Good morning. It’s Thursday, July 11, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
A major upset at UFC 162 helped propel FUEL TV’s Postfight show to the top of the rankings as the highest-rated program in all of broadcast and ad-supported cable for the 1-2a time period among M18-49 coverage area rating (0.67). The show tied as the highest-rated and was the second most-watched UFC Postfight show in FUEL TV network history, averaging a 0.42 household score, according to Nielsen, with 214,000 total viewers. Meanwhile, Saturday’s UFC PPV Prelims on FX delivered 1,363,000 viewers, up 41% from the 6/15 event.
Super Bowl champion and six-time Pro Bowl center Jeff Saturday is now part of Team ESPN, where he has joined the company as an NFL analyst. He will appear on NFL Live and SportsCenter and contribute to other ESPN platforms, beginning July 17.
Major League Soccer announced that the league’s 2014 All-Star Game is coming to Portland, where it will be played at JELD-WEN Field. The city’s franchise has sold out every MLS league match to date at the venue since their league debut in 2011, currently a string of 42 consecutive sellouts. The opponent for next summer’s game will be announced at a later date.
TNT wraps up its six-race NASCAR Sprint Cup Summer Series schedule this weekend with the New Hampshire 300 on Sunday, July 14, at noon. Coverage begins with the Countdown to Green presented by Kelley Blue Book pre-race show at 11a. Adam Alexander will call the race and host the pre-race show with analysts Kyle Petty, Wally Dallenbach and Larry McReynolds. Additionally, during the pre-race coverage, TNT will televise a special feature with Matt Kenseth and his wife Katie in their hometown to discuss Matt’s decision late last season to leave Roush Racing after 14 years together, as well as his success since joining Joe Gibbs Racing.
ESPN is boosting its coverage of NBA Summer League in Las Vegas this year with a full week of on-site SportsCenter segments and reports spanning July 12-18. ESPN NBA Insider Chris Broussard will provide on-site reports while Sage Steele will host SportsCenter coverage in Las Vegas with ESPN NBA analysts P.J. Carlesimo and Tom Penn, starting on Monday, July 15.
CBS Sports offers third- and final-round coverage of the John Deere Classic this weekend from 3-6p on Saturday and Sunday. CBS Sports’ announce team of Bill Macatee and Ian Baker-Finch will be in the 18th tower, with Peter Oosterhuis on the 17th hole, and David Feherty on the 16th hole to call the action.
Boxeo Telemundo wraps up the summer season at 11:35p on Friday with a bout between Charlie “The Beast” Serrano against Mexico’s Aalan “The Bomber” Martinez with the WBO Latin Featherweight Title on the line. Rene Giraldo, Jessi Losada and Karim Mendiburu will be calling the action beginning and will also be interacting with fans on social media throughout the fight.
FOX Sports South unveiled its new lineup of announcers for the 2013 ACC football schedule, with Wes Durham handling play-by-play duties. Durham will be joined by Brian Stann, former top contender in the UFC with Jenn Hildreth on the sidelines for her third season of ACC football and her 12th covering college football on FOX Sports South.
ESPN Radio announced details of its coverage as the national radio home for the 2013 MLB All-Star Game on Tuesday, July 16, at 8p with ESPN Radio’s Sunday Night Baseball team of Jon Sciambi and analyst Chris Singleton calling the action with on-site studio host Marc Kestecher and reporters Peter Pascarelli and Tim Kurkjian. The All-Star game will also be available on ESPN Deportes Radio with Jose Francisco Rivera, Renato Bermudez and Eduardo Ortega providing commentary.

Doritos and WWE are forming a team this summer to offer fans the chance to win experiences leading up to WWE’s biggest pay-per-view event of the summer, SummerSlam, on Sunday, Aug. 18 in Los Angeles. In addition to being the presenting sponsor of SummerSlam 2013, the Doritos brand will also reward Doritos Jacked fans via a national promotion through Dollar General that gives consumers the chance to win a SummerSlam viewing party. The Pac-12 is continuing to go global. Commissioner Larry Scott announced three summer tours to China for Pac-12 student-athletes and coaches as part of its long-term Globalization Initiative. Tours will include the Arizona State men’s basketball team and the California women’s basketball team visiting China to compete against university and professional teams and participate in cultural exchange and goodwill activities next month. The league partnered with Chinese sports marketing company Hupu Sports Media to help arrange and publicize the games. In August, the Pac-12 will also send a delegation of current and former Pac-12 men’s basketball coaches Oregon State head coach Craig Robinson, former University of Oregon coach Ernie Kent, and Cal’s associate head coach Travis DeCuire – to lead coaching clinics for more than 150 coaches from all over the country.
Eldora Speedway officials and Marcus Lemonis, chairman and CEO of Camping World and star of CNBC Prime’s The Profit, announced that 1-800 CarCash will serve as title sponsor of the inaugural NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race July 24 at Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio. The CarCash Mudsummer Classic presented by CNBC Prime’s The Profit will run under the lights on Wednesday, July 24.
espnW launched its first brand promo, dubbed Girls Like Us, during the premiere of the Nine for IX film Pat XO. The 30-second spot, produced in collaboration with creative agency 77 Ventures and directed by filmmaker Raama Mosley, celebrates the “triumph, passion and dedication of all sportswomen” by showcasing female athletes of all ages from Chicago, Los Angeles and New York with well-known shots of Serena Williams, Abby Wambach and Alex Morgan celebrating victories.
Major League Baseball and the New York Mets are commemorating the Midsummer Classic via a series of projects designed to have a positive impact on the community. Efforts include: renovation projects in Queens for youth baseball and softball fields, a veterans home and a local Boys & Girls Club; a Brownsville, Brooklyn public school courtyard that will be used for educational, recreational and environmental programs; a benefit concert in Central Park; a charity run in Prospect Park; and donations to the Wheelchair Sports Federation and Coney Island Hospital.

The Patriot League locked in a multi-year extension of its contract with CBS Interactive for the production of its official website, www.patriotleague.org. The CBSSports.com College Network’s suite of digital product offerings will allow Patriot League fans to engage with their favorite school’s content, follow games and news, and shop for the latest team merchandise. The CBSSports.com College Network will handle the development, management and monetization of the Patriot League’s official athletic website as well as the management of its official online e-commerce store. The agreement also includes auction, photo, DVD, memorabilia and advertising rights.
