two previously un-aired episodes of Blue’s Clues, featuring Steve, on August 1 at 11 & 11:30a
- Starting this month, the first season of Blue’s Clues is available on iTunes
- Throughout July and August, Blue’s Biggest Moments, a series of short segments and songs will be available via various wireless carriers.
- Beginning August 7, Meet Blue’s Baby Brother will be available on VOD services on Comcast, Charter, Cablevision, Verizon FiOS and Cox and on Nick Jr. Video.
- Nickelodeon Home Entertainment’s DVD title Blue’s Biggest Stores, will be released on August 1 by Paramount Home Entertainment.
- Nick Records/Sony BMG will release the CD Blue’s Biggest Hits – Blue’s Clues 10th Anniversary on August 8.
Sci-Fi Channel will premiere the new original live action film Stan Lee’s LightSpeed, from POW! Entertainment on July 26, at 9p. Created by Stan Lee, the movie follows the adventures of the new modern day superhero, LightSpeed (aka Daniel Beight), an agent with super powers. LightSpeed stars Jason Connery as Daniel/LightSpeed, Daniel Goddard, Nicole Eggert and Lee Majors. Produced by FWE Picture Company, Jeff Franklin, and Elie Cohen, the movie is directed by Don E. FauntLeRoy and written by Steve Latshaw and John Gray.
G4 will feature live coverage from this year’s Comic-Con International (aka Comic-Con), the annual comic book, sci-fi, movies, celebrities, toys, and games convention for fans, being held in San Diego, July 20-23.
- G4’s coverage of the happening will include a 2-hr special broadcast of its series Attack of the Show live from the convention floor on Friday, July 21 at 8p, as well as two more 1-hr specials of Attack of the Show are scheduled for July 23rd and 24th at 7p.
- Additionally, the world premiere of the new 30-min series Happy Tree Friends will be held at Comic-Con, hosted by G4 and the series’ production company Mondo Media. This series launches on G4 this fall.
MTV China and China’s Hurray! Holding Co., Ltd., a wireless distributor of music and music related mobile services, have entered into a new wireless content partnership. Under the new pact, Hurray will offer interactive wireless value added services to MTV China’s audience.
EXECUTIVE MOVES
Daniel Barnathan has been upped to President, 4Kids Ad Sales, a unit of 4Kids Entertainment. Barnathan, who will continue to report to Chairman/CEO Alfred Kahn, had been 4Kids’ EVP/Sales, Marketing and Promotions. In his expanded role Barnathan will have oversight of 4Kids Ad Sales, which sells ads for 4Kids TV on Fox, as well as the company’s websites and home entertainment products. He will also help develop the 4Kids TV lineup and manage research and affiliate clearance related issues. Previously, Barnathan, who joined 4Kids five years ago, held senior sales and marketing posts at CBS and ABC. Congrats Dan.
Natalie Farsi has been named to the new position of SVP/Content and M-Commerce, Mobizzo, an arm of Fox Mobile Entertainment. Farsi will oversee content and m-commerce for direct-to-consumer mobile entertainment service, Mobizzo. Additionally, she will be responsible for growing Mobizzo’s content offering via new deals and partnerships, as well as content production, development and distribution. Farsi will report to Lucy Hood, President/Fox Mobile Entertainment. Farsi was most recently VP/Media, m-Qube. Previously, she introduced the industry’s first cross-carrier mobile web storefront for Warner Music Group.
Bruce Long has been appointed President, National Lampoon, Inc. He had been serving as COO in a consulting capacity. Long will continue to be responsible for all aspects of production, distribution and network operations. He will also work in tandem with CEO, Daniel Laikin to oversee operations and execution across all National Lampoon media and entertainment units (films, College, TogaTV, and Humor Network) and put new strategic plans in place to grow distribution across additional media. Previously Long served as EVP/Strategic Planning and Business Development, Technicolor Creative Services, CEO/Ionic Worldwide Studios and founded Heroes Title Design and Encore Visual Effects Company.
Scholastic Education has appointed Eduardo Aparicio as Managing Director/English Language Learning (ELL). He will report to Jason Moss, VP/Curriculum Solutions. Aparicio head up the ongoing efforts to develop, publish and market reading programs for English language learners. He will also be responsible for growing Scholastic Zip Zoom English, interactive software that features instructional readers to improve kid’s language/literacy development. Prior to this, Aparicio was Executive Editor/ELL-Bilingual, Harcourt Achieve and Supervising Editor/ELL-Bilingual, Rigby Education and was President, Aparicio & Associates, Inc.
Greg Bauman has joined Left Behind Games Inc. as Marketing Manager/Associate Producer. Initially Bauman will focus his energies on supporting the release of Left Behind: Eternal Forces, a video game based on the book series Left Behind. He will also be responsible for establishing new partners in the international video game market. He has previously worked for Interplay, Take-Two Interactive and Encore Software.
