CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY: Last.fm announced the official launch of its Artist Royalty Program allowing unsigned bands to register their uploaded music on the site, so they can get paid royalties when their tracks are listened to by Last.fm users. Since offering the option in January over 450,000 independently-produced tracks have been registered on the site. However, a group of independent labels called Merlin, positioned as a “fifth major” representing some 12,000 smaller companies, is already complaining the program is unclear about its terms and fails to address compensation for past use.  Full edition: CYN DIGITAL.

CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORYSony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions group has picked up the US distribution rights to the new CG animated family movie Planet 51.  The HandMade Films International’s presentation of the Ilion Animation Studios film, Planet 51 will feature the voices of Dwayne Johnson (we used to call him The Rock), Jessica Biel, Justin Long, Gary Oldman and john Cleese. Featuring a screenplay by Joe Stillman (Shrek, Shrek 2), and directed by Jorge Blanco and co-directors Marcos Martinez and Javier Abad, Planet 51 is a switcher00 on the alien invasion scheme, as this time an earth astronaut is the invading party when he lands on Planet 51 only to find that aliens (yes, the little green type) are living there in a 1950s American style white picket-fenced world.  Sony’s TriStar Pictures will release the movie on November 20, 2009. Full edition: CYN KIDS.

CYNOPSIS INTERNATIONAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  Less than one month before the Olympics begin, global broadcasters have finally been given the go ahead by the Chinese government to broadcast live via satellite from other Beijing and co-host city locations besides the sports arena used for the Olympics.  Limited access will be given Tiananmen Square from 6-10a and 9-11p for rights holders only with television crews only allowed to pre-record content in the Square.
