Good morning. It’s Thursday, July 12, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing. And a quick reminder – Cynopsis is on vacation all next week, no editions, no emails, no phone calls from us. Can you imagine? But we’ll be back on the 23rd, just as if this little break never happened.
Poof! Warner Bros.‘ movie Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (HP5) has opened and is already setting records, a shocker I know. Records set so far: box office, numbers of theaters and pre-release online ticket sales. HP5 took in $12 million in screenings, which started at the stroke of midnight on Wednesday in 2,311 theaters, shaking Lord of the Rings: Return of the King from its throne as the prior Wednesday movie opening record holder with $8 million in 2003. As Wednesday progressed the movie had opened in a total of 4,285 movie houses. HP5 was equally bewitching internationally where the movie took in $13.7 million across Australia, France, Hong Kong, Korea, New Zealand, Malaysia and the Philippines, says the Hollywood Reporter. Order of the Phoenix opens this week in 126 Imax theaters worldwide, converted from 2D to 3D, the largest Imax movie open ever, and the company is reporting some are adding additional shows to accommodate the hordes. The movie is slated to open in another 17 Imax theaters in the next few weeks.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Zac ‘High School Musical’ Efron will star in a remake of the movie Footloose that is currently being developed as an all out musical by Paramount, according to Variety. Kenny Ortega, who has directed Efron in both High School Musical Disney Channel movies, will helm and choreograph the picture. Assuming the deal is completed, Efron will play Ren McCormack, the character played by Kevin Bacon in the original 1984 movie, which was directed by herb Ross. Efron stars in New Line’s movie remake of Hairspray that opens Friday, July 20, 2007, as well as in High School Musical 2 that is set to bow on Disney Channel this August 17 at 8p.
